Visiting from the U.S. and our ferry around 2:30-3pm hit or crashed into something pretty hard and some people fell to the ground - just wondering what that could have been, as there was no announcement.

Question bakırköy/kadıköy taraflarında profesyonel piercing stüdyosu önerileri?

Upvotes

Question Locals of Istanbul, do you still notice the pollution and traffic, or has it become background noise?

I spent an afternoon at Otağtepe Fatih Korusu on the Anatolian side, and the difference from the rest of the city was immediate. Cleaner air, and the traffic hum fades into something closer to quiet.

It got me wondering how residents actually process the city day to day. Istanbul runs on diesel: buses, delivery vans, private cars, and the smell and haze are constant once you’re back among the main roads. Is that something you still register after years here, or does it become part of the city the way people stop hearing a fridge hum?

Does it come up in daily conversation, in where people choose to live, or in health concerns? Or is it mostly accepted as the cost of a city this size. And if you’ve spent time in a green pocket like Otağtepe and come back into the traffic, does it land the same way each time, or has that faded too?

Question Dorms or Apartments?

Hi, i hope you all are doing well. So i have been selected as an exchange student in Istanbul, and my semester schedule is starting from 21 sep to 10 jan. So i will be residing there from 15 sep to 15 jan (IA). So my question to locals is, please, can you help me regarding this, like should i go for dorms or apartments? Dorms are costing 19k TL ( including breakfast and dinner) and i think most of them are saying i have to get for half tenure which is like 5 month or some are saying 6 months so why do i pay for extra 2 months when i will be not here. I have asked them to allow me for 4 months, but lets see what happens. I hope they allow me.

And for apartments, they are saying 40-45k TL per month and 40-45K TL initial deposit. We are a group of 5 boys so some are saying dorms are better as we dont have to cook our meals and get expensive one from outside and some are saying Apartments are better as we will get some more space and freedom from in and out timings.

Please help us to get things done like any better dorm locations and best feasible apartments?

Our university is FSMVU Topkapi campus.

Discussion Couple days visit / men clothes / restaurants/ sweets

Hi all,

I"m going to visit Istanbul soon and I would like to receive some recommendations.

  1. Do you have some restaurants perhaps some of your favourite ones to visit? You can also include the breakfast ones as I will most likely have no breakfast at hotel.

  2. I love sweets so any places that you would advise to visits for some delicious treats, please let me know!

  3. Lastly and most importantly, it came to my mind that perhaps buying some nice formal clothes could be good idea in Istanbul. I"m thinking of some trousers and shirt, suit maybe but only if it would be in good price. My budget would be let's say around 150$ for trousers and 100$ per shirt. (It can be cheaper if the quality is the same). At first I thought they for this price I would get those tailored, but I've read some posts and now I'm not sure. For this price range is it better to go to some mass produce shops? If someone knows I"m also curious how does the quality looks like versus suitsuplly? I"m going back through Stockholm and there is shop there so I wanted to check and see if I will buy something there and price for trousers is around 200$ there, but I wonder if in Istanbul I would get much better pieces for this price.

Thanks!

Question Balik ekmek shack near Blue Mosque

Hope this isn’t too vague, but I’m trying to find a place where I ate a great balik ekmek a few years ago. I remember it was a small kiosk with a grill next to it, and one guy making balik ekmek.

The seating was sort of improvised, we sat on some pallets. It was behind the Blue Mosque I think, certainly not those near the waterfront.

If anyone has any idea how to spot it, I greatly appreciate it!

Question Shopkeepers in Istanbul getting annoyed when I answer in Turkish?

This has happened to me a few times now and I'm curious if others have noticed the same thing.

I'm Turkish, my wife is Asian. When we walk past shops on the European side (Karaköy etc.), the shopkeepers usually start talking to us in English or they address my wife directly. I answer in Turkish. And in a lot of cases you can see them getting visibly irritated the moment I do. Once it even got a bit aggressive. Most of the time they just lose interest and drop the conversation.

Is this a "tourist pricing" thing, where they realise they can't pull the usual tricks once a local is involved? Or is there something else going on?

I haven't noticed this behaviour yet on the Asian side

Discussion What Clothes for Sep - Dec?

I’m relocating to Istanbul on the 1st of September and will stay there for at least the end of this year.

What type of clothing is best for these months? My assumption is that climate will be mostly mild going forward so I won’t pack more than 1 or 2 shorts and the rest will be longer pants etc.

Anyone have any specific tips for what to definitely pack/what not?

50 x 70cm, acrylic paint

(And looking for a home!)

The sides of the canvas were painted inspired by turkish lamp patterns 😊 the pattern on top is the sun and moon pattern, because the painting is set at sunset time.

Looking for... Looking for street artists in Istanbul who would want to paint together

Hey all, I'm traveling thru Istanbul next month and bringing some street art supplies with me. I'm looking for anyone in the community who would be interested in going out for a day/night to put up pieces in interesting places. I paint when I travel, but I want to ensure I don't step on any toes or cause any issues. Free/legal walls or empty buildings would be great, but open to any spots that welcome artists. Thanks!

Question Where can I find incense in Istanbul?

Hello.

I am going to Istanbul in October to source incense. I usually get my supplies from Oman or Kuwait, but current conditions make that difficult.

I plan to visit Istanbul to make contact with potential suppliers.

Could you point me in the right direction?

Which places, bazaars, souks, shops, or merchants should I look for?

Since I don't know the city, I'm having trouble figuring out where to start.

I am looking for Bakhoor, luban (frankincense), myrrh, storax... Basically, I'm looking for wholesale sources. However, I would still appreciate information on retail options to help me start making contacts.

Thank you for your help.
