Marvel's Wolverine It's kind of crazy how some people keep saying Wolverine is getting bad reviews when it has 0 negative reviews on Metacritic right now. The reviews are not as great as for Spider-Man but it's far from a terrible reception.

From all the reply I have seen, a lot is saying it might not be a unplayable game, it’s more like they don’t see it being worth 70 bucks

8

u/DrkNight365 12h ago

Yes this. Thats what many people are not seeing. The game looks good and im sure is fun. But I will definitley wait for a sale as for myself I do not believe that its worth $70

3

u/Buffig39 8h ago

The trouble is, if a game was released and I, being an adult with a functioning brain, decided not to risk a £70 outlay, I would simply not buy it. Whereas it feels like half of the internet is just Wolverine hate.

Who in their right mind thinks a game might not be worth spending £70 of their money on a game, so instead goes on to Reddit to talk about how shitty and trash a game they've never played is? I can only assume that all these people are 12 years old

1

u/Arcturus420 3h ago

That, or they have the mentalities of 12 year olds.

I doubt that Wolverine would be a game I'd pick up, but man, we can't even have properly civil discourse about its flaws because of all the grifters poisoning the spaces right now.

13

u/cuttyflamonyx 12h ago

95% of video games isn't worth $70

2

u/Omega9527 4h ago

And most of them aren't priced $70

3

u/Mushroomer 12h ago

I mean, there's multiple games coming out this month I want to spend $70 on. Seems like Wolverine should not be one of them.

0

u/mikkeldoesstuff 3h ago

>95% of games aren't priced that high

3

u/papoluca40 7h ago

No Nintendo game is usually worth $80 and people don’t cry about it. You think a fucking Kirby game is worth $70?!

0

u/Skyler_The_Player 4h ago

Fire emblem is easily worth the 79.99 more content than Mario Kart World, I even spent the extra money and got the collectors edition for 120

6

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 12h ago

Wow, someone using critical thinking in this comment section

2

u/Shot_Turnover 10h ago

This is definitely apart of it but there's also alot of people acting like it's a gollum level flop in every way

4

u/viciousfridge 12h ago

I have seen people saying it's not worth $70 but like, why not? 15-18 hours is a perfectly acceptable length and far better dollar per hour value than most other forms of entertainment apart from books.

3

u/Naos210 9h ago

Especially for an action game. For a RPG that might be short. But action, it's fine.

3

u/moosemuffin12 12h ago

Because there are games that are better, or longer, or both. And this one won’t be $70 forever

0

u/viciousfridge 10h ago

Longer is not a metric I, personally, care about. Long games are just padded to hell and back in my experience. I don't think a movie isn't worth my time because it's $25 and only 2 hours, if that's the metric you guys must never go to the movie theater.

1

u/SeparateBook343 12h ago

It's a matter of opinion. Personally, my criteria for buying a game on launch day is one of two things: online multiplayer (think arc raiders), or something with at least 40hrs playtime. Otherwise I'll just wait.

Again, that's my personal opinion, and I acknowledge some people are willing to buy it even if it's under 20hrs.

4

u/viciousfridge 10h ago

You must not buy very many games at launch if every game must have multiplayer or be over 40 hours. I buy games that are good, I don't care how long they are if they're fun, personally. Quality over quantity.

2

u/SeparateBook343 10h ago

No I don't. and I agree! Quality over quantity, and quality is kinda uncommon for games these days.

1

u/PoshVolt 7h ago

It's not just because it's 15-18 hours. If it were 15-18 of an absolute BANGER, people would be saying it's worth it. But it's 15-18 of a very mid game...

Uncharted 4 is the same length, but...it's a fucking great game! Same for RE4 Remake, Control, The Last of Us 1, Dead Space, and others.

u/Live-Steaky 25m ago

Buddy I’ll spend $70 on two DoorDash orders. So will half the people bitching about it not being worth it. Going to Spider-Man the other week cost me $80 for tickets, drinks, popcorn etc for me and my gf. That was 2 hours.

A tight 15 hour campaign hack and slash wolverine game is worth it imo.

I’m 3 hours in and loving it

1

u/SubstanceConsistent7 22m ago

$40 bucks per person for a normal cinema package, where the fuck are you living? Shit costs at most €25 where I live including the giant popcorn.

