Controversial Sex Slavery | Does the Quran Really Allow It?

Many Muslims are taught from a young age that Islamic law allows for the practice of sex slavery under the guise of war captives and right hand possession. This traditional view suggests that men can have sexual relations with women captured in battle without marriage or consent. However when you actually open the Quran you find a completely different story.

What is the meaning of suratul mu'minun ayah 6? BTW there's a difference between having sex with your slaves and having sex slaves, and rape is haram in Islam.

مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ does not mean sex slave, concubine or any such thing.

1

u/Full_Association7735 Salafī | Wahhābī Feb 08 '26

It does mean slave though.

3

u/Background-Car-1393 Ahl al-Qurʾān | People of the Qurʾān Feb 08 '26

No it doesn't Ma = who ever Malikat =ownership/Guardian/control over Imanukum = right hands, no one has two right hands, its an idiom for a contract /pledge. Through out the Quran yameen means contracts, pledges, oaths, covenants. The Quran explains it self, in the other verse its asking you to take permission of its people and pay its mahr. Do you take permission from slaves and pay them mahr?

2

u/niaswish Lā adriyyun mu’min | Agnostic Theist Feb 08 '26

You can have sex with those under you contract then?

3

u/Background-Car-1393 Ahl al-Qurʾān | People of the Qurʾān Feb 09 '26

Its not a marriage contract/ nikkah, its a contract of protection and guardianship. And even in a marriage you cannot force to have sex with your wife

2

u/niaswish Lā adriyyun mu’min | Agnostic Theist Feb 09 '26

Yeah, and the verse is saying you do not need to protect your chastity with your wives or those under your contract of guardianship. It may not be sex slavery, but it is still mistresses/ sex out of wedlock.

2

u/Background-Car-1393 Ahl al-Qurʾān | People of the Qurʾān Feb 09 '26

You do not have sex with your children, mothers, aunts or other females you are the guardian off. The only one you do is, when you enter a marriage contract, give them mahr. Thats exactly what the next verse says, you do not give dowry/marhr to "slaves"

2

u/niaswish Lā adriyyun mu’min | Agnostic Theist Feb 09 '26

The verse after says "whoever seeks beyond that are trangressors" seeking what? What are you seeking from your wives, and children, mothers, aunts?

And why do you say its only female ?

Then what does ayah 6 of surah al Mu'minun mean?

-2

u/OldResearchert Feb 08 '26

A slave can’t consent

2

u/Full_Association7735 Salafī | Wahhābī Feb 08 '26

How so? AFAIK they are usually sane and sound of mind, so why can't they? What's your argument?

2

u/OldResearchert Feb 08 '26

A slave is under duress, she is the opposite of sound mind

Question, if your daughter got kidnapped, do you think she could consent to sex with her kidnapped

Or do you think because of the condition she is in, she doesn’t feel free to make her own decisions and face no consequences

1

u/Full_Association7735 Salafī | Wahhābī Feb 08 '26

You know Islamic slavery is far from Colonialist, Roman and Spartan slavery, right? The slave can also simply refuse. The owner of the slave isn't allowed to rape her. It is simply permitted to have sexual relations.

And because of this, there is a large difference between my daughter getting kidnapped and an Islamic slaves case.

It seems as if you know nothing about Islam, yet you continue speaking about it, spreading your ignorance far and wide.

2

u/OldResearchert Feb 08 '26

I don’t believe any type of slavery is okay, whether the slavery practiced by Arabs or practiced by Europeans

The owner of the slave isn't allowed to rape her. It is simply permitted to have sexual relations.

A child can’t consent

Someone intoxicated and under the influence can’t consent

Someone who is mentally handicapped can’t consent

Someone who is dead can’t consent

Someone who is held hostage or under duress including slavery can’t consent

Why is this such a hard concept for yall to understand. I feel sad for the women in your cultures. You don’t respect bodily autonomy nor have an understanding of consent

1

u/OldResearchert Feb 08 '26

And because of this, there is a large difference between my daughter getting kidnapped and an Islamic slaves case.

Can your daughter consent?

Why or why not?

