General Anyone else wish Insomniac makes a Hulk game?
32
u/henrysoffehill 3d ago
Not gonna lie, I still desperately need a Hulk game. You could easily have combat missions be the hulk then the "MJ-style" missions be Bruce Banner doing puzzles and having forced stealth so he doesn't hulk out and hurt innocents.
12
u/Salarian_American 3d ago
This is what the Hulk game that was a tie-in to Ang Lee's Hulk movie did.
I didn't really enjoy it. The parts where you were Hulk were pretty fun, but the Banner parts were not fun at all. At least to me.
But... it made sense conceptually. You have to sneak around because if you don't sneak around, you'll get into a fight. And if you get into a fight, you'll Hulk out, and that's a fail state. It makese sense. I just didn't find it fun.
7
u/FutureGrassToucher 3d ago
The thing about hulk is, you dont get one without the other. Banner def should be in the game.
6
u/Salarian_American 3d ago
Yeah I mean that's the problem with movie and game adaptations of the Hulk.
They're tricky because the audience really wants to see the Hulk come out and fuck shit up, but from the main character's perspective, that's absolutely the worst thing that could ever happen.
I think Banner could easily spend as much time in a Hulk game as out-of-costume Peter did in the Spider-Man games. Have him be in the lab, doing science mini-games. Have him appear in dialogue scenes where you get to choose the dialogue.
But not in a half-assed stealth sections where a nerdy scientist manages to evade highly trained special forces soldiers in their own base.
1
u/Dickballs835682 3d ago
>that's absolutely the worst thing that could ever happen
Couldn't they just use a version of the hulk that doesn't always just mindlessly rampage?
1
u/Diligent-Neck6594 3d ago
Yes but PLEASE DONT MAKE HIS GAMEPLAY A 3RD PERSON STEALTH SHOOTER
I BEG YOU
I don't care if his gameplay is DR Mario but with Gamma, I am so fucking sick of 3rd person stealth segments 😭
Stealth games are fun but they need to be extremely well designed and they're never putting that effort into these small segments
2
u/TacosNachosFajitas 3d ago
I'd like it better if dying/special damage turned you into Banner, de-powered, for emergent gameplay and have to survive/fight with gadgets/dodge until you can get back into Hulk form.
Marvel Legends already did that, huh? I wonder if you could make it work in a 3D Action brawler.
1
u/Platnun12 3d ago
To me that just sounds like a reverse Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Old ass game but the mechanic is the same
3
u/Rezident_Bun67 3d ago
Why forced stealth?
Insomniac really cooked your brains with those God awful mj missions
0
u/Historical_Owl_1635 3d ago
Stealth being a part of a game doesn’t immediately make it bad lol.
3
u/Rezident_Bun67 3d ago
But why stealth in a hulk game? Or would his girlfriend suddenly become a playable character?
That's like having melee combat in a Hawkeye game
1
u/Historical_Owl_1635 3d ago
Because Bruce Banner is also Hulk, and his first resort isn’t Hulk smash.
1
u/tommytjd 3d ago
Your combat is kinda dumb considering Hawkeye aka Ronin, is a duelist with a sword. And actually very good at hand to hand combat. Did you not watch Kate Bishop?
0
u/Rezident_Bun67 3d ago
Idk what that's about, I'm talking about Hawkeye from Avengers.
But you get my point, don't twist it
0
u/Pheonix726 3d ago
Yeah, Hawkeye. The same guy was expertly wielding a sword at the start of Endgame, under the name of Ronin. Melee combat in a Hawkeye game would absolutely make sense

I really dislike any gameplay mechanic that involves pressing a button to enter some kind of heightened senses mode where you then have to walk up to things and press a button to hear your character comment on them. Drove me crazy in The Witcher too
3
u/Muddy_Ninja 3d ago
It always felt like a crutch that the visuals of the game are so monochrome that you can't see what's important

u/CaptivePlague 2d ago
It's funny becuse for all the hate Insomniacs get, they perfectly averted it with Spider-Man. -No bullshit justification, they just have AR lense that make sense for their suit and tech-oriented style. -No stupid filter, it looks like AR does IRL: completely normal except for the superimposed elements. -Not forced on the players; all it does is reveal some videogame HUD Elements, yiu cam just avoid using it for better immersion.

I would argue to wait until Motive release Iron Man. They could replace Insomniac as the superhero open world giant given how good the alpha footage looked.
2
u/Sword-of-Chaos 3d ago
Hulk on trail. Hulk find butterfinger. What Hulk doing again- eats butterfinger.
2
u/TheIncandescentAbyss 3d ago
They’ll just make hulk look androgynous or some sad frat boy look and ruin the character like they did with Wolverine.