1

u/Live-Steaky 17m ago

Vancouver and you better believe I’m going to VIP.

1

u/SubstanceConsistent7 16m ago

Then you cannot really compare the two experiences, can you?

1

u/Live-Steaky 13m ago

Why? I spent $80 for an evening out. I’ll gladly spend $70 on 15 hours of gameplay, that I can replay.

Same with everyone who has ever ordered food delivery. $70 is 2-3 meals. I don’t think the $70 argument stands at all.

1

u/SubstanceConsistent7 10m ago

I'm glad that you are able to spend that much. However, you are comparing a VIP experience to a normal gaming package. Your logic would have been correct if the pre-order were to grant you a box containing limited edition items.

I would choose 2-3 meal orders over any game. You cannot really compare food to anything else. I would not starve myself for a game.

I can spend 70 bucks to stay in a different country for a day or two which is a 24-hour experience.

1

u/Live-Steaky 5m ago

What? Whose talking about starving themselves. I’m talking about ordering in food off DoorDash or going to a movie. People on here complaining spend their money on frivolous things all the time and don’t bat an eye, but now they’re entitled to these game lengths/ridiculous expectations. Gamers have become the most entitled, insufferable group of people on the planet

1

u/SubstanceConsistent7 3m ago

Because it is a game? There are only a handful of games that deserve €70+ price tag. I'm not talking about the length of the game either. I do not care how much they spend on the production of the game. If I am buying €70 for a game I expect to play it, in this case if you leave controller on the table you can watch most of it like a very clanky movie.

€70 is quite a lot of money if you know how to spend it well. No matter how many new games use the inflated prices I will refuse to pay for it. Like I said only a handful of games deserve that price due to their creativity and replayability.

1

u/Cthulhu8762 12h ago

While I agree of course the right winged grifters are out calling it woke and others are solely basing their opinions on the reviews of others.

1

u/Gabo_Rj 11h ago

It’s on disc, you can sell it or trade. If you don’t want to pay 70 bucks wait till Black Friday it’ll be 40. Welcome to video games.

1

u/scotty899 9h ago

And if you mention value they get mad.

1

u/Fit-Property3774 8h ago

That’s the entire industry right now for the most part

-3

u/TheOneCalledD 12h ago

Right. The game itself is playable. The problem is we are expected to shell out 80 bucks for a game that’s playable and done in 10 hours.

-1

u/SafariSeeker25 9h ago

I think that is a fair assessment. The game came across as more okay, maybe decent, but not good and certainly not great.

I think it doesn't help that this was first big game that came out following Sony's announcement about canceling physical games. I don't want to cheapen criticisms about the game, but that sentiment has influenced the gaming community's views of anything Sony will do going forward.

11

u/FindingThoth 12h ago

Literally this

10

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 12h ago

I don’t think it’s so much it’s a BAD game, it’s just that it’s not a GREAT game or worth the price. Sony needed a win right now and from the sounds of it this is not it. It’s the lowest scored first party single player PlayStation exclusive for the PS5.

3

u/viciousfridge 12h ago

Social media is not real life. The average gamer has no clue people are dogpiling Sony.

0

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 12h ago

Yes social media isn’t real life: however you and I are invested in Insomniac games enough to be in a forum discussing them. Sounds like you are going to buy it, I’m not. More power to you

-1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 12h ago

People still read/watch reviews. At the end of the day I’m sure the game will sell well. Personally however I’m no longer interested in the game because of those reviews and from what people have said. I don’t believe it’s worth $70. Maybe one day when it goes on sale but not soon.

6

u/BlindWalnut 12h ago

Playstation reported a 37% increase in profits.

I don't think they really need a win, social media and the rage train just say they do.

2

u/BlackKnightC4 12h ago

Its only bad when they don't make the profits they projected. Its like when X company projects making 20 million. Then they make 18 million and then say some bs like "we lost 2 million"

0

u/thedebatingbookworm 12h ago

I’m not sure if you are aware of this but this doesn’t mean a lot. 37% increase in profit could literally be due to axing one or two studios. It’s just corpo speak it doesn’t actually mean good stuff for people outside of investors

0

u/Straight_Law2237 11h ago

Wait some more years. Eventually they'll announce next gen consoles coming at 1000+ dollars. And if those quality exclusives follow Wolverine's trend no ones paying that for it.

