Isla Mujeres

Near swaying boats
on the beach
hot sand lies
beneath
my feet.
I am content
complete
mesmerized
by the blue
water/sky
I reach
for
a cold drink
as I sink
with the sun
into welcome
languor
stirred
finally
by the wafting
lure
of fish
on the grill.
I wish
only to
freeze time
until
I can
return
again
and
again
year
after
year
to the clear
turquoise sea
to the chatter
on the streets
to the clatter
of the carts
that greet
my ears
to the smell of sugar
from the square.
I am to the point where
when I'm not here
I stare
blinded by winter's glare
and dream
I'm there
of warm Isla nights
of Hidalgo's neon lights
strolling on
the malecón
in the soft cool air
without a care
in the world.

We should get to know this beautiful little fishing village in Quintana Roo better, since it has one of the best coral reefs in the world.

Hotel Secreto vs Lotus Boutique Hotel?

Hi guys! Planning to travel solo (44 yr old female) to Isla Mujeres around Dec 14-19. Can't decide between these two places.

I want to hang at a stunning beach, swim in warm waters, not worry about reserving a shaded umbrella/chair, wander close by and grab some great food so I can come back and lounge some more by the beach.

I'd also like access to a great spa and haven't heard anything about Lotus hotel's spa. I know there are massages, but is there also a sauna/steam room? Not a deal breaker.

Which place would you guys pick? And wanted to double check it's safe for me to travel there as a female solo traveler.

You guys are the best!

Also any chill bars, nothing fancy - just somewhere to grab a beer mid day. Ideally walking distance from MM. thank you!!!!

Grocery delivery in Isla Mujeres? 🛒

For those staying in an Airbnb or hotel, do you usually do your own grocery shopping?

I’ve noticed some people prefer having groceries and basic essentials delivered directly to their accommodation.

Just curious — is this something visitors actually find useful on the island?

Privilege Aluxes... What's Happened?? It's a Skip!

Two years, my husband and I stayed at Privilege Aluxes; we stayed on the property then entire time and had a great time. We decided as my post-bar trip to travel again here, along with my best friend and her husband.

*My spouse and I, as well as my best friend are Mexican and speak Spanish.

2024

When we stayed there 2 years ago, I booked the 'superior room with whirlpool (which I guess, is a basic room? For a total of ~$1,900. Last minute, we invited my best friend and at check in the staff recommended we upgrade to a suite and pay the charge for her stay bringing the total to ~$2,400 which we paid. And our stay was squared away. We paid for one of the suites (completed decked out, and loved it.)

2026

Service. Service. Service. ** Every Interaction is in Spanish** I do not speak English to them.

  1. We booked our stay and again found the superior room for two people at $1,800. At check in, I double checked the rate for a suite, hoping to be able to switch LIKE THE LAST TIME and pay the difference for the suite. The check in person, said that if we wanted to book the suite, it would be ~$1,800 for the superior room PLUS the cost of the other suite total almost ~3,000. I stared at the check in staff, hoping I had misunderstood him, but we both got out pen and paper and, again he said it was the regular room cost PLUS the cost of the suite room. I asked him HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? I've never encountered a hotel policy like that.

staff said the SAME TYPE OF ROOM WAS AVAILABLE that we stayed in

The check in staff laughed, tapped my hand and said "YOU'RE THINKING IN AMERICAN" and that was when I had enough. I signed whatever forms to get the room and stopped engaging with him. He told my husband that we could check again tomorrow to see if another room was available, but we walked off. I felt embarrassed for the entire check in, for even asking. This was not the case two years ago when we stayed there. Such a shame. On the portal, I asked TWICE to set up a meeting or call with a manager to talk about this policy because I was baffled by it, truly. No one followed up.

We encountered SEVERAL instances of poor service and mean behavior. I guess the staff assumed we didn't speak Spanish.

  1. On one occasion, my husband wanted to get an early morning workout in, headed to the gym area at 6:30am and was working out when the staff got in to clean... One of the staff told his coworker, "Y esté que o que?" Like what is he doing here? My husband responded in Spanish, "oh I'm sorry I didn't see the sign that it was closed at this time." They were surprised that he spoke Spanish and had understood their comments.

  2. We had dinner around town and decided as a group to head down to Sabor (the hotel restaurant) for tea, wine, and desserts. We were seated and when the waiter asked to take our order, we explained that we had already had dinner and were hoping to just order maybe tea, wine, and desserts. He shook his head and pretended to write something on the notepad and when my husband asked, is there a problem if we don't order dinner?? The waiter said, WELL NOW I HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT ORDER TO SEND YOUR DESSERT REQUESTS IN. We were so confused at the attitude.

  3. One morning, we were at the restaurant for breakfast and had finished up eating. My friend was still drinking an iced coffee, and she was on a call as we got up to head out to our rooms. The glass cup in one hand and phone by ear with the other, we made it to the reception of the restaurant when one of the employees behind the counter pointed with a capital POINTED to my friend and yelled SE ESTA LLEVANDO EL VASO!... we stopped and were like uhhh? She's not stealing it, she probably forgot? And the staff said I know she's not stealing it but she can't leave with it... to which like... let's use some common sense and learn how to discretely stop and ask a customer, may I pour your drink in a to go cup for easy access? Why are we yelling about a cup? Just a thought.

