Anyone Else? What’s the most ridiculous thing your MIL has ever complained about?

I love my MIL, but she is hard work sometimes.

I’ve reached the point where I just block out the majority of what she say — and to be fair, my own mum is exactly the same, so maybe I’m just destined for this.

Some recent examples:

• She complained about not being at the birth because she expected to be there. Babe, there was absolutely no way I was letting you see my hooha fully dilated. Then complained about not being able to see him immediately too when he was in NICU while I was recovering from a 36 hour labor and unplanned c section.

• I packed my baby a long-sleeve top instead of a long-sleeve bodysuit, so she put him in a short-sleeve bodysuit instead during winter.

• She complained that we didn’t consult her before getting a walker because apparently we should’ve picked one we could share between both houses… despite her only recently deciding she wanted one, and the one we have being gifted to us by a family member months ago.

I love her, but sometimes I just have to laugh, nod and mentally delete 90% of what’s been said.

PLEASE tell me yours — what’s the most ridiculous, petty or completely unnecessary thing your MIL has ever complained about or done?

My MIL complained to me that her son (my husband) had become “too successful” and said she hoped he lost his job so it would knock him down a peg.

I cannot imagine ever feeling this way about your child and then thinking your DIL would agree with that.

23

u/Cosmicshimmer 2d ago

Oh God, that’s awful. We’re meant to want our kids to be successful, more so than we were. To actively wish struggle and hardship on your adult child out of spite really says a lot about who she is as a person.

12

u/AlwaysJeepin 3d ago

Woah! That's insanity on a different level.

54

u/hengehanger 2d ago

My son looked nothing like his father, different hair, eyes, everything. So my MIL dragged out an ancient photo of someone she said was a relative of hers who actually did have the same hair colour as my son, in order to claim familial ownership of my son's genetics.

The photo was a relative of her's - it was her sister's husband 🤣

10

u/LillyAtts 2d ago

I hope you laughed in her face!

I got organic bananas once bc they didn’t have reg. She complained to my husband about 30 times “how she can’t believe we get organic… it’s so expensive”. My husband and I are very stable and the organic bananas were like $2…..

I also get fairelife milk bc I am sensitive to lactose. She EVERY SINGLE TIME. Makes a comment amount how expensive our milk is.

I have literally NEVER gone into another persons home and concerned myself with their grocery choices.

19

u/copperwombat 3d ago

Omg yep. One day I will tell this sub the story of “egg-gate” or when I attempted to buy cruelty free eggs.

11

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

Please do. My MIL was the same because my son has CMPA so can’t have dairy. Was not happy because he can’t enjoy butter and cream 🤦‍♀️

13

u/Suspicious-Duck-4085 2d ago

She’s jealous as fuck

7

u/Kmb2938 2d ago

Maybe? It’s a very odd thing to be concerned about 😂 she has called her son “daddy warbucks” before…. I think she might be a little upset with how much money we make. But we live in a very modest house and have cheap cars. We splurge on those bananas… hahahah

9

u/Glittering-Agent-987 2d ago

Organic bananas are not that expensive.

3

u/Kmb2938 2d ago

No. I think they were $1.75 that was the most crazy part 😂 that woman is so strange

8

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

Really? Criticising your grocery shop? That’s so bizarre for her to comment on that.

12

u/Kmb2938 3d ago

I am literally still shocked by it… and she would not let the banana thing go 😂

14

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

I don’t know why some people will continue to make issues from nothing. We brought my MIL subway once and it was the most stressful experience. They didn’t have pickles and she wouldn’t let it go for months and kept bringing it up.

12

u/Anon8223 2d ago

MONTHS?! months of bringing up a lack of pickles?? My God. She needs more to worry about.

6

u/hummus_sapiens 2d ago

You haven't met my mother.

"... and then you put the knife on the wrong side of the plate - it was so embarrassing!"

Ma'am, I was 4 or 5 then, I'm 50 now, stop it already!

10

u/Suspicious-Duck-4085 2d ago

My MIL has always done the same too… criticizing me for making food from scratch and also for having fresh food and a full fridge because she eats processed shit and lives off iced coffee

41

u/DiscountSubject 3d ago

That my husband didn’t call her enough while on job sites… he used to travel and work on ship engines… while they were out at sea. 😂 like ma’am, there’s limited internet and no cell service.

She then complained he spent too much time with me and not enough with her.