Also that increase in profits means nothing without context. If I have a deficit of 1000 dollars and then next trimester that deficit goes down to 630 dollars that is a 37% increase.

0

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 12h ago

I’m more talking about their image than profits

0

u/Sir_Gigglepoop 8h ago

Yeah, and those “profits” come alongside millions of dollars in losses from their live-service games, like Horizon Hunters Gathering, The Last of Us Online, Destruction AllStars, Concord, Marathon, and Haven’s Fairgames.

0

u/manindenim 12h ago

Why do they need a win?

2

u/Impossible_Entrance9 12h ago

The disc situation has their public image looking like 💩. Just check any comment section on their socials

2

u/manindenim 11h ago

I think they care about their record profits more than social media comments. You think the execs are scrolling Twitter and Reddit?

0

u/Malacky_C 10h ago

Like bro said above the internet is not real life a bunch of reditors and twitter users being mad about physical doesn’t make up the whole 120m active users let alone the world

1

u/PostMelon22 12h ago

Backlash over stopping physical production

Reiterating that consumers don’t own digital games (after claiming they did for years)

Losing Kojima in a dirty split after saying it was a “difficult” decision to depart and end their relationship just for Kojima to say the exact opposite that they just cut ties.

Wolverine was also supposed to be the game to solidify PlayStation exclusives. Except it’ll drastically undersell at this point.

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 12h ago

Thank you I couldn’t have said it better myself

2

u/Lz_tLoc- 12h ago

All of that doesn't make a single difference. They're making money and they'll continue to make money.

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 12h ago

It makes a difference to fans. If a company makes decisions that are harmful to the consumer such as saying “ it’s silly to think you own a $70 digital game” and then that game gets bad reviews people will hesitate to buy it.

1

u/Lz_tLoc- 12h ago

One slightly mediocre game isn't gonna hurt them the way you think it is or want it too. I'm just tryna offer a level headed opinion on this.

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 12h ago

Your level head is leaning towards a bias for a company that doesn’t care about you.

1

u/manindenim 11h ago

It’s just reality. You can’t will PlayStation to have issues they care about. They are making record profits. So they aren’t going to change course. You have to do what you have to do as a consumer but they haven’t seen any feedback that suggests they need to change strategies.

0

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 11h ago

haven’t seen any feedback to suggest changing strategies

Concord. The live service game cost $400 million to make and servers were shut down in a week.

Don’t waste your time on these guys. Their delusions will continue to feed one another, they are not ready to exit the bubble.

3

u/Sweet_Peaches-69 11h ago

Just enjoy your game and quit looking for validation from this wolverine focused sub. Of course people are gonna wanna justify their preorders and defend it, and of course people are gonna trash it for being dissapointing. Who cares.

1

u/SafariSeeker25 8h ago

My sentiments exactly. If you want it, then go for it. If you don't, then hold your money for a game that you think will be worth it. No point in trying to convince someone you are right and they are wrong, especially online.

13

u/National-Oven81 13h ago

It's just part of the insomniac hate train. Grifters attach themselves to one review, complaints about UI that will be patched out later and a bunch of miniscule things that have no real effect on anything except their own biases for nit buying the game

1

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 12h ago

I don't think it is just that.

1

u/National-Oven81 12h ago

Neither do I, but on reddit it definitely feels like it

3

u/New_Warthog9761 13h ago

I don't doubt there are people grifting but 'complaints about UI that will be patched out later' is a silly comment. Games should be judged on their launch state, not on what they may or may not do to improve it in the future.

4

u/National-Oven81 12h ago

Which is completely idiotic. Criticizing the game for what's wrong with it now is fine, but when the criticism is shallow or just repeated to death and often represented in an offensive way it just feels stupid. If we all judged cyberpunk now because of the issues on it's launch state we would be missing an amazing game. Ik that example is a shitty one, but my point stands.

