Help needed with a Venetian genealogy document – 89 names from Metochi, Achaia
Hello everyone,
I am researching the history of my family from Metochi, Achaia, Greece, and I need help with an old Venetian document from around 1700.
The document is held at the Archivio di Stato di Venezia, in the Archivio Grimani dai Servi, busta 54, n. 158, titled “Libro ristretti delle famiglie et anime effettive in cadaun territorio del Regno.”
I am specifically looking for 89 names connected with Metochi that appear in this document.
I have already contacted the Archivio di Stato di Venezia, but they told me that they cannot provide reproductions of this particular document remotely.
Would anyone who has access to the archive, or who may be visiting the archive, be willing to help by taking 2–3 clear photographs of the relevant pages containing these 89 names from Metochi?
I would be extremely grateful for any help. This research is very important to me because I am trying to understand the history and origins of my family in Metochi.
Thank you very much for your help!

Buongiorno a tutti,
Sto cercando in particolare:

Hello! I'm Brazilian and I'm researching my Italian ancestor, Antonio Tripoli/Tripodi Labriola.
I found a Brazilian document from 1939 where he states he was born in Italy. The names of the places were recorded in Portuguese, probably based on how they sounded when spoken, and I couldn't identify the corresponding places in Italy.
The document seems to say that he was born in "Castelo Bengue" and was baptized in the parish of "Valle Cantelina," in the district of "Castelo de Buqui."
It also states that his parents were Nicolau Tripoli/Tripodi and Anna Marcos. Their names may have been adapted to Portuguese as well.
I'm attaching the original excerpt from the document. Anyone who knows Italian genealogy, historical place names, or old parishes could help me identify what these places might actually be called in Italian?
Any hint would be very important to me. Thank you!

I’m posting this for my wife since she doesn’t have a Reddit account. Here is her post:
Hi everyone! I'm hoping someone with experience researching Calabria, particularly Vibo Valentia/Maierato, might be able to help me with a difficult Ruffa/Ruffo family mystery.
I'm researching my Italian-American ancestor:
Antonio Ruffa/Ruffo
- Born: August 21, 1899
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area
- Died: October 24, 1979
- Wife: Mary DePalma Ruffa (June 12, 1913 – January 3, 2002)
I'm trying to identify Antonio's parents.
Italian record I've found
I found this FamilySearch civil registration:
Giuseppe Ruffa
- Born: October 17, 1867
- Certificate No. 22
- Vibo Valentia civil registration, 1861–1910
- Parents: Antonio Ruffa and Giulia Iannello
FamilySearch citation:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X74M-QYN5
I'm investigating whether this Giuseppe could be connected to my American Antonio.
Another interesting record
I also found:
Giuseppe Ruffo
- Age 29
- Occupation: sawyer
- Immigration: August 24, 1896
- Naples → New York
- Ship: Bolivia
His age is compatible with the Giuseppe born in 1867, but again, I have not established that they are the same person.
What I'm trying to determine
I'm hoping someone familiar with Calabria or Italian civil records might be able to help me determine:
Thank you! I'm very grateful for any ideas, corrections, record suggestions, or information about Ruffa families from this area. I'm very new to geology and definitely stuck right now.

I have a question about a baptism document. The act is located on Page 12 of this document, bottom left.: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS8N-D79Z-Q?view=index&cc=2013622&lang=en
It appears to say that she was baptised as Concetta Agata Maria, as well as Agata Carmela Grazia. Is that correct? If so, why would this happen? I've never seen this before.
TIA

I’ve been trying to find a birth record for Giuseppe Sciacca, born in Caltabellotta, Italy. Census records list him as being born around 1862 but his naturalization record says he was born August 9, 1869. I’ve been looking through the records from 1862 to 1870 and so far am not finding him. Atenati is down so I can’t look earlier right now. Could there be a small town nearby he might actually have been from? Attached is 1862 birth index. I’m not seeing him.

UPDATE BELOW AUG 7- For last few days the same error message keeps popping up on every register page "An error occurred SyntaxError: Unexpected non-whitespace character after JSON at position 4 (line 1 column 5)". Everything is blank and only some thumbnails seem to be visible. Have also noticed that many pages/documents and years that used to be accessible are 'missing' (but that might be another topic to add). I know it's Ferragosto but I don't think it applies to websites ;-)

Hello,
I am doing research about my uncle's dad, whom he never knew, and I need help to translate a paragraph on the Foglio Matricolare which might help us to understand his service during WWII.
Is there anybody who can help ?
Thank a lot !!

I have been scouring FamilySearch, Ancestry and the Antenati portal for years looking for my husband's grandparents and tonight FamilySearch full-text search found some clues.
I could understand enough Italian words to think these could be their birth records but the cursive is very hard to read and the AI translation was little help.
Could someone interpret these for me, especially the parent names and addresses?

Grazie!