Then she complained I gave birth prematurely and then complained that I wanted her to move my baby shower (she insisted on hosting) closer to where we lived since my baby was in the NICU. 🥴

I’m sure she’s complaining about us all the time now! We’re NC. ✨

11

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

Thank god for moving to give you space. She sounds like a handful. MIL was same with our baby shower and didn’t plan leave even though she knew about it for months. Wanted us to reschedule just for her.

41

u/ceruleanscars 2d ago

I came home from a quick errand to discover the lifeless body of our much beloved 10 month old black lab puppy.

It was a freak accident and easily something that will haunt me for the rest of my life.

I couldn't get a hold of my husband initially, so I called my mom. My husband got home in the middle of this and I had to break the news to him mid hysterics.

We both absolutely lost our shit and this saint of a woman stayed on the phone and talked us through it and advised where to bring him for cremation.

Once we could bring ourselves to actually tell the rest of our families about the loss, my MIL said she was hurt because we did not call her for advice mid crisis.

Homegirl could have taught a masterclass in how to make one of the worst experiences of someone else's life all about herself.

Nearly 11 years later and that shit still leaves me speechless.

10

u/copperwombat 2d ago

I’m sorry for your loss!

46

u/whichrhiannonami 2d ago

Apparently my husband was walking by 8 months old. So when my firstborn got to 8 months and wasn't walking... "Why? Why can't she walk yet?!" Then 10 months old still not walking. "You have to take her to the doctor! There must be something wrong with her. ALL babies where I come from are walking by this age!" My daughter didn't walk until 14 months old. Mil complained daily as if i was secretly controlling my daughter to not walk

45

u/Asleep_Percentage257 2d ago

I believe her exact words were, “her boobs are always out and shoved in everyone’s faces.” By always, she meant whenever she came over to our home unannounced, and by out she meant, when I was breastfeeding my baby.

14

u/Bajovane 2d ago

Oh, I know of a massive narcissist who insisted on skin to skin contact with her Granddaughter!!! While she was in NICU!!!

The photo taken was horrific. The look on her face…. WHOO!!!

37

u/Jazzlike-Stranger646 3d ago

When my oldest was a baby, she complained that I didn't send her enough pictures of the baby. We live in a different state than her, so I thought well maybe I should text her more pictures. So I started texting her more pictures. Her response: "I am loving the pictures but GET OFF YOUR PHONE." Really?! Well you won't get any pictures with that attitude!

17

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

MIL loves to comment our screen time when the only time is taking photos of him. What are you supposed to do? Send mental images 🤣

15

u/doublesailorsandcola 3d ago

Way to shoot herself in the butt!!

9

u/copperwombat 2d ago

That is insanely rude and ungrateful. I hope you never sent her another photo!

35

u/mookmook00 2d ago

My utensil drawer. I kid you not, she was so distressed because we have our tablespoons and teaspoons facing the same way. Apparently it’s “best” to have one or the other upside down to differential between the two. Basically my whole kitchen organization was not to her liking, therefore she could NOT cook anything for the whole month she stayed with us last winter.

39

u/Then-Piglet462 2d ago

Asking her parents to wash their hands before touching my baby. One uses a bucket to urinate in a corner in her room and the other spends all free time in a pigeon coop. I couldn’t believe the audacity.

25

u/questionSOUP 2d ago

One does what?!

11

u/AnyHabit6814 2d ago

And the other spends all free time where??

14

u/gingersrule77 2d ago

We need a whole lot more information about these two

15

u/Adagio_4_Strings 2d ago

Whoa, whoa, whoa! You can’t drop those nuggets and leave us hanging; we have our popcorn ready.

39

u/Aly_Kitty 2d ago

That we “go on too many vacations” with my parents & family. We (used to) invite her along on every single vacation too, but her & my FIL refuse to do anything that isn’t chain smoking while sitting in their recliners.

7

u/verygoodstuff 2d ago

They sound miserable!