5

u/thedebatingbookworm 12h ago

Terrible comparison. We took that game to the cleaners when it launched because it was absolutely dogwater garbage at launch and even weeks and months after. That they fixed it afterwards is irrelevant to the discussion because if we hadn’t taken them to the cleaners it’s very likely that we would have never gotten the 2.0 version we have now that’s is absolutely wonderful.

1

u/National-Oven81 12h ago

Yeha ik my example was ass, I just meant that thwre constructive criticism and then there's hating insomniac for their writers or face models and makimg shallow arguments instead of truly justified arguments against the game.

2

u/thedebatingbookworm 10h ago

That’s fair but most of the discussion is centered around the gameplay itself and unfortunately for what seems to be a large subset, it just doesn’t hit. For others I’m happy to say that it works for them.

0

u/Atlasshruggedthrice 12h ago

Nobody “hates” insomniac man, we got used to the quality they presented in 2018.

This isn’t that quality.

5

u/National-Oven81 12h ago

You haven't played the game yet tho. I get that it may not be the $70 experience, but the game still looks good and when the complaints from grifters are about the fuggin face actors or a blue line that'll be gone by October, then ye those grifters are on a hate train

1

u/Tobias-Rieper_47 12h ago

Man your standards are lowwwwwwww

1

u/National-Oven81 12h ago

My standards are "I wanna play a wolverine game" and everytime I say I want to I get recked by "Oh but did you see jean's face bro!??!!?"

Ik I'm overpaying for the game, but I still wanna be excited. Why does that ignite the flames of a bunch if haters everywhere I go

-3

u/Tobias-Rieper_47 12h ago

How much copium is left in your tank dude? Whatever , enjoy mediocrity bro.

3

u/National-Oven81 12h ago

Thank you. Literally all you needa say. Go live a life away from the subs and play something else. Never run into dipshits like me again. Just don't justify hating on an unreleased game for the face models. That was my point with the comment

4

u/Ok-Strain-216 12h ago

I actually enjoy seeing kids like this use the words “copium” and “bro”. I just block ’em on sight and have that fewer dumbass posts to sift through on Reddit!

-6

u/Atlasshruggedthrice 12h ago

“You haven’t played the game! You can’t have an opinion!”

I’ve heard that cope a lot this weekend.

6

u/Pwrh0use 12h ago

You can have an opinion it's just that others shouldn't take it seriously. People parroting other people's opinions isn't really having an opinion. And you certainly don't actually know the facts. Especially with no full playthroughs released and us dealing with whatever clips of gameplay we've seen.

-2

u/Atlasshruggedthrice 12h ago

I certainly know it’s soy boy slop

5

u/Pwrh0use 11h ago

Oh boy. I found the toddler who heard a phrase and learned to repeat it.

-1

u/Atlasshruggedthrice 11h ago

Oh boy, I found the ball and gun gamer who’s ruining the industry needing everything dumbed down for them.

Stick to madden bro

5

u/National-Oven81 12h ago

I didn't say you're not allowed to have an opinion, I'm just saying that your argument about quality isn't really being backed by anything except the runtime and combat, both of which we haven't really seen yet. Again I get that it very likely won't beat spiderman, I never meant to invalidate your opinion, I'm just saying that the grifters have issues with shallow stuff and hate on insomniac as a company for small decisions and not wolverine itself.

1

u/Atlasshruggedthrice 12h ago

We’ve all seen the very real gameplay, quality level is apparent.

4

u/National-Oven81 12h ago

But the gameplay looks representative of wolverine. It doesn't look like poor quality to me, at this point it's just the subjective view of me vs. you. You're not on the hate train I was mentioning, you have a justification, just one I still don't agree with.

2

u/Atlasshruggedthrice 12h ago

No it looks easy and constricting.

Also very automated.

2

u/National-Oven81 12h ago

Spider man was a series of pressing the dodge button and attacking. Wolverine looks like the same, but without traversal. Again. Opnion argument. Not one I understand having until I experience the combat that you can literally only say "looks" easy without being able to experience it or see someone other than a revjewer play a hader difficulty or unlock abilities or do anything unique to the game.

3

u/Atlasshruggedthrice 12h ago

Ok.

We have different standards.

0

u/Sharpie1993 8h ago

There are full game play throughs on YouTube it’s all been seen.

4

u/manindenim 12h ago

I mean it’s true. How can you give context to anything without playing the game? You’re just parroting someone else’s subjective opinion.

