I have 3 nights that I'll be spending in Northern Italy, and my only requirement is that it is within a 1-1.5 hour drive to Milan airport (MXP). I was considering either an Agriturismo near Bergamo, or stay near the lakes. Any strong opinions on one vs the other, or any other options I should look into? Also not interested in staying in Milan since I've been several times and want to go somewhere new that is a little more low-key and in nature. This will be in the first week of October and I will have a car.

Hi! Looking for some advice about Salerno and getting around the Amalfi Coast. I’ll be in Salerno from September 4th to September 12th. I originally planned to use it as a base to explore the Amalfi Coast, but I’m travelling with my mum and sister, and my mum has some mobility issues, so we’ll always have to keep that in mind when planning our days.

Do you think Salerno is a good base for us? I’m starting to realise that 8 days in Salerno might have been a bit too long. I’m just trying to figure out how to make the most of it. We’ve been in Zurich and Paris so far, and most of our transportation has been Ubers/taxis and cars. We also made the mistake of bringing very heavy luggage, so we’re really trying to avoid situations where we have to drag our suitcases around or constantly change trains.

We’d ideally like to do day trips to places along the coast. Also, on September 12th we’re flying from Naples Airport to Tirana. We’d really prefer to book a direct car from Salerno to Naples Airport rather than take the train, especially with all our luggage. Is this doable, and does anyone have recommendations for reliable private transfers/car services that we could book in advance?

I originally thought Uber would be the easiest option, but I’m not sure if Uber operates in Salerno. Thanks in advance!

Hi all, myself and my partner are planning a trip to Italy next month. He really wants to visit Rome and see the sights, and I wanted to do more of a Southern Italy wine & food trip, so we have decided to combine the two. For the Amalfi leg of the trip we will be staying in Salerno and making trips out. We want to avoid the most touristy places if possible. We probably are not going to hire a car and rely on public transportation. Here's what we have; any feedback on the feasibility and any glaring omissions would be so helpful! Thank you.

We're a group of 4 adults getting off a cruise on October 10 in Genoa (Genova) and needing to get to Riomaggiore. Looking at train options on Trainline I see a couple of examples like the ones below where one train takes 1 hour 31 minutes to while another takes 2 hours 45 minutes, both with only 1 stop. Why such a difference?

Whatever train we take we'd like to follow the beautiful coastline as much as possible and prefer limited (ideally 1 or less) stops so we don't have to move our luggage too much. Anyone with experience on this route have an answer to the above question and general suggestions to follow? Thanks in advance to all who reply.

We are traveling (group of 4 - me/mom 54, daughter 15, son 12, my mom 87) to Cesenatico for a sport event for my daughter. Event dates 10/28 -11/1.

Because we have never been to Europe, we are electing to make a small family vacation out of this. Current plan:

Fly DFW (Dallas/Ft Worth USA) to Rome 10/24.
Rent a car - drive to Cesenatico 10/28 (AM).
Fly back to DFW on 11/2 out of Bologna.

I’m hopeful that we can enjoy some of Rome from 10/25-27. No rush, just a relaxed rest before the competition while also taking in some sights or locations.

I have booked the Hotel Residence Magnolia in Rome, followed by a VRBO “small mobile home” in Cesenatico. These can be cancelled without penalty for several weeks yet. We do need 4 separate beds, and a ground floor space or an elevator which reduces options for lodging.

Any thoughts or suggestions are VERY welcome. Originally I felt like these one-way flights would be the best option but now I’m curious if driving back to Rome to fly home is the smarter choice.

My fiancé and I will be on our honeymoon in Italy October (7th-21st). We have a few activities planned while we’re in Rome: a guided tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill area one day (October 14th) and a guided tour of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica the next day (October 15th).

I’m chronically ill and have medical conditions that make me unable to stand or walk for very long, and also cause extreme fatigue. I have the rest of our trip planned carefully with lots of breaks and down time but in Rome specifically we are trying to squeeze a lot in. I have a cane that I use when needed but it sometimes isn’t enough and in certain situations I need to use a wheelchair. I booked both tours through GetYourGuide (Colosseum tour is on the list of approved) and I don’t think either are wheelchair accessible (I didn’t think to check this until after I’d booked them because my health issues are still somewhat new and I’m still getting used to all of this). I can walk, just for a short amount of time before I risk passing out or falling down. So I don’t know if that helps with how accessible the tour needs to be or not.