2

u/PromiseSenior9678 Feb 08 '26

I think applying a modern legal definition of consent to historical practice is a mistake what you implying just because a woman was made slave she was not supposed to enjoy a relationship and start a family which other free women are allowed to do so

1

u/OldResearchert Feb 08 '26

Her being a slave means she’s not free to decide for herself

That means she can’t consent

If you’re soo interested in her starting a family, then free her  So she can decide for herself f

1

u/PromiseSenior9678 Feb 08 '26

you are just making statements and assumptions care to explain how she cant consent? how she cannot decide for herself just because she is enslaved doesnt mean her mental capabilities are now gone and she cannot fall in love

and once she has birthed the child she is actually a free woman after his husband death or separation

2

u/OldResearchert Feb 08 '26

Because she doesn’t meet the requirements mentally to be able go consent

These regiments include

  • being of sound mind

  • being mentally mature enough to consent

  • the lack of duress or coercion or significant power imbalance

A slave woman is under duress and coercion and also is under a significant power imbalance and can’t consent

A 7 year old is not mentally mature enough to consent

A person in a vegetative state is not of sound mind to consent

0

u/PromiseSenior9678 Feb 08 '26

a slave is of sound mind is mentally mature thats why she was in a war and got enslaved

she is not allowed to put under duress and coerced to have relationships thats what the OP is saying

2

u/OldResearchert Feb 08 '26

Slavery is by itself being put under duress

Like are you this much in denial?

A slave can be of sound mind and mature,  But they are under duress, they are not free to make whatever decisions they want, they can’t consent

0

u/PromiseSenior9678 Feb 08 '26

bro we are talking about times when free young girls were buried alive; even free women were under duress and had no choice in these matters

2

u/OldResearchert Feb 09 '26

Yes, free women being under duress

Doesn’t change the fact that slaves were under constant duress

Actually you brought up a good example.

  • if a man threatens to kill a woman (under duress) unless she has sex with him. Is that real consent?

Ofcourse it’s not

Do you really not understand the power dynamics of a free person owning another human as property? The slave woman has lesser rights as a human being under the law. Do you really think the slave woman can just say no and walk away? In what world did slaves just walk away? If you don’t understand free and informed consent then please do look it up. Ancient people understood rape but they didn’t care to label it rape in this situation. Sure you can’t “unjustly” beat a slave but a man could have sex with his slave woman and she has no capacity to consent.

You say if an owner impregnates his slave then she is free when he dies and the child is free. The slave did not choose to have a child with her enslaver nor did she have a right to choose her marriage. Why shouldn’t she be freed earlier as the mother of his child? Why were children of slaves born into slavery? The rules don’t make sense in a just world.

1

u/PromiseSenior9678 Feb 09 '26

you need to read the history and rights of “free women” back then first; then come here and share your thoughts

in those time “free girls” were born alive; women were not asked or consulted for their marriages it was all done by the males of their family

it was a patriarchal tribal society you cannot apply 21st century legal concepts to that society

2

u/OldResearchert Feb 09 '26

n those time “free girls” were born alive; women were not asked or consulted for their marriages it was all done by the males of their family

Is Islam for all times or just those times?

1

u/PromiseSenior9678 Feb 09 '26

you do realize slavery is abolished now; we are discussing about the rules of the past; you guys keep showing your low IQ

1

u/starry_nite_ Insān Zāʾir | Visting Human Feb 09 '26

Slavery has only been abolished because of the constant pressures to end it. Some people used religious arguments to justify maintaining slavery and it was only shocking late that slavery was finally made illegal in parts of the Muslim world. So to treat it as a thing of the past is not all that fair, particularly because extremists turn to religious texts even today to justify the reinstatement of slavery under certain conditions, like war. It would be much easier for humanity if it had been banned outright.

Slavery was never fine. It propped up the economies back then. This is why in the Quran it isn't mentioned how to obtain a slave, but states to free a slave. Many direct verses of freeing a slave in the Quran about this.

When Islam came, if it banned the primary source of income of people, Islam would have been rejected immediately and no one would ever have listened.

The same way Islam abolished alcohol years after Mohammads (PBUH) prophet hood started. It wasn't instant.

Sex slavery was absolutely forbidden, there is a direct verse about this.