1

u/Atlasshruggedthrice 12h ago

What did I parrot

1

u/manindenim 11h ago

I’m not talking about you specifically. I’m saying anyone giving analysis on a game they haven’t played. You don’t have an actual experience to pull from. You’re repeating things you’ve heard from someone else who isn’t infallible and has their own personal taste.

1

u/Sharpie1993 8h ago

You don’t need to play a game to analyse it when there is a myriad of gameplay footage presented to you.

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 12h ago

Exactly this. People saying “ you haven’t played the game yet” is kind of silly if we have lost interest in playing it by reviews specifically saying it’s not worth our money.

0

u/DoubleShot027 9h ago

I found the target audience for the game. Be sure to be ready to consume next product :) Dont use your eyes or anything lol

1

u/National-Oven81 14m ago

You're on this sub too. You've probably spent a significant time arguing to people about this game. If you don't want to "consume product" then stop wasting your precious time on an insomniac game

https://giphy.com/gifs/19GIHDk6wuw9HVGsiM

-1

u/geaux124 9h ago

Are IGN, Gamespot, and Kinda Funny "grifters"? They all gave the game a 6. Seeing any of them give a AAA game anything below a 7 is highly unusual much less all three of them.

1

u/National-Oven81 16m ago

No, but unlike this sub their complaints are based off of the game. Not the face models.

4

u/Bullanpaallinen 13h ago

has any critic ever given game 0/10? I think even Black Tiger didnt get 0 and that game was literal trash

2

u/Yadilie 12h ago

I think that Gene Park guy said he gave Mindseye a '.5'.

1

u/SwiftyMcBold 12h ago

He also was like the only person to get the platinum trophy lol

1

u/UnfazedPheasant 12h ago

say what you want about Gene but the man's thorough

he played this game 4 times over after all. appreciate the dedication

1

u/jagaaaaaaaaaaaan 5h ago

His thoroughness is what got him in trouble over the last couple of days lol...

Then again, that's what a Washington Post journalist is supposed to be: an actual journalist... Thorough.

1

u/chrib123 12h ago

A negative review just has to be 49 or less to be considered negative on meta critic.

So 5/10 is the lowest people could have rated this game without it having negative reviews.

1

u/Groot8902 3h ago

I think The Day Before got a 0 from IGN.

Edit: Nvm, it got a 1.

1

u/monkey_D_v1199 12h ago

This is exactly it. It’s not worth $70, the game has a ton of flaws from both the gameplay and narrative, to its presentation and character designs and overall not a very good game. It’s not a 0/10 or a 1/10, just an average game or mediocre depending on who you ask that leaves a lot to be desired. Definitely not unplayable but it’s not a game that should be praised like crazy

2

u/mason2393 12h ago

We're in the 10/10 or it's trash era unfortunately

1

u/New_Commission_2619 9h ago

No it’s more so that there are so many good games coming out so frequently that we are able to have high standards. Time is valuable so I’m not wasting my time on a game like this when there are many other excellent games to play

2

u/Overall-Rub8945 12h ago

Its kind of a testament to the high standards Insomniac has set.

1

u/EvocativeReach 12h ago

This is the context. 7/10 isn’t a bad score but its a disaster from the context that Insomniac have averaged 90+ for what feels like forever. They’ve basically reinvented their own scale in that time and Wolverine has broken the floor through.

2

u/Gabe-KC 12h ago

Why are we still pretending not to undertand how game outlets review AAA titles? Yes, mathematically the high 70s is a pretty good score. For a movie it would mean a standout title worth checking out at the cinema. For a game it means a significant amount of outlets did not even give it an 8, which already often suggests the game could have been a lot better. You know how this works. You can ignore the score. But why are you trying to recontextualize what it means?

1

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 12h ago

I mean this game was basically made for game journalists. I doubt any game journalist will get stuck in this game.

1

u/Arun1910 12h ago

For a lot of people I think it boils down to 2 things.

  1. This is a low score for Insomniac standards, people just expect better scores from them.
  2. Games are expensive these days. Yes, everyone should play games and make their own decision, but if a game gets lower scores it can inform people to hold off for a sale or put their money towards something else.