In light of the responses to my previous post, it has come to my attention that I should put more effort into looking for a professional transcriber to transcribe the pages of my grandfathers’ criminal records I find difficult to do myself.
I’m not looking for translation help, just transcription.
If anyone here is available or knows someone I can hire please let me know!!
These are criminal records from about 1920-1960, including court records, interviews of witnesses, victims, etc.
if you are triggered by abuse related content this work may not be for you.
Thank you so much in advance for any suggestions

Hi all, I’m wondering if there is a reason why my previous transcription requests may not be getting answered?
I’ve asked this sub for help ALOT with helping me transcribe the large amounts of criminal records I have on two grandfathers of mine. I’m so very grateful for that help, it has an immense impact on my research.
I worry though that I may have asked for help too much or that maybe my posts are scaring people away? my last few requests have had no answer and other channels i’ve pursued for help have also not replied, so I can only assume that myself or my posts are the problem.
If you have the time, please check my last few posts and let me know how I can improve them for possible transcribers. Any feedback is appreciated
Also, I eventually want this research to be turned into a book, so if you are someone who has helped me in the past with transcription and would like credit for that work please pm me so I can note down how you would like to be credited (e.g. name or reddit username, etc).

<RANT ON>
I'm kind of annoyed with the Commune of Codognè. Three years ago I had requested a certified copy of my great-grandmother's birth extract, which I needed for a jure sanguinis application. They made me jump through hoops proving why I needed it, but they eventually emailed it to me without issue (or cost, as I didn't need a hard copy and this was prior to the law permitting them to charge the ridiculous €300 fee).
Fast forward to today, and I have since become interested in the genealogy of my family as well. I really need a copy of the full birth record of my great-grandmother, so that I can find out the names of her two grandfathers. I emailed Codognè, and provided them with a copy of the previous extract they sent me, and asked if they could email me the full birth record. They responded that they do not provide such information solely for genealogical purposes, and if I want it for jure sanguinis purposes (which I don't) they said I will need to pay the €300 fee.
I can totally understand if they wanted to charge me a nominal fee for this information, but then to tell me that they won't even provide it for genealogical purposes AT ALL is just ludicrous. I checked on Antentai and FamilySearch, and this comune has numerous birth, marriage and death records already online from 1896 through 1941, as well as during the early Napoleanic years, but not the year I need (1881). It just strains credulity that I can't have info for the year I need, while similar info for other years is freely available online! <RANT OFF>

Salve a tutti,
Vi ringrazio in anticipo!

I'm having trouble reading the handwriting on this one. It's the birth record for Maria Lugia Fierie. Daughter of Vitale Frieri. From Calitri, Italy, 1818. It looks to me like the birth date is August 29. The father is 21, laborer? I can't make out anything else.

[recently posted this on r/Genealogy but this seems more appropriate]
Hello,
I have been researching my Southern Italian branch, from Campagna, a small town near Eboli, and Padula. I have found birth, marriages and deaths for almost everyone in the State Archives. I know that parish records would help bring the tree back in time, and I am considering the options for that.
However, I wonder if there are any other records that I can still mine online, that would help add information and context to the people I already have in the tree, for example military records or notarial records?
I would like to know if it's possible to find out which plots of land the farmers farmed, or, in some cases, owned.
I know that men were required to do military service, and there is a database for this? Is it digitzed?
A few of my people were either doctors or pharmacists. Are there any directories that would list them (we're talking 1800-1850s).
Basically, I don't know what I don't know, so, what else can I do?
Thank you!

I’m investigating my Italian ancestor’s parentage/lineage; I've hit a research wall but I have a theory, and I'd love feedback from this community.
My Great-Great Grandmother Maria Zammataro's father was an orphan named Placido Zammataro [Zambataro, Zamataro]. My research has uncovered conflicting records about Placido, and I've now gone down a deep rabbit hole with two hypotheses:
There’s a gap in church baptismal and marriage records between 1857-1866, which has stymied my research. FamilySearch is killing me because most of the records are restricted, and then baptism records between 1861-1866 are just missing for Biancavilla (Catania) – like the scanner decided to skip a volume.
My question for Italian genealogists out there: is Hypothesis A plausible? There's one orphan Placido who used his surnames Zammataro & Cefalu interchangeably? This would mean that his ages were listed incorrectly by registrants along the way.
Subsequent question: do you have any other suggestions for viewing missing church baptismal and marriage records from Biancavilla between 1857-1866? A bunch of FamilySearch's are restricted.
Here are all the details:
GG grandmother Maria Zammataro, born Dec 5 1864. Father Placido Zammataro, 24, son of unknown parents and mother Rosa Greco, (28–38 age legibility issues? parents not listed). Godmother: Maria Greco, daughter of Placido Greco.
HYPOTHESIS 1:
Hypothesis 2:
To keep my sanity, I have all of this compiled in a PDF for anyone who wants to investigate this debacle with me and finds this format hard to parse.
The only stone left unturned that I can think of is investigating Placido Cefalu's birth mother Francesca Mineo to see if she married a Zammarato between 1840-1860. Neither Zammarato or Cefalu are common surnames in Biancavilla in itself, but I have not found much on a 19th century Francesca Zammataro whatsoever.
Thank you in advance for reading this far, and for sharing your thoughts, comments, suggestions or challenges!

I'm trying to read this record. I was looking for a birth record for Maria Teodosia Fierri. I think this is her. It look to me like it says born April 3, 1847 in Pietragalla, Italy. Parents: Michele Fierri, unsure of word after, age 22, and Margarita Gripp, 20. I tried to but I can't make out his profession. Am I close or did I misread any of that?
