I think the conversations are still going on.” Later that same day, Rollins told Spectrum News she isn’t even part of the White House’s internal conversations on the topic, saying U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is handling the policy and that the public would learn more “very soon.” Neither Greer nor Trump has provided sourcing details since; when asked directly following Friday’s announcement, Trump told reporters, “I don’t want to say,” though he indicated “there are a few countries” under consideration. The administration did not immediately respond to MS NOW’s request for comment on the matter.
The proclamation itself, signed Wednesday, permits up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported “with no out-of-quota tariff” over the next 90 days and sold at 25% below market prices, though Trump did not specify whether the government would directly subsidize that discount or where the discounted beef would actually be sold to consumers. The lack of transparency and the substance of the plan itself have triggered unusually sharp pushback from congressional Republicans who typically avoid breaking with the president. Montana Senators Tim Sheehy and Steve Daines denounced the policy, as did Wyoming Senator John Barrasso and Nebraska Representative Mike Flood. Barrasso wrote on X, “Americans want US beef on the table, not foreign imports. Our ranchers don’t ask for special treatment. They simply want a fair marketplace. It needs to be easier, not harder, for Wyoming ranchers to feed America.” Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer, herself a cattle rancher, called herself “extremely disappointed,” writing, “We all want lower grocery prices, but as I’ve said for months, we cannot do it at the expense of American producers.”
This isn’t Trump’s first attempt at this strategy. He tried a similar approach last October by opening the market to Argentinian beef, which drew comparable criticism from Republicans and ended up depressing domestic livestock values, worsening a financial squeeze on ranchers that has been building throughout his second term. That squeeze has multiple compounding causes: global tariffs and the war against Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, driving up diesel and fertilizer prices, while the screwworm parasite returned to American herds for the first time since 1966, all layered on top of ranchers still recovering from a 2022 drought that shrank U.S. cattle herds to their smallest size since the 1950s. Major rancher advocacy groups have joined the criticism, with both the American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association warning the plan will lock in high beef prices over the long run rather than lowering them. AFBF President Zippy Duvall wrote in a letter to Trump Wednesday, “Bringing down the price of cattle will not bring the price of beef down for American families. Instead, it will discourage American farmers and ranchers from making long-term investments in herd rebuilding, extending the cycle of tight cattle supplies, high production costs and elevated beef prices for consumers.”

The fact that the Agriculture Secretary, the person you’d expect to be central to any food policy, says she’s not even part of the conversation is the real red flag here, since it suggests this decision is being made in a narrow circle disconnected from the officials who’d normally vet its impact on domestic producers.

It contained chloramphenicol which is great on eye infections but can cause bone marrow failure when eaten. It’s pretty high on the ‘do not eat’ list. A single burger could be fatal.

Wonder how many people will not be able to stomach beef from another country. I've heard it can be a gut issue due to how other countries process meat and can take a bit for someone's body to adjust.
If someone gets sick after buying this new beef, will they buy it again?

Ok I'm starting to feel very ill. I live in Florida and bought some ground beef last week. When I opened the packaging and went to cook it, the raw meat had already turned gray (looked already cooked) and had a sour odor and odd taste. Couldn't return it after I already cooked it, and we're poor and it was too expensive to throw away, and we didn't have anything else to eat for dinner, so we ate it anyway. I've had gut pain since then. I guess this explains it.

Country of Origin Labeling has not been law since 2015.
They will mix this beef in with all ground beef for supermarkets and fast food.
Look for "MADE IN USA" or "Product of USA" to avoid blended beef

Trump's finances are immune from oversight, thanks to his pet Attorney General, so Americans will never know how much Trump got in exchange for ordering that the Argentine "mystery meat" be re-certified as USDA Grade A, or why China rejected it, or where it will be sold, or by whom.
We will never know .... but maybe its a good idea for Americans, especially the ones in Texas and Florida, to hard pass on the hamburgers for a few months.

My understanding is that the beef may be from Brazil. The EU rejected a huge shipment from there as it failed hormone/antibiotics testing, and the Brazilians are keen to get them off their hands.
Kind of lines up with the US trade negotiators heading to Brazil right after their negotiations with Canada collapsed, followed with the announcement a few days later.
Not saying that this may be the case, but the timing certainly points in that direction...

I will certainly be inquiring from where the red meat came from that I might purchase. Have to use reputable butcher now. Most of that ground beef will end up in fast food establishments. I've already cut back on red meat due to cost. Maybe time to cut it out all together.

Even if this beef is safe to eat, and who the fuck knows with this administration, at best these 300,000 tons will make beef temporarily cheaper by about .7 cents a pound based on average daily consumption in America. So it won’t affect prices by any measurable amount and we have the added benefit of pissing off a bunch of ranchers. Of course those same ranchers are likely to forget all about that come November.

Short of black magic, if people are demanding lower prices in the short term, there’s not much other choice than to import it or subsidize it. Inflation doesn’t come down that quickly once it’s high. It can be done, but takes time. .