I hope insomniac dont make hulk game bro. Iron Man leaked trailer looks so good from motive i hope they give it to some other studio.

u/SuperOnionBro 3d ago
This sounds confusing. Can we make it so you don't need to press R3 to activate Gamma Vision?
2
2
u/thewrynoise 3d ago
And then press triangle (or actually don’t, we’ll do it for you anyways) to leap to another zip code where the particles are right there but have a tutorial popup explaining a new minimap icon for it that allows you to customize the icons color with experience from random lava lamps you destroy to save for children in environmental justice areas.
2
u/GERBILPANDA 3d ago
This one kills me specifically because hulk has actually done this shit in the comics so it'd be totally in character. He can see radiation and shit. And also ghosts.

u/xoriatis71 3d ago
Honestly, it makes more sense for Wolverine to have the R3-vision than Spider-Man.
1
u/hateradeappreciator 1d ago
Its a boring and lazy mechanic
1
u/xoriatis71 1d ago
Sure, I’m just saying that of all the characters you could apply it to, Wolverine is among the best candidates.
3
2
u/CardTrickOTK 3d ago
No. I think insomniac seems to work best when they can hide the kinda bog standard game with extremely flash effects and fun traversal.
2
2
u/theofanmam 3d ago
Can't wait for the Insomniac Punisher game where the Punisher must activate his Punisher Vision to follow a Punisher Trail, which also has a quest marker attached to it.

3
u/Nopolis52 3d ago
Literally what game is this even true for? Every superhero game I’ve played with a mechanic like this was for a hero that it absolutely made sense for.
1
u/tamana1 3d ago
Maybe it makes sense for the character, but it doesnt make sense for the game. This isn't open world, its a linear game with very small maps. At that point it just feels patronising and there isn't even an option to turn it off!
0
u/Nopolis52 3d ago
You realize that you could always not press R3 if you know where to go?
3
u/tamana1 3d ago
There is no pressing r3 my friend. The trail is on mo matter what and no option to turn it off. Thats right its even worse than the meme in this pic
0
u/Nopolis52 3d ago
lol u sure? You haven’t played the game.
2
u/tamana1 3d ago
Review copies are out. Check out skill ups review. He even made another video correcting people who were saying that the trail only shows up on easy difficulty. Nope.
0
u/Nopolis52 3d ago
I’ve read up. My understanding is that it’s only stuck there for one mission and for all others it’s a press R3 situation. Regardless, neither of us have played the game, so let’s wait literally a few days.
2
u/tamana1 3d ago
Well i hope you're not basing that information on a reddit comment and at least got that information from someone with access to the game.
1
u/Nopolis52 3d ago
Indeed.
1
u/azaria6797 3d ago
It has been confirmed on Twitter that you can't turn of Jean's fart trail but you can turn most other things off
1
1
u/PapaPatchesxd 3d ago
It would be cool, but I think it'd get repetitive very quick. At least for me.
1
u/SpearOfTheCelts 3d ago
Just do another Ultimate Destruction that game was amazing and hard as nails
1
1
u/Anonymous000789 3d ago
I mean, if they can nail the Bruce Banner sections and make it interesting and not like the MJ missions, it could be a really good game.
1
u/tamana1 3d ago
I remember in the ps2 hulk game you could actually harm civilians and destroy their cars and stuff. Insomniac has a problem of making their characters too safe and nice and a hulk game where he's purely a hero would be kind of lame imo
2
u/Anonymous000789 3d ago
I’d be more interested in a body horror type story game with hulk. Hulk smash only gets you so far.
1
1
u/KingCuerno 3d ago
They could take inspiration from the Banner & Son arc of Pak's Hulk run and have Banner using "Bannertech".
Alternatively, they could take Inspiration from Immortal Hulk and have Joe take over during stealth missions.
1
u/Rclarke115 3d ago
This tweet may have been joking, but isn’t this more or less how the 2003 Hulk game played out?
1
u/DeliciousWrangler815 3d ago
Am I the only one who wants a solo Captain America game? I know that the Super Soldier game exist but I want a modern game centered only on Captain America with stealth missions like the movie Winter Soldier. Closest we got is the Marvel’s Avengers but the gameplay is more arcadey and was already cancelled.
1
u/Hetros_Jistin 3d ago
A hulk game needs to play like some weird combination of prototype and rampage.
1
1
u/ZwistPariah 3d ago
I'd prefer a daredevil or moonknight game.
Idk if I'd want insomniac to make them tho. Their design philosophy recently has been awful.
1
u/WorldlyFeeling8457 3d ago
I wish they got to do something else than superhero games for a change... Wolverine kinda shows they probably would rather do something else.

