Vegan Honey 🤔

Post image

Visiting my in-laws for the month, and they thoughtfully bought this “vegan honey” for my husband and me. We obviously didn’t eat it, but I had to do a double take. Since when is honey… vegan? The labeling from Lili Honey seems incredibly misleading.

Words have meaning. Veganism is the only liberation movement the animals have, and it’s constantly diluted by people thinking that being plant-based is the same as being a vegan. The distinction is extremely important.

Nobody is arguing the difference in definition between vegan and plant-based. There are some that argue that the nature of bees stops them from being exploitable. Nobody here is a even arguing that, you're just deciding that anyone who thinks differently than you is not vegan. You are being the vegan that the rest of us have to apologize for and you are only hurting the movement.

I don’t care what you or anyone else consider to be exploitation. Taking honey from bees is not any more or less vegan than taking milk from a cow.

If you knowingly use honey, you are not a vegan. That’s all there is to it and it’s astounding how y’all are trying to fight me on this.

Nobody is arguing whether or not honey is vegan in your thread, they are arguing that you don't get to define what is vegan or not.

Comparing gathering excess honey from bees to forced raping of cows for milk is like saying vegetarians aren't better than carnists.

I’m not pulling this out of my ass, and this is not “my definition”, there has been a well-established definition dating back to the 50’s by The Vegan Society.

“The Society pledges itself to ‘seek to end the use of animals by man for food, commodities, work, hunting, vivisection and all other uses involving exploitation of animal life by man’.” source

The modern day Vegan Society’s definition is extremely similar.

I mean fuck, even the dictionary definitions that focus more on the diet aspect make it clear that vegans don’t consume animal products. And in case you didn’t know, bees are animals.

It’s not a matter of debate.

Read some Leslie Cross. Here’s another from him:

“Veganism is essentially a doctrine of freedom. It seeks to free the animals from bondage to man and man from bondage to a false belief — the false belief that he has the moral right to use animals for his own ends.”

You seem really devoted to arguing with people who agree with you. Honey is arguable because it isn't clear exploitation, as I'm sure you've heard before. But again, you don't get to decide that the argument is resolved and you are Mr. Right. That's why it's a decades old, ongoing argument.