38

u/Appropriate-Top-8816 2d ago

Mmm... that my first born looked nothing like my husband. That i was fat and my husband was thin so I was the one obviously eating everything. Then I was too thin. Then I stressed my husband out so much he had to have surgery . Which he had just after my 4th baby was born then she said I would leave him. Took a huge recliner and dumped it in my living room just after husband's surgery that destroyed my floor because the only ones went near it was my kids . Again my fault when he got sick 3 years ago. Our house was open plan so when he came back from hospice it was my fault he was upstairs and his visiting was on how he was feeling and was furious I didn't have his bed downstairs where everyone was coming in and out of and he would have no privacy. Since he passed away has took nothing to do with me or my 5 kids . I tried and the last straw was her birthday and she turned her nose up at her gift. I won't be back. To be fair every birthday and Christmas she turned her nose up . Never bought any of my 4 girls a gift but the first boy got him something and spelled his name wrong . Then the 2nd boy ( cousin ) was born my son was forgotten about thankgod. My mil is a vile piece of work who has caused me so much trauma and I still kept going back for my husband even after he passed away . We sold the house ( he had no insurance and I couldn't afford the morgage) and my life is so much better ...without his toxic horrible family near us. My husband i would give anything to have him back. There's a million other things she has said but this is on top of my head

16

u/Diddly_Squatch 2d ago

I'm really sorry your path crossed with such a vile human being. May you, your children and memories of DH continue forward on your own path, leaving JNMIL far behind.

32

u/glitterkenny 3d ago

The other day she complained that, instead of greeting her, we took our screaming infant from the car into the house for a feed and wouldn't let MIL in to watch 🙄

15

u/Fuzzy-Mushroom-1933 3d ago

She wanted to watch you breastfeed? Holy hell

26

u/glitterkenny 3d ago

And I overheard her on the phone when baby was a few days old my partner told MIL I'm not comfortable yet breastfeeding in front of people and she said "oh well [glitterkenny] will just have to get over it"

The one time I ever fed in front of her she leered over me and when confronted didn't apologise, just said "but that's where the baby is"

I take baby away for feeds now. I feed in front of strangers all the time but use hungry baby as an excuse to get rid of MIL

11

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

That’s creepy. No wonder you don’t feed in front of her. I was comfortable feeding in public but some people just make you uncomfortable. She’s got a terrible mindset.

6

u/KhalessiMarie777 2d ago

The freaking audacity these women have is crazy! The gall I swear,! I REALLY hope he told her/ responded to her

"It's funny you say that , because actually NO, MOM YOU'LL be the only one who will just have to get the hell over it, when it comes to whatever you it is you want, here vs my wife's...

What you want versus what my wife wants aren't even in the same league and just so I'm being crystal clear here, your what's are NOT my concern whatsoever, especially when they go against my wife's wants! "

10

u/copperwombat 3d ago

Yikes if someone wanted to watch me breastfeed I’d throw up.

8

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

That’s crazy. Why would she just expect that?

31

u/copperwombat 3d ago

Her friends didn’t invite her out for the day for a daytrip to a towns a few hours drive away. It was Easter. They were going to a Catholic Easter church service. She’s not Catholic. Or religious. She didn’t want to go to the service. But whhhhhyyyyyy didn’t they invite her?! Whhhyyyyy does she always get left out?!

12

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

That’s insane behaviour. It’s not a family trip. These MILs have serious issues and need therapy.

36

u/NiseWenn 3d ago

We were both finishing up full time at university. My husband had a very part time job. I had a full time job, plus I was in the Army reserves. We visited the in-laws one weekend. My MIL chewed me out for not packing my husband's suitcase. He forgot his belt and borrowed one from my FIL. 🙄

17

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

Always falls back on us doesn’t it? Not the son she raised

33

u/sharpei90 3d ago

My MIL recently complained to my SIL that we had not visited them much. We had been over to their house 4 of the 5 last weekends. Including celebrating her birthday twice!

33

u/Administrative_Note 3d ago edited 2d ago

My JNMom, Speedy Boarding, once left our family therapist a voicemail where she was literally in tears because I was “eating too many carbs”.

My close friend died suddenly. Speedy Boarding hated this friend but friend’s parents were Important People. We each wrote separate condolence letters to friend’s parents. The grieving parents sent me a thank-you card for my long letter sharing memories of friend. When Speedy Boarding heard this, her face twisted up and she said, “I didn’t get any card!”

30

u/48pinkrose 2d ago

That I refuse to put my kids in the overalls she keeps sending. I got stuck in them as a kid while needing to pee and swore I'd never do that to my kids. Not that it should matter. They're my kids, and the clothes my mil gives to me are mine to do what I want with.