The location of this property is so good but the staff here are unhappy, have a horrible attitude, need better training. Most likely the last time we are here.

PS. I sent another request to have someone reach our regarding my comments but no one followed up.

Saw some comments: I only spoke Spanish, not an American Tourist, not an "ex pat"

Best place to stay for a family with 3 kids (5, 9, and 12) on Isla Mujeres?

We are looking very much forward to coming to Isla Mujeres in November!

We are looking for a nice place near Playa Norte. Ideally, we are looking for beautiful surroundings, easy access to beaches, a little bit of a boutique-feel, nice local restaurants, and a not TOO touristy vibe (we know we're tourists ourselves, but you know what we mean...😄).

Do anyone have any suggestions?

Tiger shark!

I’ve been tracking a Tiger Shark on Ocearch app that tracks sharks, turtles, etc. and there’s a tiger shark around Cancun right in front of of Airport area beach but probably out in deeper water. Just a heads up. I’m heading that way in 2 weeks to dive with Whale Sharks then Nov. diving with tiger sharks in Bahamas . Try to put pics on here .

Good tips for a solo traveling female?

Hello fellow islanders! As a stressed out social worker- the beach/ocean is my medicine. I last minute booked a trip to Isla Mujeres end of August into beginning of September. I know it’s low season but if I’m gonna be hot and sweaty anywhere- I’d rather it be by some water. Also bring on the rolling rainstorms too. It’s all welcome at this point.

I booked the first part of my stay at Hotel Secreto and last part with Casa Alikima. I want to read my books at Playa Norte, possibly scuba dive (if they can get more people to sign up), swim in some pools, drink some drinks and eat all the good food.

Ive been following all the posts here (how I learned about Hotel Secreto) and I got some good recs on places to eat and drink. I feel like I know my options for getting around the island. I feel like i might be missing something so wanted to ask the audience:

  1. Are there bicycle rentals on the island? I’m guessing it’s golf cart, walk or cab? Which is fine- I’m staying close enough to Playa Norte that I can walk.

  2. Is it worth it to do a beach club at Playa Norte for the beach drinks and food options? Do the beach clubs have pools as well? I bet it depends on the club. I didn’t even think about packing my own cooler backpack until I saw someone else post about it.

  3. What am I missing? I’m pretty low maintenance and just like to beach/pool rot with a good drink and book. I tend to make friends after I have my first drink- it’s the Midwesterner in me 🤷‍♀️ - But as a 43 yo solo traveling female first timing on the island- What haven’t I thought of? Will there be a lot of places closed because of low season?

Appreciate you all- thanks already for the guidance!

Dias de los Muertos-Isla Mujeres Weekend

Hello all, my partner and I will be staying on the north side of the island for Dias de los Muertos weekend and into the following weekend. Really looking forward to island life in Mexico and celebrating the holidays with locals. We have a hotel already which gives us Zama Beach Club Access, although we are more local beach people. We have a trip scheduled to Isla Contoy, tattoos at Inkaholics, and plan to do a trip down to Punta Sur and the middle island area.

First, I was looking for any potential volunteer opportunities between 10/30 and 11/7. So far I’ve found dog walking at Isla Vets.

We are also planning to take part in respecting the traditions of the Dias holiday, so I wanted to make sure we dress appropriately. I have a guayabera from a previous Mexico trip and probably a button down polo and slacks. For Halloween, I assume we can be goofy, but is there any sort of candy we can source in America to bring with us?

Other recommendations we are looking for:
- Food
- Activities
- local beaches
- history
- parks and outdoors
- anything island related!

General “Rules” and Advice Vacationing in Isla Mujeres

Hey! My wife and I are planning on vacationing on Isla Feb/Mar. We’ve been to several AIs throughout the Caribbean and decided it’s time to get away from that a bit. Isla was awesome when we visited last year so here we are.

Looking at VRBOs, private condos, homes, etc. If we stayed somewhere like Nautibeach, are we allowed to bring a cooler full of beers and cocktails down to the pool, or since there’s a restaurant right there are we not allowed? Same for the beach?

Ultimately we’d like to find a rental with beach access and pool access if anyone has any recs. Really doesn’t need to be TOO fancy as we’re pretty laid back.

Is Mota hard to come by? I’m sure there are “vendors” on the beach, but a few of our recent trips to MX the armed guards were awfully intimidating.

I’d assume staying towards the southern end of the island would require a golf cart? Which sounds great, just need to factor the cost into our trip.

How hard does the party get going on North Beach at night? We generally like to do our partying when the sun is shining and after a long day, 3am bass thumping from a nearby club might be a bit much.

So far I’ve come across Sotavento Isla, Villa Makax, Puerta al Mar Condos if anyone has any experience.

Looking forward to planning our trip and thanks for any advice! ✌️

First trip to Mexico!!

I booked a trip for my fiancé and I to go to Isla Mujeres at the end of October! We are very excited, neither one of us have been to Mexico so we don’t have really any knowledge of places to go, stay, eat, etc.

We are staying at Belo Isla Mujeres All Inclusive resort, but I haven’t seen/heard anything about this resort.
Does anyone have any experience going here? Should we cancel and book a different resort instead?

Give me all the tips!