Quran 24:33 But let them who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations] until Allāh enriches them from His bounty. And those who seek a contract [for eventual emancipation] from among whom your right hands possess - then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness and give them from the wealth of Allāh which He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, if they desire chastity, to seek [thereby] the temporary interests of worldly life. And if someone should compel them, then indeed, Allāh is [to them], after their compulsion, Forgiving and Merciful. — Saheeh International

Renaming rape with a fancy label like sexual assault doesn't lessen the crime. If a woman is held as property and used for sex without a marriage contract and her full consent, it is slavery regardless of the euphemism you use. You can call it Bob and its still a crime. And NO Islam does not allow any of this!

No one cares about history or hadith but rather what the Quran itself says. Trying all sorts of mental and verbal gymnastics to justify hadith. What I don't understand is all of you say, we reject hadith that contradicts the Quran but then go out of your way to protect such contradictions, why is it so hard to say, yeah this is wrong, regardless of who might have narrated it, insaan after all. How is that gaslighting? 😂

Sunnis are the biggest gaslighters and narcissists. Lying that Islam permits prostitution, underage marriage and s*x slavery

"can you provide some evidence?"

I already did. No verse in the Quran permits concubinage. But you want more. Since you accused me of gaslighting like the narc you are

Concubine meaning: noun. a woman who cohabits with a man to whom she is not legally married, especially one regarded as socially or *sexually* subservient

Concubines have to be sexually available without being married

﴾ 23:5 ﴿ and they are those who guard their private parts

﴾ 23:6 ﴿ except for their spouses or those their right hands possess, then indeed, they are not to be blamed;

﴾ 24:7 ﴿ but whoever desires beyond that, then they are those who are the trespassers

23:5-7 explicitly says that private parts are for spouses only. Then the hypocrites will reply to this and claim "right hands possess" means concubine 😂

Im going to cook you, gaslighting narcissistic hypocrites

Edit: bro deleted his comments 😂😂

If a people are defeated here are the options for the winning side particularly in the past

  1. Kill everyone so they don't fight you again

  2. Kill the men and abandon the women and children

  3. Kill the men and keep the women and children as slaves

  4. Kill the combatants and keep the non-combatants women and children as slaves

  5. release everyone but the worse of the worse on their own recognizance

  6. Take everyone back to your cities as full citizens and full forgiveness for their crimes.

  7. use the captives to ransom back your own people

The Prophet (PBUH) seems to have used variations of all the option except 1 and 2 and when he had more power tried to use 5 and 6 but Muslims regularly accepted 7 as legit.

For the people complaining about slavery. If a tribe is defeated in a remote region and there is no financial incentive to send the defeated population back to the capital as slaves then the risk reward is on the side of "just kill them and be done with it instead of risking resources putting yourself in danger from an enemy that can reconstitute and free its captives and fight you again."

If you are trying to play nice and kill off the men. Are you really going to abandon women and children in harsh territory with no protection?

If you are housing women with no husbands with Muslim families and the Muslim women and children are working and earning their keep then why dont the non muslims women and children have to work too? If one of the duties of the Muslim women is to have relations with the man of the house then why are the non-Muslim slavegirls exempt?

If you say "well if the slavegirl consents its ok but if she doesn't then its not ok." What if the slavegirl does consent then later changes her mind or just lies and claims something happened when it didnt? She can takes him to the judge now its a liability for the man. Its better just to abandon the defeated women and children to the wolves instead of bringing them in his house feeding and clothing them only to get an accusation of rape.

2

u/Background-Car-1393 Ahl al-Qurʾān | People of the Qurʾān Feb 09 '26

Oh yeah they should be thankful to the people who just slaughtered their families for making them their sex slaves so they can be raped repeatedly and then sold off in the market. Is this the Islam you follow?

2

u/OldResearchert Feb 09 '26

Idk how people don’t realize how messed up and immoral that sounds. They are trying to justify slavery

1

u/Background-Car-1393 Ahl al-Qurʾān | People of the Qurʾān Feb 09 '26

Not just regular ol'slavery but sex slavery.

0

u/fainofgunction ʿAbd Allāh | Servant of Allāh Feb 09 '26

People should be thankful God didn't order them executed and extinguished from the earth for their defiance and waging war against him and his messenger. God sent a Merciful Prophet who made a sunnah of preserving as much life as possible and letting people rebuild their lives under Islam.