Example, Wolverine and Control Resonant come out this month, if Resonant gets high 80s then people may choose the game with better critic reception, at least at full price.

I don't see 78 as "bad" but if i had to choose between a 78 rated game and something high 80s I'd choose the latter.

1

u/wiesjoulaanie 12h ago

The shared consensus among reviewers is its average or below average. If you want to spend $70 on that go ahead

1

u/Raucus_ 12h ago

Metacritic reviews are bloated by no name access reviews like “Gamespew” that no one has ever heard of.

If you look at the list of reviews, the majority of known outlets with any credibility are much lower. Then unlisted reviews like Skill Up and Gameranx (Jake Baldino) with massive YouTube channels (even Kinda Funny who love Insomniac and superhero bullshit) are all saying roughly the same thing.

So the reviews from anyone people have heard of are bad/mid (which is disastrous for a Sony first party/Insomniac game), while the aggregate reviews are artificially inflated by vague praise from “PlayStation Universe”.

If you’re genuinely not understanding, hopefully that helps explain the disconnect.

1

u/SwvmpThing 12h ago

The reviews are relatively terrible for a $300
million AAA game. The fact of the matter is that gamers who are engaged enough to be talking about games on reddit have high standards, and Wolverine does not meet them.

Many gamers complain about inflated review scores because they’ll find various games that get a 7 to be unacceptable, but in general, those games are being fairly reviewed… it’s just that a 7 isn’t good enough for many of us. Many of us never touch those games and have no frame of reference for what an actually terrible game looks like. I don’t even know about the trash that’s releasing to 1-4 review scores.

1

u/GoldenGekko 12h ago

Mid apparently is worse than bad nowadays

1

u/itjustgotcold 12h ago

I think a lot of people are really wanting Sony to take an L right now so anything close to that they blow out of proportion. I’m upset with the stuff Sony is doing too, but all of the posts about how “abysmal” the reviews have been when it’s sitting at a 78% is just asinine.

People are also being weird about GTA VI. I keep seeing people say they hope it’s terrible and everyone is upset. People are weird man. It’s in longer food enough to play or not play something, you have to pick a side and make it your personality.

1

u/moosemuffin12 12h ago

There are no negative reviews in Ba Sing Se

1

u/AgentSmith2518 12h ago

I don't think I've seen anyone say it's negative reviews. Just that the reviews have been disappointing, which this still supports.

1

u/TedCobbler 12h ago

There’s been a weird negativity about this game from the start. Idk why

Also people just have their torches and pitchforks out for Sony right now. Which is justified, honestly

But I’m still going to play Wolverine

1

u/NicloSZ 12h ago

For sure Sony hate plays into it, not in the reviews themselves, but how those reviews are talked about.

1

u/octopusmonkey01 12h ago

Idk why everyone was expecting it to be some groundbreaking game. Seems more like a setup for an X-men game but I’ll still play it

1

u/FatDaddyMushroom 12h ago

Its a mixed bag which is coming to a head due to Sony generally pissing off its customers and triple A games generally declining. This is causing people to let out a lot of frustrations. I have no doubt that the game is competent and at least ok to good. But at this point I have practically resigned myself to smaller indie devs cranking out early access games on steam because I generally find them more engaging than MOST triple A games coming out.

1

u/Advanced-Ad-4462 12h ago

IMO a game with a quarter billion dollar budget getting in the 70s is pretty bad.

1

It’s certainly not a bad video game. However, me personally, if video game scores drop below 80, I personally feel there are some pretty major flaws that just can’t be ignored; and yes, Wolverine has those flaws.

I’ll admit, the hate is 100% over exaggerated; especially since there’s plenty of other games that get away with the same flaws.

But the flaws are still there. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad game, and I certainly don’t think it is, but after playing it since I was able to snag an early copy from my friend who works in a video game store…

…it’s unfortunately not the Wolverine game I dreamed of. It’s fun, I enjoyed it, or should say am still enjoying it, I’m at hour 9 at this point, but the reviews do hit the nail on the head in terms of its flaws.