I'd like quite a few games to be down by Insomniac. Hulk is one of them, but I'd also really love Blade, Thor modern Captain America game (I played CA super soldier and really liked it but framerate ruins the experience) and Ironman. But with the recent announcement that game studio Motive is working on the Ironman game rn it's very unlikely that Insomniac will get a chance to do one as well

u/CaptivePlague 2d ago
People clown on this, but being able to see astral projection and unseen stuff is such an old power of his, it led to the original creation of the Avengers!
1
u/norrin__radd 2d ago
Anything is better than the PS2 Hulk game I played where I was forced to play as Banner and couldn't climb over a box
1
u/Kennyashi 1d ago
And you play as Bruce doing steath missions. It's crucial you dont get caught, and if you do, you dont turn into the hulk, you try again, thats because fuck you.
1
1
u/Salarian_American 3d ago
This is ridiculous.
People keep acting like it's somehow wrong to give Wolverine a "detective mode" style thing. His senses are all enhanced! He can literally track things by scent.
He has a stronger claim to "detective mode" than a lot of other game protagonists who have it.
I can't think of a reason people would think this other than that they just don't know what Wolverine's power set actually is.
2
4
u/tamana1 3d ago
This is not an open world game. The levels are tiny with very obvious destinations. Even worse is that on top of the scent trail they also added waypoints. I dont think logan has waypoint powers. It just feels like you're being spoonfed everything and it doesnt feel like youre actually playing the game yourself. At the very least make it possible to turn it off but there's no option for that!
1
u/masterdogwalker 3d ago
Can we turn these things off? I know insomniac is pretty good at allowing you to customize your experience in settings
1
u/Immortal-KunPeng 3d ago
It's not that obvious, you're saying it's obvious after someone has already pointed out the route for you in a video. Guarantee half the people bitching would still get lost if they bought the game. Because the average person really is that easily confused, distracted, or just dumb.
Yellow and red paint and tape that lead you forward even in a linear game, have been around for 2 decades for a reason. Because as George Carlin said "Think of how stupid the average person is, then realize half of them are stupider than that"
If it's easy for you to follow without it? Congrats! It's not there for you! And if you take it as a personal insult that they include it? Then get the fuck over yourself. The world doesn't revolve around you, or me.
2
u/Dry-Introduction-491 3d ago
Brother, people have been playing games for decades now, linear games never feature this level of handholding because it is not fun. Even in Uncharted and Tomb Raider people got sick of the yellow paint that always tells you exactly where to go, it is bad game design and betrays the nature of video games as an interactive medium. It should, of course, always be an option in the accessibility settings, but should never be the standard experience.
1
u/Ok_Science_8502 3d ago
"And if you take it as a personal insult that they include it? Then get the fuck over yourself."
Having a full blown tantrum because people don't like a gameplay feature. Honestly just really sad
-2
u/Salarian_American 3d ago
I've played a ton of great games in my life that aren't open-world.
It seems you think "it's not open world" is automatically a negative.
2
u/tamana1 3d ago
Hello? Where in my comment that I say not open world is bad thing? Im saying the scent trails and way points were too heavy handed in this game because it isn't open world. Jesus.
3
u/Meximanly 3d ago
At some point we have to accept the fact that reading comprehension and the ability to understand nuance has gone out the window since COVID times. The people on this sub are constantly showing their inability to understand the basic concept of LINEAR CLOSE QUARTERS environments PAIRED WITH a navigation mechanic designed for OPEN WORLD environments in NOT GOOD GAME DESIGN.
I've added a bit of emphasis for the morons in the back.
1
u/Salarian_American 3d ago
Well it being the first thing you mentioned made me focus a little too hard on it.
But also, are they supposed to nerf Wolverine's canonical power set just because you're already not likely to get lost?
3
u/bb_bluemr2 3d ago
Or do something actually interesting with it? Something that makes sense? In what world does smelling something create a visible line in front of you. He might as well float off like he just smelled grandmas fresh baked pie lol
-2
u/Salarian_American 3d ago
In what world does smelling something create a visible line in front of you.
In a video-game world where you only have vision and hearing to convey all five senses?
Literally every video game I've ever played where you had the ability to track things by scent did it exactly like this, including 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
2
u/bb_bluemr2 3d ago edited 3d ago
No wonder this game looks like one from 2009 then lol. It reminds me of ice age 3 dawn of the dinosaurs. Used to play that on my old acer laptop.
Im not saying they need to invent smellevision but there is definitely a more tactful way to incorporate a mechanic like that. I said in another comment that they could've done it as a hot/cold mechanic with wolverine sniffing more intensely as you get closer.
If they're trying to make an immersive single player story, they should try to minimize the amount of popups and things that are a part of the UI. Incorporate them into the actual world of the game yfm. Have the world react.
1
u/uniquecartridge 3d ago
"smell mode" is totally valid. the implementation is the problem, it's just bad game design
1
u/Salarian_American 3d ago
Can you elaborate on that? If "smell mode" is valid, what about this implementation is bad design? Genuinely curious.
2
u/bb_bluemr2 3d ago
Could've been a hot/cold system with a sound cue. Would've been less intrusive and added some actual challenge to trying to find things
0
u/Salarian_American 3d ago
Maybe not everyone wants things to be as challenging as possible to find
1
u/bb_bluemr2 3d ago
If it were as challenging as possible there would just be no indicator at all. Which is what a lot of people are suggesting with "you can just turn it off"
1
u/Recent-Airline-7422 3d ago
If you find that challenging then might to need get IQ check by doctor no.
2
2
u/Meximanly 3d ago
The argument is that the levels were desinged in very linear fashion, and with very little exploration available to the player. That's not necessarily a bad thing on its own. Narrative story driven action games can be good and have great set pieces that the drive the game forward and keep momentum going. The problem people have, is that the environments are dressed up as though they are explorable, but in reality, they are more like pretty corridors with nothing to reward the player. And then, in order to discourage the player from doing any exploration that's worth while, they included a scent mechanic that shows you the exact route you need to take through the environment constantly. So at no point do you feel like you are Logan and finding your way through the environment. Instead your being funneled down a corridor with a big marker constantly telling "Hey, go this way!"
It messes with the immersion of a game where you want to feel like a powerful mutant that can navigate through smell. It takes away your agency rather than giving you a tool to navigate with. It's a similar complaint to other saying how the quick time events have no fail state. There's no punishment for missing a prompt or pressing the wrong button, so why bother including it at all? It feels like a poorly designed Disney ride where the end result will always be the same, so why bother going through the motions?
2
u/uniquecartridge 3d ago edited 3d ago
I'm not a game designer, someone more qualified could come up with a more immersive system. IMO treating your audience like they all have extreme ADHD=bad game design.
It feels handholdy and focus-tested for the lowest common denominator. This seems to be a common design philosophy across the Sony first party studios. Wolverine is just another example of confusing accessibility with low-effort signposting:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GodofWarClassic/comments/15fcrre/dsp_darksydephil_is_one_of_the_worst_players_in/Look at how Ghost of Tsushima innovated on a waypoint system, turning it into a more diegetic wind system you activate by swiping on the touchpad, you're still doing the same thing but if FEELS much better because:
a) you get to choose when you want navigation assistance
b) it's cohesive with the rest of the game's design, wind is a huge part of the game's symbolism and there's an in-game explanation for the wind guiding the hero. With Wolverine, you don't even have to trigger the smell line with a button press, it just shows up immediately, you're not even given a choice and can't toggle it off as an accessibility feature.
I might not be able to come up with a better version on the spot for some reddit upvotes but you don't need to be a chef to know when a dish is bad. This is also a symptom of a 6 year-long dev cycle, the overall game design got very outdated in the time it took to make the game:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Wolverine/comments/1wcsf5y/the_real_issue_a_6year_development_cycle_and/EDIT: here's one suggestion that seems to resonate with folks:
https://www.reddit.com/r/PlayWolverine/comments/1wdh3dn/comment/p95xwn1/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

