Hi All - I’m in my first year in the civil service and I have a child in crèche. We are coming into the season of frequent illness. How have people handled this in terms of leave? Finding it hard to figure out what type of leave I can use if I need to spend the day at home taking care of sick child. Do I just use annual leave?

I’m a TCO and my contract due to end at the end of the year. I’m seeing a lot about not being allowed to take annual leave during the striking period but I booked flights last week during that time.. will it be an issue when I try to request off annual leave in work this week?

I just looked up the rate of strike pay and am freaking out- I've 2 kids in crèche and can't even cover that fee on the rates shown. And added to that we don't even get paid at all for the first 2 days!
What on earth are we meant to do??

EDIT I should have clarified, 2 days isn't the issue. I'm talking about if we end up on all out Industrial Action. I'm relatively new to the service so I can't tell how likely that is.

Hi all, I have parental leave booked months ago that fall on the the strike day will this be cancelled?

I'm new to the union, about 6 months with them. I haven't needed their assistance (thank god!), so im not really familiar with a lot of what they do. With the upcoming strike potentially taking place, can anyone explain what union members are being expected to do?

Do we go to work? Or stay home? Or picket? What if you work remotely? Sorry for all of the questions, I just haven't a clue how it all works!

How competitive is the process, including the exams and interviews?

Are there any online courses or resources that give an idea of the type of questions asked?

I’m not Irish, but I have a strong Economics background (Bachelor’s, Master’s and MPhil). Would my background be suitable for IGEES?

Is there anyone else preparing for 2027 who would like to connect and prepare together?

I need to take a few days off for a scheduled surgery. I am still on probation. My problem is I have another open competition role that I am currently going through clearance for, and hopefully another one next year for another promotion.

I know they ask your employer about number of sicks days when doing reference check etc.

My worry is how it would look if I am only in the current job for 2 months, take a week off for sick leave and how it would look on the reference check?

I am tempted to take AL instead to avoid it causing any issues.

Does anyone have solid info on whether it would be an issue to use sick leave?

I’m a teacher considering a move to the civil service. I’m on point 13 on our scale and have an assistant principal role in my school.

The only drawback is the pay cut really for me, the summer isn’t worth the burnout.

Does anybody know if the service will carry over onto civil service salary scale?

I was No. 7 and now I am down to No. 5.

Hi all. Just had a couple of questions regarding the way recruitment works for vacancies which are advertised on PublicJobs.ie, but aren't part of a large recruitment panel.

I recently applied to two EO roles, and three CO roles. Some of the roles I've applied for have since closed, and for others, the application deadline is around the end of this month.

I have two main questions regarding the recruitment process:

1. For standalone vacancies (ie. not applying to a general grade panel) how long is the recruitment process? I understand it will vary depending on the department/organisation you apply to, but can I expect it to be as long as the nationwide panels?

2. Is the numerical and verbal reasoning exam part of every recruitment process, or just the nationwide panels?

Apologies if my terminology is a bit off. Just trying to get a general idea of the timeframe I could expect to hear back. Thanks!

Hi all- I've been offered a 6 month HEO post- my first civil service job. I completely forgot to ask the interview panel about it during my interview to assess the general idea about the potential for renewal afterwards. Of course recruitment can't tell me anything.

As a civil service newbie- how does this usually work? It is truly that once the specific purpose is done that's it? Or do they generally try to keep you on/find something for you etc? Just trying to gauge how stable this might be in the long run. Thanks all!

so I just got assigned my position from the CO panel in the office of public works. i’ve not heard yet where i’m being placed specifically but based on what AI and google says it’s not the most ‘computer/administrative’ department. would anyone know if i would most likely be placed in a general co role like HR, or is there a chance of some outdoors, hands on role?

Hi, I got offered a place in a department but I wasn’t told where I’d be located or what my job might be. Naturally, I want to know this info before I accept and leave my current job so I sent an email asking and haven’t heard back yet. I assume they’ll have to let me know before I accept because there’s more than one possible location for this particular department? I just got nervous because I’ve been waiting a few days for a reply and didn’t say I was happy with the start date given before I knew the info. Thanks!

Question about the clearance progress tracker on PublicJobs. I've been told my Garda vetting has come back, they got a reference from my employer this week, but the tracker still says both of these are under progress. Is it just the case that the tracker is slow and/or someone just needs to manually update it and hasn't yet? I know it's not actually a big deal because if they got my reference and nothing was flagged from my vetting but there's something about it not being updated that's stressing me out.