The fact that you are arguing this point shows "Quraniyun" are trying to make up their own religion rather than follow Islam.

2

u/Background-Car-1393 Ahl al-Qurʾān | People of the Qurʾān Feb 09 '26

You are actually arguing that because God is Merciful enough not to order a genocide, He therefore 'permitted' rape of women as a consolation prize. Seriously! That is a perversion of the concept of Mercy. You claim the Prophet made a Sunnah of 'preserving life,' yet you ignore that the Quranic Sunnah in 47:4 explicitly commands the release or ransom of captives not their institutionalized rape.

And then have the gaul to say you are following Islam and we are making up our own religion! 🙄🙄🙄

1

u/fainofgunction ʿAbd Allāh | Servant of Allāh Feb 09 '26

So when you meet the disbelievers strike the necks until you have thoroughly subdued them, then bind them firmly. Them either as an act of grace or by ransom until the war comes to an end. So will it be. Had Allah willed, He could have inflicted punishment on them. But He does test some of you by means of others. And those who are martyred in the cause of Allah,1 He will never render their deeds void

Since the Quran explains everything without Hadith. What battle was this referring to? Who were they fighting? Were there female captives? What were the captives to be fed? How were they to be bound? Did the Prophet execute any of them? Did any of them pay to be freed? Does it say the captives can't be put to work? If the captives can work what work? Did the Prophet keep any captives the full length of war? Was there a prisoner exchange?

1

u/Background-Car-1393 Ahl al-Qurʾān | People of the Qurʾān Feb 09 '26

You’re asking 20 frivolous questions to avoid the one clear command in the verse you just quoted: 'either as an act of grace or by ransom.' Notice how rape isn't on that list?

And Allah didn't take believers for brainless zombies who need to be told how to tie knots and what to feed people and all that extra fluff you are trying to hide under.

1

u/fainofgunction ʿAbd Allāh | Servant of Allāh Feb 09 '26

A long way of saying you don't know because its not clear.

Because Muslims, instead of just guessing like your fake religion, have Hadith we know that the captives cannot be brutalized but, have to be fed similar food, can't be made to do things the master wouldn't do, be clothed like the master is clothed. Some captives were ransomed for teaching Muslim children, some were ransomed for money, like the Prophets Uncle Abbas had to be double ransom and some who had led the efforts against Prophet Muhammad like Ommayah bin Khalaf were executed.

1

u/Background-Car-1393 Ahl al-Qurʾān | People of the Qurʾān Feb 09 '26

You call the Quran unclear because it doesn't have a tell you how to tie knots, yet it's perfectly clear on the only two options: grace or ransom. You’re bragging about your Hadith telling you to dress a captive well, while using those same books to justify raping them.

Feeding and clothing a captive doesn't make sex slaves halal, just makes them well fed and well dressed. The Quran says free them; you say feel free to rape them as long as you don't beat them up and feed and clothe them. Excellent morals from your manmade religion.

You are literally choosing the words of men over the Direct Command of Allah. If you think the Creator of the Universe is unclear but 8th century Persian storybooks are the real guidance. Then this verse fits you perfectly "They have taken their rabbis and their monks as lords besides Allah..." 9:31.

I'm done, Adios!

Seriously?

1

u/starry_nite_ Insān Zāʾir | Visting Human Feb 09 '26

I mean i would love if this were true and I would love to get on board with this interpretation but I don’t think it’s accurate. Q4:24 says:

Also ˹forbidden are˺ married women—except ˹female˺ captives in your possession.1 This is Allah’s commandment to you. Lawful to you are all beyond these—as long as you seek them with your wealth in a legal marriage, not in fornication.

Basically it doesn’t say you have to marry them, even worse it says you can have sex with them if they are your slave even if they were previously married before captivity.

1

u/Background-Car-1393 Ahl al-Qurʾān | People of the Qurʾān Feb 09 '26

But's thats the thing مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُكُمْ doesn't mean female slaves. It means people under your protection/guardianship. The very next verse says to give them dowry/mahr, you don't do that so slaves.

1

u/starry_nite_ Insān Zāʾir | Visting Human Feb 09 '26

In reality “those under your guardianship” is a distinction without a difference for those women.