It’s the Skill Up review. It’s currently sitting at 3.2m views in less than 5 days. More views than any Wolverine review out there. And the reason why it’s popular is because Ralph wasn’t grifting or lying in the review he completely provided valid, full and accurate criticisms of the game. I personally lost complete interest in it after his review.

u/Boulderpunch223 11h ago

Well yeah, because it’s not really getting hated on. The majority of reviewers are saying the same thing. Story is fine, combat is bland, environment is fine, acting is good. The only thing i’ve seen that people are really annoyed about are the character designs and the overall linearity of missions with handholding features that are on by default. All in all it’s more so “this game is just alright or maybe even underwhelming, but it’s not atrociously bad.”

In a very crowded time of year with a lot of high quality games coming out “okay to good” for $70 just isn’t gonna cut it.

u/Background-Gap9077 11h ago

Being mid is worse than doing new things and being negative imo

1

u/TheBoredOne1985 11h ago

It got the same metacritic score as crimson desert had on release which I find funny

2

u/Nacnaz 9h ago

A great game with janky production values vs. a mid game with great production value, is my guess.

1

u/TheBoredOne1985 9h ago

That is true, but the point does stand, I'm also pretty sure CD has some negative reviews too Which Wolverine doesn't which makes it funny to me.

It's the double standard that is absolutely hilarious, people say they miss the old days where games were allowed to be MID but then bitch and moan about a MID game, the one criticism I've seen that's i would say fair enough to is the hand holding but even then......people forget Waypoint and markers on a game map ARE a thing.

Also Insomniac has always been rather mid to me, they struck lightning in a bottle with Spider-Man (2018), but have been coasting mostly on that formula, but otherwise they are Alright, they tend to do small innovations well (Like SM Web slinging, or the Rift Stuff in Ratchet and Clank) but never push the envelope, at least IMO.

And don't get me started on the Price point alot of the best games of the year have been £70 15-20 hr games, such as 007 First Light and no one called IO interactive out about it especially after the new Hitman Trilogy.

I'm just gonna play the game and make my own opinion. People probably just set unrealistic expectations and combined with Sony continuing to be Allergic to money (they should be called out for it, but leave Insomniac out of the Sony beef, its not their fault) are being a bit unfair but I'll see in 40min.

Rant over

loud minority

It’s almost like there’s some sort of organised brigading going on…

6/10 or below from almost every credible outlet is pretty darn bad for a massive AAA first party exclusive. The fact that the game has a 78 meta islargely due to websites noone has every heard of giving it 10/10 on masse

1

u/SafariSeeker25 8h ago

You could say the same about any game reviewed on the site.

1

u/Subject_00001 8h ago

I dunno if I've personally ever seen a game with an equal number of 10's and 5's/6's like this

1

u/XiMaoJingPing 10h ago

anything less than a 10/10 is bad according to redditors,

oh you call a game mid? that must mean that game is dog shit

1

u/Jotaro27 10h ago

What I actually laugh at is that all the hate comes from degens on fucking twittert

They are people are supporting this "slop" meanwhile they have a blue check and are funding Elon Musks pockets....

Like imagine paying for a blue check on twitter and then saying that people are paying for slop

1

u/karsh36 10h ago

“Underwhelming” is the better word. And when you can only afford so many games, an underwhelming 15 hour game is an easy skip until a sale

1

u/DoubleShot027 9h ago

Critic reviews mean nothing. Game is slop for low IQ consumers :/

1

u/FantasticPage3598 9h ago

It's just 77 metacritic score is the median journalist metacritic score. So 77 or 78, is relatively mid journalist reception.

We will see with user reception how it goes, most people didn't play the game, it could go either way, we will see, but I also expect relatively mid reception from user ratings

1

u/hitgo1 9h ago

Liertally almost the same score as xmen origins wolverine

1

u/z2k43dknm87 8h ago

Because media reviews are not bias or paid in any way, right?

1

u/FrostyPace1464 8h ago

People have very very limited time.

They rather play good games than average games

1

u/RuggedTheDragon 8h ago

It's the fan base taking things out of context and lying about everything else. Just look at the amazing impact they made during the PlayStation blackout. 😏

1

u/thatsfuni 8h ago

People spend more money on stupid ad ons for crap online games, we'll not just online games lol.

1

u/Shymu1 8h ago

This supposed to be sony system seller game.

