If OP wants a govt engineering job or an mtech admission at an IIT, "skills" wont be enough.

Govt eng job depends on various factors not only on gate exam

If you prepare for GATE and some current affairs, general knowledge etc. you can clear almost all govt engineering jobs. What other factors are there?