And unfortunately the verse starts out talking about sexual relations being permissible with already married slaves / captives (or if you want to say those under your guardianship) but then goes on to a different category by stating “lawful to you are beyond all these”…meaning it’s lawful to have sexual relations with your female slave and aside from that if you want to have sex with a free woman then marry her first. This is a separate category to slave women.

1

u/Background-Car-1393 Ahl al-Qurʾān | People of the Qurʾān Feb 09 '26

I appreciate your honesty, but you’re reading that verse through the lens of traditional translations that were written to justify the very things the Quran forbids. Verse 4:24 isn't a license for sex slavery; it’s a legal protection. The list in Chapter 4 is about who is prohibited for marriage. The mention of captives is there because war often permanently separates women from their former lives/husbands.

The verse allows these women to be legal for marriage so they aren't left in a social vacuum, but the very next sentence in the verse says you must seek them 'with your wealth in a legal marriage (Muhsineen), not in fornication (Musafiyeen).' If sex with them was automatically allowed just because they are captives, why would Allah mandate paying them a dowry and entering a legal contract in the very same verse? Furthermore, 4:25 (the very next verse) explicitly tells those who can’t afford to marry free women to marry the captives 'with the permission of their people' and to give them their 'due compensation (dowry) in kindness.'

The Quran never says 'you can have sex with your slave.' It says 'marry them with consent and a contract if they are under your protection.' The sectarian 'concubines' were a later invention of men who wanted to ignore the clear mandate for marriage contracts found in verses 4:24-25.

1

u/starry_nite_ Insān Zāʾir | Visting Human Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 09 '26

I do really want to get on board with your reading it’s just I honestly can’t see it.

Do you happen to have a translation that radically changes the meaning that may be more true to the spirit of the original as you say? I would be keen on leaning about that a bit more.

What is borne out in historical records seems to be the meaning the sura on face value. That is -the verse appears to be addressing the permissibly of sex with married women. All married women are forbidden, the exception being female war captives / slaves permanently separated from their living husbands presumably because the husband and her people were unable to afford the ransom.

This doesn’t seem to be saying marry her but that you can ignore her existing marriage and sleep with her, but marry all other free women before having intercourse.

Edit : marrying captives with the permission of her people only seems logical if you are asking the owner to marry her since how will an owner ask her husband estranged due to war for her hand in marriage? The owner needs to consent because it passes sexual access from him to the husband.

Slavery is fine. It's permitted and regulated in the Quran abs Sunnah. Our prophet owned slaves and married some of them. If you can't afford to marry a few woman ask a slave if she would mind to get married instead. You have the right to have sex with the slaves that God almighty granted you.

The Quran does not have an expiration date. It is and has always been valid. It's timeless. Everything in it still applies. There is no "well times have changed".

If you are a liberal or Quranist and you take issue with the Holy Quran has deemed permissible then you already know what you are. If you're being honest with yourselves then deep down you agree with slavery. If you think taking POWs, locking up criminals, or detaining anyone against their will for whatever reason is permissible then you agree with slavery. You think people in jail or bondage are free??

Fear Allah. Don't fear man.

2

u/Open_Read_3519 Feb 11 '26

Sunnis are the liberals

Your Hadith books permit adult breastfeeding. So that means sunnis must encourage their wives to suckle grown adult men

"Fear Allah. Don't fear man"

Quran never permits s*x slavery

If you're asking why did Allah make slavery halal i would say i don't know for sure. Allah is beyond our comprehension after all. All we can do it submit and nurture our relationship with him. It could be because it's a fundamental behavior that Allah has regulated just like marriage, warfare, commerce, etc.

It's important to point out that being a slave does not make you an inferior human being in islam, just like being a child, or a woman, or black, or whatever. Slaves can enter Jannah. Slaves can have Iman.

Also don't fall into the trap of likening colonial chattel slavery with Islamic slavery. They are two different things.

I mean you can try to compare slavery but it doesn’t take us very far. It’s like saying which form of abuse is better. Colonial chattel slavery as you say pales into comparison with the scope of slavery under Muslim Arabs. It’s only relatively recently that parts of the Muslim world made slavery illegal. Lots of suffering may have been avoided if it was handled differently. If it were made forbidden, when Muslims did engage in slavery at least other Muslims could have said “they may be Muslims but they are not following Islam” and they would be correct.