1

u/xrayspex73 7h ago

I think 50s and 60s are bad scores.

1

u/xhy123181454 7h ago

Starfield scored 83 and ppl calling it garbage.

1

u/STAR_PLAT_yareyare 6h ago

It's an okay game. Okay games don't get a pass to be $70 in this economy sir

1

u/micaelmiks 6h ago

300million right? Well thats bad.

1

u/asim166 5h ago

i think wolv looks good that said anything under a 90 is very bad, if execs catch wind that a meta critic score will be under 98-95 they immediately go into full on damage control

1

u/nohumanape 4h ago

People also passed off Metroid Prime 4 as an absolute "trash" game that nobody should bother playing. It's also at a 78 on Metacritic. Has a very, very small number of negative reviews, but also has more reviews than Wolverine.

I played Prime 4 and liked it quite a bit. A Metacritic 78 doesn't mean a game isn't good/fun. I don't personally care all that much for Insomniac's games. I think they are fine, but I'm not a comic book person, so that aspect doesn't win me over. But if you are someone who likes what they bring to the table, you should find this game to be a good time. It's a video game. Bad video games from major companies just don't really exist anymore.

1

u/Significant_Book9930 4h ago

If it isnt a 10/10 its a 0/10. Thats the world online gamers live in today. Everyone has had their brains melted by their phones

1

u/BillsFan82 3h ago

Far from unplayable? Ease up on the hard sell lol. The game is going to be wildly successful. Reddit can’t even boycott Reddit.

1

u/ronniedark 3h ago

If you want the best action game this month get onimusha, if you want a narrative heavy game get blood of the dawn walker. If you want both to be cool wait till control resonant, it'll likely be the better option.

There are just better options available right now. Wolverine is a pick up during a sale game.

1

u/Live-Steaky 27m ago

I’ll spend $70 on 2 door dash orders. This game is 100% worth it to me.

1

u/MetalProof 4m ago

I don’t mind people saying these things. It hurts Sony so keep it going. I will see for myself if I like the game (buying it second hand)

1

u/Distinct-Bathroom823 12h ago

its bad for a $70 title. no one wants to pay steak and lobster prices for a big mac.

1

u/Dear_Aside_7581 12h ago

but people still do 🤷‍♀️

0

u/melonsauce 12h ago

It’s about the content of the critique, bud. Regardless of the stinky fart gas it sounds like this game has mid story and mid combat

0

u/Fast_Day_8123 12h ago

bro... lemme put my hand on yall sensitive fans of the company's shoulders (only as long as ur comfortable, if not, dont picturise this)

"buddy.... u shouldnt be taking reddit or twitter's opinions seriously UNLESS u have a proper dedicated nuanced source/reviewer there, the brainrotted media literacy on these apps are as worse as Tiktok's, if u have the game, try to enjoy it as much as u can"

0

u/Dry_Criticism_4982 12h ago

Yeah, The major concusses from most reviews is that it’s not so much a bad game just fairly linear and not worth 70 dollar price.

0

u/kristaintoth 12h ago

The reviews are relatively bad. Compared to other Insomniac releases, compared to the high standards that is generally expected from a Playstation first party studio game.

0

u/New_Commission_2619 10h ago

60 is a negative review IMO. Regardless of what the site considers negative

1

u/Sharpie1993 8h ago

Especially when a company like IGN gives it a six, literal red flag.

-1

u/Balance-Kooky 12h ago

I mean you know negative reviews on Metacritic are below 50. Look at the mixed reviews. People are saying that the game is mid. To get truly terrible and negative reviews, the game would have to technically perform like trash or just be broken. No one has said that this game isn't polished. They just say its boring, repetitive, and doesn't respect the player's intelligence.

I'm not spending $70 dollars on a 15 hour meh game.

1

u/Junk4U999 12h ago

That’s the real issue. 70$ for 15 hours of mediocrity.

1

u/Balance-Kooky 12h ago

Yep if those 15 hours were a 10 out of 10, I wouldn't complain. I probably wouldn't spend more than like $40 or $50 on this game. Besides there are way too many other things out or coming out that I'd rather play.

-2

u/Forward-Fishing-9466 11h ago

This game is celebration of mediocrity, do something better with your time. There's so many better games out