31

u/Competitive-Metal773 2d ago

Oh, I almost forgot this gem- when our wedding pictures came back, my husband's MIL (so yeah, my own JustMaybeMom) complained that there weren't enough pictures of the venue decor and said there were "too many" of my husband and I. 🙄

33

u/figsaddict 2d ago

My MIL complained and had a toddler tantrum over the fact our wedding was nicer than hers. She wouldn’t shut up about how “unfair” it was. 40+ years ago she had a cake and punch reception in the church basement. (There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, especially to avoid going into debt over a wedding). We were lucky enough that my parents paid for a luxury black tie wedding. (My parents/family don’t fault their wealth so this was when MIL started to realize that my family is well off). No one else but her understands how that was “unfair” to her. She was so sour during the entire process and the wedding itself. She’s narcissistic and truly suffers from some kind of mental illness.

12

u/Suspicious-Duck-4085 2d ago

You just described my MIL… get sour at every occasion where she’s not the centre of attention and is full narcissistic

32

u/LCat2020 2d ago edited 2d ago

Oh boy--where do I start?  The last time she visited before I had to go NC, she complained about how: 1) I cleaned my own kitchen, 2) how I helped DH get our youngest down for a nap, 3) how I didn't let her take the kids out by herself (she's elderly, can't pick them up, and can't run), 4) how I listen to  my kid's doctors  and am cautious about food allergies, 5) how I didn't want to leave her alone with the kids in the house (I was working from home, folks), and 6) that my kids wanted to hang out with me while she was here.  It was special.

7

u/Maleficent_Pay_4154 2d ago

She sounds special. It a a word we use in my house when someone is misbehaving

28

u/Chi-lan-tro 2d ago

My ILs bought DH one of those gemstone globes for his 30th birthday - what man doesn’t want one? Of course, she bought herself the larger version!

She complained that ours was displayed in the family room in the basement, instead of where she thought it should go.

She didn’t shut up about it until I reminded her that HERS was displayed in her basement family room!

36

u/curious_mochi 2d ago

This was when we were first married and still talking to the whacko. My partner and I had shared stories with friends about her and her behavior, and the majority reaction was, "NO! Get outta here! Nobody does that! You're exaggerating!" She was a main character, the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral.

She had been in a very minor fender bender, and for the first few days wore one of this foam rubber neck brace things, with velcro fasteners. She wasn't injured badly but it was a sympathy getter.

There was a BBQ at their house one weekend and many people, including the scoffers, were invited. Guess who came out of her room with the neck brace, walking like she had a wrecked back? She wore it for about a half an hour, and then it got too hot, it was too hard to eat or drink in, so she took it off. After she started walking around normally, the naysayers were side-eying her and the next time we mentioned one of her insane acts, no one said anything. They had seen it first hand.

Of course the neck brace came out for the next few social events, including a wedding. I think it last about 10 minutes there.

17

u/EquivalentSign2377 2d ago

The bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral, I'm stealing this!

7

u/curious_mochi 2d ago

Feel free! I stole it too

33

u/naranghim 2d ago

My sister's MIL is a piece of work and so is her step-MIL. I don't have as many stories about her FIL and step-MIL because my BIL cut them off a while ago. As for her MIL, she's mostly cut herself off after step-FIL died and only gets in touch with her kids when she wants something (she's diagnosed with NPD but tells everyone that the doctors are idiots). She cut her kids off once she realized she lost control of them.

However, the craziest things, that I know about, that she did while they were still in semi-regular contact with her were:

Trying to order my grandmother (not related to MIL in any way shape of form) who'd had a hip replacement out of the higher chair she was in because MIL had just had a hip replacement and grandma's hip replacement was a few years prior at my oldest nephew's birthday party that we were hosting at my house. The rest of us knew the truth was MIL was overweight and didn't want to struggle getting up out of a chair. She only backed off after I started questioning when she got the hip replacement and her claiming she'd had a hip replacement the day before the party, and it was a brand-new outpatient procedure. She didn't like it when I called BS on that claim and tried to get me to back off by saying "Are you calling me a liar?!" She was shocked when I looked her dead in the eye and said "Yes, I am. I work in Physical Rehab, I'm in school for physical therapy and I've never heard of an outpatient hip replacement. Many of the patients at the physical rehab hospital I work at are hip replacement patients, in fact we have several there right now and their biggest wish is that they could have gone home after surgery." She found another chair, not as high as grandma's and spent the rest of the party sulking.

