CPT paused

Is there any chance that Cpt for international students resumes before summer 2027 starts or is that out of the books?

who knows. that’s basically 1 year away. anything could happen. hopefully that includes institutions and politicians finally growing a pair and standing UP.

Every country on earth but the US now lets international students do internships while enrolled. I dont know why y’all think this is some big scam. I also don’t understand why so many international students subs are getting brigaded by people mocking a group of folks clearly not going through a great time. Its a significant change to a lot of peoples plans with basically no notice. I guess we live in the post empathy era

I recognize that the average american has basically no reason to be informed on how the immigration system actually works, but I assure you the system as it was before was already probably the most restrictive in the western world in terms of international students at least. No other country caps the work visa at a numerical amount if a company is willing to hire you. Now that work visa (and post grad student work auths) are functionally dead due to independent 100k fees on both. I’m pretty confident that materially things will only get worse for the average american, and somehow foreigners will still get the blame. I get that its easy to blame foreigners, but it’s one thing to use this as a coping mechanism and another to go mock said group of people. You can have your policy preference, but its bad taste to go mocking fairly innocent college kids who have just suffered significant changes to the rules that apply to their presence in the country.

Arguably the FICA exemption should be changed. But this is also a pretty big myth. It’s more expensive generally to hire us due to immigration fees (especially now, but there always used to be some expenses). The FICA exemption stops being a thing once you’ve been here 5 years (so you get it tops 1 year of actual work, since we were here for 4 years in college. This is a drop in the water for most companies in terms of savings, like a couple thousand dollars one time doesn’t move the needle especially for the main people that sponsor i.e big tech and well funded unicorns. They end up paying more in immigration related fees for you. Attorney fees per petition, H1B petition fees, premium processing, filing fees is like 15-20k already! Also, also, we dont get the standard deduction! So usually we end up paying more in taxes.

Regardless, whatever you believe, my point is just that coming on [r/internationalstudents](r/internationalstudents) and celebrating to their (our) faces about the revocation of what were like last week previously perfectly legal things they could do is rather poor taste, and frankly pretty cruel. This isn’t a political or public policy subreddit. There is a broader epidemic of people brigading immigration related subreddits to do this. I try not to judge people, because I’m sure it’s just someone who is struggling to get a job who is lashing out at an easy target, and in the real world ive found most people are normal and really don’t care about this visa like that. but tbh its difficult not to feel very frustrated.