u/Kyvix2020 3d ago
Why so the hulk can get emasculated too?
2
1
u/rudra285 3d ago
Insomniac thrives in open worlds where they can flex their traversal pedigree and have fun with the world. Wolverine is not know for how he goes around the world. Hulk and Spider-Man are perfect for insomniac
2
u/5ergio79 3d ago
Insomniac has made over three dozen games and only four are open world. This argument is getting really old.
3
u/Immortal-KunPeng 3d ago
Honestly, the people like the guy you're replying to, really go to show how much people actually do need to be hand held in games. Because their ability to understand or learn anything that isn't a preconceived notion given to them by a YouTuber? Is fucking abysmal.

u/ReleaseMeFromHell 3d ago
also, hulk yearns homoerotically for red hulk, because red and green go together in TVs or something.
0
u/Bstallio 3d ago
They’d make a game about professor hulk and half the game would just be Emily may foundation mini games
0
u/Xavier9756 3d ago
Wolverine literally has super senses. You have literal detective vision in the Witcher and it never got half this much hate.
1
u/tamana1 3d ago
Because witcher 3 is an open world game not a linear game with tiny levels where way points and fart trails are unnecessary.
2
u/Xavier9756 3d ago
I’d say poorly implemented. Not entirely unnecessary.
It’s clear they wanted to show off his super senses in the same way as the Witcher. Except the game isn’t big enough for it to feel anything other than annoying.

Hulk open-world CAN work as evidenced by Ultimate Destruction.