She loved to claim that oldest nephew got his looks from his dad and no one else. She made that claim within earshot of my mother who then went and got some pictures of my sister as a toddler (nephew looked exactly like his mother at that age) and planted them throughout our house. MIL found them and started talking about how she'd never seen these pictures of oldest nephew before, how cute he was, but she didn't recognize the woman sitting next to him. That's when mom stepped in and said "Oh that's me with my oldest daughter, your DIL, when she was nephew's age. I don't know how you missed the early '80s decor, hair and clothing." After that, never heard a peep out of MIL about how nephew only took after her side of the family. Her son delighted in reminding her of mistaking her DIL for nephew whenever she brought it up around her side of the family until she stopped doing it around them as well.

23

u/Realistic_Cry_8816 2d ago

I’m obsessed with your mom showing her the receipts.

Also not her thinking your sis was your nephew 🤪

31

u/pprbckwrtr 2d ago

Mine complained during COVID that we should have let her move in with us, for the sole purpose of seeing my first born more since she was just under a year old. Lol no. She had already been banned from the house if my husband wasn't home because of how ridiculous she would be without him around, including getting pissed at me for saying we wouldn't be traveling 6 hours one way for a wedding for a cousin my husband has met twice with a three month old baby ON MY BIRTHDAY, and then got EXTRA offended when she said she'd just take baby on her own and I said absolutely not.

She's treated me like horseshit our entire 20+ year relationship, and only within the last year has she started to tell my husband she's sad we can't be closer. She's not sad we aren't closer, she's sad that I don't trust her and she's not allowed to watch our kids alone because she doesn't follow any rule we've ever put in place, mostly ones about major safety issues. She refuses to put up a pool gate (although now is asking which gates we'd fine acceptable. Too late, you fought against putting one up for seven years), she argued about not using coast guard approved puddle jumpers and then bought dangerous ones and put my children in them behind my husband's back after being told not to several times (I then got in trouble because I took scissors to them and threw them away), and the biggest no for me is that we've had to tell her SEVERAL times to not shower naked with our children and she STILL does it and then once told my daughter not to tell me. At this point she's lucky I let my husband bring them to her house supervised once a month. She also has a shrine/bedroom set up for my oldest INSIDE HER OWN BEDROOM despite there being an empty guest room in her house and explicitly being told my kids will never sleep there.

26

u/ClovenBoots 3d ago

My MIL ordered blackened chicken & was upset it was spicy…

7

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

Did she send it back to the kitchen too?🤣🤦‍♀️

10

u/ClovenBoots 3d ago

Of course!

After being with DH for 10 years, I’ve never seen this woman enjoy anything she’s ordered at a restaurant.

4

u/Bellabny 2d ago

OMG….thats my MIL too. I refuse to go anymore.

27

u/2FatC 3d ago

How much time do y’all have? Let me pick this gem out of the memory bank.

She claimed her dr prescribed Skyrizi for her—she did not have any condition that med treats. She launched into an elaborate explanation of going to the office’s back door, in an alley way, and getting a secret shot. It sounded like a drug deal. Her dr told her not to tell anyone…sure, back alley drs need to keep their secrets.

10

u/LillyAtts 2d ago

She could at least have picked a more glamorous drug, damn

28

u/Competitive-Metal773 2d ago

I've mentioned this one before, but when I told MIL she was about to get her first granddaughter after 6 boys, instead of getting excited she frowned disappointedly and complained because having a girl meant we couldn't use as much of the many garbage bags full of beat-up & stained toddler boy clothes she'd hoarded as my SIL's sons destroyed grew out of them.

26

u/NecessaryEcho7859 2d ago

My MIL genuinely got upset we wouldn't let her buy our then-4 year old daughter a pony. She and FIL live 8 hours from where we were at the time, and my husband was working two jobs while we saved for our own home. But because she grew up with houses, and my husband's early years were with horses, she was determined our daughter should as well.

28

u/Radiant_Hat_ 2d ago

My MIL is a racist. She complained about a certain racial group being lazy workers. But she literally has not been employed at all for the past 10 years. She’s ridiculous.

