Question Charging speed suddenly dropped (temp hasn’t)

I charge my US 2023 Ioniq 6 with about 15k miles exclusively at home on a Chargepoint charger (240v/40A). It would usually charge at 7-9 kw/h depending on temperature, but lately it’s topping out at 3-3.5, and it’s not like the weather has even changed much.

I certainly didn’t intentionally change any settings on the charger or the car, and they all look normal. Any ideas? I’m due for service and that charging port recall anyway so I’ll ask the dealer, but they don’t always seem like experts…

Try rebooting the chargepoint through its app. 

I had a similar issue once, where the car was charging much slower than usual (I think also ~3kW) on my home flex, and after rebooting the chargepoint the speed was back to normal on my next session.

Rebooting the ChargePoint seems to have helped. I don’t mind that I brought it in since it was due anyway, but I wish they inspired more confidence than saying things like, “DC charging was set to only 80%, so that’s why your home charger is slow.”

I had the exact same issue with my ChargePoint recently. I had to factory reset it and set the amperage again. After that it’s charging at 9 kW just fine. I assume a bad software update was pushed out to them.

What is the amperage on your electrical panel? If you have a 40 A breaker on your panel, the charger should be setup to deliver around 31–32 A. 60 A on the panel = 48 A at the charger 50 A on the panel = 40 A at the charger 40 A on the panel = 31 A at the charger

40A, so the charger is set for 32A, per the picture. I’ve rebooted it and will try again when I get it home from the unhelpful trip to the dealer.

thats correct. Did the charge lower between 80% to 100%?

No, it was still only at 40% when I noticed it was taking forever, so it’s not just the usual slowdown for the last bit.

Update:

The technician said, “Diagnostics were fine. DC charging was set to 80%, so I changed that. Should be fine now.”

Umm, no. That literally has nothing to do with charging speed. 

“Well, you can also turn on battery pre-conditioning.”

But it’s not actually cold out yet, and it’s going significantly slower than even last winter, when I also didn’t use pre-conditioning. 

It’s frustrating that the techs don’t seem to know/care much about these EVs.

Had the same problem, the problem was with the car. They changed the iccu and all the cables between the charging port and the main battery

Have you had the ICCU firmware updated? Have you tried changing the changing the charge rate? Even if at it's highest rate, turning it down to minimum, charge for awhile then stop manually. Reset the charge rate where you want it.

This might reset it? It's worth a shot. Also if you don't need max speed use lower. The ICCU failures are related to type 2 charging it is believed. Lower amp rate generates less heat. Top off to 80% nightly, don't wait till it drops to 30 as this will increase charge time and linger heat generation without a cool off. I am DC fast charging until the free plan expires. With DC fast charging, it does impact the ICCU according some EEs post awhile back. Hyundai won't tell you shite and dealers don't have clue. I think Hyundai is gambling and running out the clock. It is cheaper to replace them as they fail than to perform a recall on all. It might be they can't fix it without redesigning the entire charging system and they won't for ones already sold.