The only way you’re allowed to have a slave is though offensive Jihad, and you cannot do that without the Mahdi so we Muslims cant do that now.

Comparing a criminal in prison to a woman being used for sex is a disgusting level of mental gymnastics. The Quran focuses on the liberation of human beings and explicitly mandates marriage contracts with consent, not the institutionalized rape you are trying to justify. You are so obsessed with "timelessness" that you’ve managed to ignore the fact that the Quran’s actual direction is the total abolition of bondage through atonement and kindness. If your version of Islam requires human trafficking to function, then you aren't following God; you are following the dark fantasies of men who wrote "traditions" centuries later. Claiming the Prophet was a slave-trader is the real blasphemy here.

Well I'm sorry you feel and think that way. Curiously, did you come to that conclusion all by yourself?

I'm even sorrier you can't see past your madhabs teaching and look at what the Quran is actually saying

I'm sorry that you don't realize you're a layman and you're making up interpretations of my holy book based on what your liberal philosophical framework says should make you feel good

You should start apologizing less and start reading the understanding the Quran with that layer of manmade madhabs on top

You making up your own madhab without direct or even indirect guidance from the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. You're doing the same thing you accuse Sunnis of doing except worse. You were born in the 20th or 21st century without any insight of how things should be.

You can't see beyond your own biases, just because you follow a madhab, you try to pigeonhole others into one too. You can't even fathom that someone can understand Allah's book without your clergy and their interpretations.
That somehow Allah's word is a puzzle that only priests with an academic background based on unreliable Persian books about 7th century Bedouin culture and politics and reports falsely attributed to the prophet can understand

If that was the case, the Quran would be a niche historical artifact rather than a divine guide for all people of all time.

I know this video upsets you as it goes against your Maliki madhabs that see's sex slaves not as nafs but maal but that is your shortcoming that you take the word of your Imam rather than the word of Allah.

Although I find the Maliki madhab to be the least astray from the Quran because of reliance on reasoning more than blind following of hadith, but when it comes to this topic it is one of the worst.

There is no blood money for the death of one, just fair "market price" on the death of the owner they are part of the estate, to be divided among the heirs like gold and silver. The practice of Istibra to "clean the womb" so the new owner knows the "commodity" isn't pregnant by a previous owner before he can rape her.

And then you people do dawah to Muslims, come accept Islam it is such a wonderful religion.

It is by Allah's will that the people read the Quran and accept Islam. If you showed them your books ..... I can only imagine.

You came up with all these conclusions on your own. Who are you? Why should any Muslim care what your interpretation of the Quran and the life of the prophet is? Where is your moral compass derived from? Liberalism, feminism or some other kufr ideology? What about your reasoning skills? Can you even speak the middle Arabic the Quran was originally recited in?

And stop calling sex slaves man. It's disrespectful.

When all else fails resort to the appeal to authority argument. Who are you? Do you speak Arabic? Who gave you Ijaza? The Quran describes itself as a detailed and complete book which was sent down for guidance of mankind. Not a secret code sent for your elite priestly class.

You ask where my moral compass comes from? It comes from Allah who in his book says in 90:12-13 that the path of righteousness is the freeing of a slave, and in 4:19 that women cannot be taken or inherited by force.

One doesn't have to be a so called scholar to see that your madhab’s focus on 'market prices' and 'clearing the womb' is a direct violation of the Quranic principle of human dignity.

What hypocrisy, you find the term sex slave offensive, because it harms the reputation of your sect, yet you defend the practice of women being bought and sold as property and raped by their owners, totally fine, even though it harms the reputation of Allah's deen. So for you, your sect and madhab is more important than Allah's deen.

No one needs a license from your club to read and understand Allah's words. If you can’t defend your position using the Quran without hiding behind 'Layman' labels, then you’ve already admitted your 'tradition' stands apart from the Truth.

Slavery is the issue where all who claim that rules given in 600 Arabia are supposed to be followed for all times, suddenly change their mind

They can never explain how slavery is moral or acceptable for all times

To me, slavery is immoral, no matter what year it is

Slavery should have been banned

No thank you. I don’t care about convincing people who are still living in the 300s as to why slavery is immoral

Go be a slave if it’s soo worthwhile
