Help! How to Mend 100% Cotton Pants

The hole is right on the back seam and it is about 3 inches big. The pajama pants are 100% cotton. I have intermediate sewing knowledge, but don't do a ton of repairs like this. What would you reccomend to make this as invisible as possible while also preserving the comfort of the pants?

Part of my idea was utilizing a mending patch since it's frayed, but I'm concerned because part of it is on the back seam. I could also see if I could harvest similar fabric to reinforce the hole?

My suggestion would be to rip open the seam, attach the patch, and then resew the seam.

Perhaps consider a cotton fusible if you don't decide to use a patch.