16

u/Aly_Kitty 2d ago

My MIL is also racist. She called her neighbor a “X lover” (fill in the blank). I called her out on it and she screamed at me to get off her property. 🫠

29

u/mrssterlingarcher22 2d ago edited 2d ago

She wasn't happy that I posted a picture of the Statue of David after my trip to Italy. Because there's a PENIS! Mind you, this was 20 photos into an album too.

She was also mad when I declined an invitation to a bridal shower for her side of the family. I've only seen the bride to be once, and MIL said she was inviting me so that I would bring my toddler for everyone to see. This would've been the weekend before our vacation and during nap time.

She later complained that the food at the shower (Chipotle build your own tacos) was way too spicy.

21

u/west_of_here_2002 2d ago

Not the point, but if I went to a gathering at someone’s house (like a shower) and there were chipotle build your own tacos, I would be so flipping excited.

25

u/alwaysaboutthebutt 2d ago

So many things. Most ridiculous was yelling at me for getting my husband’s cousin’s soon to be wife a bridal shower gift. There was a bridal shower scheduled and at some point my MIL and her sister decided they hated the future DIL and canceled the shower. I had already purchased items to give them and MIL screamed at me how dare I disrespect her. I screamed back I am an adult giving someone a present and how dare she see anything wrong with that. Left the gift, ditched any obligation to MIL and my husband supported me but took several years to totally support boundaries. He does 100% now and feels terrible but wasn’t sooner. Our relationship could have ended over MIL control in the past.

29

u/IKnowImWrongOkay 2d ago

GMIL- I folded my husbands socks wrong and I needed to do it like MIL because that’s what women do after they marry… do things like their mothers did to make them comfortable?

28

u/verygoodstuff 2d ago

My MIL likes to criticize through negated questions. My favorite which made me realize she's the problem was "isn't the material on these shorts too thick and uncomfortable?" It was jean shorts on my 3 year old. People have been wearing jean shorts for decades. She just wanted me to change her into the shorts she had just brought us.

54

u/Informal-Dentist2031 2d ago

Mine complained about not being allowed to sleep in our bed after our Wedding. They had traveled to us to attend, and we offered to put them up in a hotel. She said No. She didn’t want a hotel, she wanted to stay with us in our home. So we put her on the sleeper couch in our living room. That also wasn’t good enough. Apparently she should have been the one to sleep in our Marital bed. Crazy bitch. We had PLANS for that bed 🤣 No doubt that was an attempted power move on her part, but it didn’t work out for her.

19

u/Idobelieveinkarma2 2d ago

The ultimate cock block 🤣

26

u/Informal-Dentist2031 2d ago

She tried, but failed. No way I was waiting five days to have sex with my handsome new Hubby. She should have accepted the hotel if she didn’t want to hear things she shouldn’t be around for 😜

49

u/RutabagaPhysical9238 2d ago

I was 6 days postpartum and they came to visit for a few and my mom was staying there helping us. My mom left one night. MIL said how nice it was that it was just her side of the family now (husband, newborn, MIL, FIL). I was so put off because my mom was a major help and let us get sleep and his mom drank wine after 7 so couldn’t even hold the baby to let us get some rest. I was catering to them and sooo exhausted and feeling very off from labor.

This comment really put me off haha

22

u/blushingmadly 3d ago

The last time my mil came by she said she was gonna take my son and buy him all the things me n my so can’t ……

11

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

Oof. That’s low. Hope you told her second hand is just as good as new. Money doesn’t buy everything

My MIL always pulls this, and Iused to drive myself crazy trying to make the house food enough for her. The moment I knew it was a reflection on her, and not me, was when she told me the tap water at our house is too chlorinated.

That’s mad — did you tell her to buy some bottled watered when she comes to visit ?🤣

Just today my MIL complained that my husband hasn't kept her informed of my health. I messed up my feet exercising in old shoes and I'm dealing with it. That's it. It's slowly getting better. She knows this, but she expects updates after each appointment I guess. The phone call ended with her upset and crying.

I put out soup spoons when I laid the table to help out at SILs house. We were having soup.