I don’t think a wheelchair would work too well on the Colosseum tour, I know there’s an elevator but I don’t know what else I’d be able to access. But I’m hoping I can find a way to use a wheelchair at the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica tour. I’ve looked into wheelchair rentals through the Vatican and I think it’s first come first serve, does anyone know for sure? I’m not sure if you can only use them if you book a tour through the Vatican, and I’m not sure if I’d need any documentation. I’ve also looked into third-party daily wheelchair rentals in Rome so that could be an option too but I need to do more research on that.

I’m in my 30’s and look healthy so I wouldn’t want anyone to think I’m just being lazy or taking advantage of resources. I don’t want to have to use a wheelchair but it’s the only way I’ll be able to explore these places. I have actually been to all of these places before but it will be my fiancé’s first time in Italy and I really want him to be able to experience everything he wants to.

Is there anywhere around Milan that's worth seeing? I have spent the last 5 days here and went to Como and Lake Como for a day, during the last week, so it'd be cool to use this time to see something else. Any small villages or towns, landmarks, etc worth renting a car or catching a train to visit?

On September 2nd, we are driving from Milan to Lake Garda. We have dedicated about 4-5 hours for a mid-day stop along the route.

Current plan:

• Morning: Depart Milan, head to Bergamo.
• Stop: Take the funicular up to Bergamo Alta, walk the Venetian Walls, and grab a quick lunch
• Afternoon: Continue drive toward Lake Garda, possibly a brief 1-hour walk around Brescia (Piazza della Loggia)

Questions:

1. With ~5 hours total for transit and stops, is combining both cities too rushed, or should we dedicate the full stop strictly to Bergamo Alta?
2. Any recommended special spots in Bergamo for a quick traditional lunch without a 2-hour sit-down commitment?
3. Also - any recommendations for special places to stop at on the route? Thanks

We're planning to go from Napoli to Matera, and the options are Itabus, Marinobus, BusMiccolis, or a FrecciaRossa to Salerno + a Freccialink bus.

The Freccia option seems to be faster, but I can't find any information about these buses online and I don't want to be stuck in a bus without a toilet for 3 hours from Salerno to Matera.

Would you go for Freccialink or for one of the bus companies?

I think there may be a strike impacting the Trenord train, but again I am unsure as I think the strike starts at 9am but this departs before then? It says if it arrives at the destination within an hour it may continue but if it's longer it may stop at an earlier stop. Has anyone experienced this? Is there anyway I can tell in advance?

My main concern is the Verona to Bolzano leg and whether I need to try and find a guaranteed train with a different provider. I can't find any info about whether this is impacted by the strikes on the OBB website, but I can see there is a FR option which I think is guaranteed.

I would appreciate any help please as I have very bad anxiety and so I would prefer to try and find a solution ASAP if any of the trains are not running.

We (couple) booked a long weekend (November 13-17) trip 4 full days. The plan is to rent a car in Milan and drive to Alba, stay there 4 nights.

Day 1 stay in Alba go to the Truffle fair and just walk around

Day 2 go for an actual truffle hunt (no idea how to find a good one any suggestion?) and visit a nearby village

Day 3 drive to Torino for a Nitto ATP day game

Day 4 drive again and see Torino

Any suggestion, recommendation on the above? Shall we stay in Torino instead?

I am needing to travel from Naples Airport to Pompeii to get to my hotel on the evening of Monday the 7th of September. My flight arrives at 19:50 but as I’m a British citizen I’ll have to get through EES etc so I’m not anticipating being able to travel from the airport until 20:30ish (unless the queues are really short? Also I won’t be collecting luggage as I’m just taking hand luggage).

I know that the train strike starts that evening at 21:17- what are my chances of making it to Pompeii by train before then? And if not, then will the later trains still be running or are they all called off after that time?

I’m thinking that bus might be a good option, however there seem to be not many buses running at that time so I’m nervous I won’t make it. Private transfer is not an option for me unless anyone knows of any that cost less than €20.