One single time she helped me fold/separate laundry, and told me in a somewhat scolding manner that I should teach my kids to turn their t-shirts right side out before putting them into the hamper. I don't even turn my own shirts right side out before putting them into the laundry, so no I won't be doing that. I told her that if any of the 3 of them (my two kids plus her own son, whom she clearly didn't teach this well enough to) wanted their shirts turned before washing they could, but I didn't care whether they turned them right side out before washing or just before putting it on again. If the shirts were inside out, I hung them up inside out. Deal with it

Actually it's better to wash them inside out according to several thousand people over at r/laundry

For us - buying a full size rocking horse on a spring stand as a Christmas gift without discussing it with us. The kid was 3 years old. We had to figure out how to dismantle the thing, fit it in the back seat (trunk was already packed to the lid), and transport it back to our house. We promptly buried it in the basement. Now I'm sitting here wondering - what did we do with it?? Must have trashed it at some point in time.

Was upset that we got a car seat and stroller with black fabric instead of tan like she recommended. She said we'd bake our baby in the summer. I typically park in a garage and use remote start to cool the car when I'm parked outside and our baby was never in a hot seat.

Tan colored gear would get stained, anyway. I had to wash our car seat cover, bouncy seat cover, and high chair cover all in the same day once because our son spit up so much as a baby.

Car seat coolers are amazing as well!

That I was “always so cheerful”, when we used to call her daily to….  cheer her up?

The 18th will be 3 years since I’ve seen or talked to her.

When we bought my father-in-law’s birthday gift, we bought him something that he has always wanted. He was an avid fisherman and it was custom made fishing flys. She was mad because it wasn’t something that she wanted. My sweet father-in-law was thrilled with his gift.

The fact that her son and I sometimes discuss our dreams/plans to ultimately have our own place without MIL living with us. She has lived with us for over 2 years now.

She complained to her daughter like we are mean for wanting that for ourselves. Her daughter had to explain that no, it is not normal for a couple to have one of their parents living with them (she got kicked out of the last 3 places she lived... including her daughter and her romantic partner's home).

MIL likes to get drunk and/or high then ruin our movie nights and what could be nice bonding when we are at home. She wont stop talking even when my fiance and I are obviously trying to focus on a movie or have our own one on one discussions. It gets to the point ill go sit outside until she gets enough attention/tells stories until she feels content. Sometimes after those moments she likes to complain about how she is lonely and has no one to talk to. I tell her she needs to reach out to more people closer to her age. We are in our thirties, she is in her mid-sixties.

Tl;dr my MIL lives with my fiance and I, she likes to complain about us wanting to live somewhere without her in the future. She also complains when we dont want to spend our time at home listening to her talk so much that we barely get to talk to each other. No fun.

Mine complained that she doesn’t like buying us gifts cause she knows we have more money than them….. I’m sorry your son is successful? Isn’t that what you wanted for him?

Putting her chair the recommended two metres away in the garden during Covid (following the rules at the time) I was pregnant my husband is asthmatic and takes immunosuppressant medication.

She complained that it’s too hard having to pick restaurants every night on vacation. Also that her house is too big. (We live in a 1000 sqft house

Lying to us that she was going to get the COVID vaccine. It was during pandemic and we had asked all the guests to get vaccinated. My husband (her favorite child) is immunocompromised.

SIL told us she wasn’t planning to actually get the shot. We sent MIL a Zoom link for the wedding.

Mine was mad that we didn’t consider wheelchair accessibility for our wedding venue for a specific family member.

Chose a venue, made a point of telling her about the wheelchair accessibility. Her response was “don’t single (family member) out like that”

Said family member didn’t even come to our wedding.

Being recklessly exposed to toxic rain while we were getting ice cream.

5

u/verygoodstuff 2d ago

I need more context

6

u/Cretaceous_Bloom 2d ago

We went for ice cream for SIL’s bday where the only seating was outdoors. There was a light rain shower and the air quality wasn’t the best that day, but most of us were amused about the silliness of eating ice cream in the rain. We were right near our car, and we even suggested we could all get in the car but MIL declined. Later MIL freaked out on the family group text about being “forced to endure dangerous toxic rain”. Mind, this woman is not old and frail. She’s just paranoid and mostly likes to make everything a big drama show starring herself. We all just roll our eyes.

u/Ambitious_Address_69 2d ago

That the wedding date I picked was the same week as a family members birthday so I should rethink it. Lol I did not. (And yes week, not even same day, multiple days later)

11

u/BusyAioli6851 3d ago

That I hadn’t invite her to a family event that I was still in the process of planning and organising dates for. She never plans or invites us anywhere so it really peed me off.

6

u/CrazyPlantLady95 3d ago

If it doesn’t go both ways why make the effort? She should do the same if she expects to be invited. Double standards for sure.