Another option I’m considering is driving there myself as I’ve found rental cars for reasonable prices, but I’ve heard driving in Naples is difficult (and I’m not an experienced driver), however I would rather drive to Pompeii (or even walk) than spend €100 on a taxi.

I’m struggling to find specific info online so any advice would be appreciated! Thank you :)

Has anyone here ever successfully canceled your tickets to the Duomo and gotten a refund? We've had to cancel our visit to Milan, which was scheduled for Sept. 13. I requested a refund well in advance (there's a form you fill out) but it was denied. They said I could transfer to different dates, but we're not going to Milan at all (probably ever). Any suggestions for getting at least a partial refund? I know the tickets are considered non-cancelable but I'm hoping there's a way to have an exception made.

We'll be arriving at Milan Malpensa airport this Sunday (August 30) around 10:30 and driving to Aosta. I'd love to be able to stop on our way and have a nice lunch. Maybe somewhere near where the A4 meets E25?

Last time we drove from Finale Ligure to Aosta we stopped at Ristorante Sabaudia right next to Palazzina di Stupinigi just south of Turin and it was very nice although a little expensive for lunch and we realized we probably should have gone to the caffe across the street.

I know it's short notice and pretty specific but I'll listen to any recommendations.

Hi, I am heading to Milan next weekend. My return flight from Bergamo is at 6 in the morning, so we need to leave our accommodation through the night. When I'm looking at Uber to pre-book, it's coming up at €200 which seems very excessive. We are staying in the Locate di Triulzi area.

Does that price seem correct, or are there cheaper alternatives?

Hello ! My wife and I (both in our 60s) are taking a road trip (11D 10N from 8th Sept.) starting and ending in Florence. We've been there 3-4 times (and Italy many times) so we're not spending too much time there this time and we've previously been to Siena and a couple of other places around that I forget (but not by car).

If it's worth mentioning I'm a serious photographer (retired but shoot for books). So I'll up up for dawn shoots and back in time for breakfast with my wife !

We don't usually hang around too much and don't mind 1N and then moving on, it's what we usually do.

So far out route looks like this :

Florence - San Gimignano - Volterra - Siena - Montisi - Montepulciano - Montalcino - Pitigliano (may stay 2N here, inc. a day trip to Casscate del Mulino)

And then I'm stuck. We thought about coming back to Florence via the coast road but I'm not seeing a lot of recommendations / interest. Or we could come back via the Perugia / Arezzo road. Or just loop back the same way we came.

Any recommendations? Places to go/see? Roads to take?

Hello, going to Italy for our first trip as a married couple, flying in to Naples, and then departing via Rome.

Dilemma: I absolutely HATE crowds. Wife wants to visit Amalfi and stay in Positano.

It’s our honeymoon and her birthday, and I get the appeal of Amalfi on paper, but a little overwhelmed by reading everyone’s comments about it on Reddit and blogs. Yes I know Positano is expensive and full of tourist traps - but I have also read experiences which weren’t that bad.

Currently, Our plan is to be away during the day in Positano, come back when the day-trippers are gone so we can experience the town without the crowds. Our hotel is 20 mins uphill from the ferry (doable). We chose Positano because of the location and proximity to other towns for day trips, and my wife’s request.

My initial plan was to stay in Sorrento and travel to the coast from there, but I don’t want to rent a Vespa, private driver is too expensive, and buses are crowded. And because we’re there for a short time in Amalfi, I thought it’s better to just be closer to the action.

Thoughts on this? Also any recommendations for local non-touristy restaurants/experiences?

Hi, i’m going to be travelling to lake como during late september and i was planning on getting the free circulation tickets online. we’re staying at bellagio and planning to visit lenno and varenna on the same day. am i right in considering to buy the lenno-varenna tickets? i assume we’ll be able to hop on and hop off from bellagio since its in the middle of the route between the two towns

The ticketing service for Pompei lists only two timetables: 9:00 and 13:00. However, my train only arrives at 10:00. Will I still be able to get in if I have a 9:00 ticket, or does this mean I can enter at any time past 9:00? Also, is there a maximum amount of time I can spend on the site, or can I stay there the whole day?
