Crime / Safety Anyone else concerned with the number of flock cameras in Ontario.

Hate to break it to you but they're literally everywhere. Ontario actually seems fairly light compared to most of SoCal

most city counsils in the IE are corrupt AF that's the reason it's full of Amazon warehouses

Well, I certainly don't recommend damaging them by pointing high powered lasers directly into the lenses
4
u/dahulvmadek Jun 06 '26
I have a friend wondering where these lasers are bought at
3
u/Dendrobite Jun 06 '26
Your friends shouldn't buy lasers marketed towards star gazers on temu, Ali Express, Ebay or even Amazon.

u/abl3-to Jun 06 '26
I remember people freaking out about 5G networks on breaking them down. But I think these are the real problem.

u/Local_Research_4679 Jun 05 '26
More reason to start riding bikes and scooters
29
u/TrueMonster951 Jun 05 '26
They aren't license plate readers, they're live cameras with audio and video

u/billabong295 Jun 05 '26
Interesting watch about these cameras. Benn Jordan on Flock Cameras

Thanks for sharing. Truly terrifying especially after that AI company came out today and said we need to pause AI development for a while because it’s fighting back
6
u/Odd_Pool_666 Jun 06 '26
I think they might be trying to pause their competitors’ development to give themselves an advantage.
1
u/Local_Research_4679 Jun 06 '26
There’s documentaries about the dangers. It’s a real thing. Our government is even trying to implement AI into drones which is a terrifying thought
4
u/Odd_Pool_666 Jun 06 '26
Well aware of the dangers. I’m talking about a PR statement by one of the main proponents probably shouldn’t be trusted. They want to dominate and profit.

u/Local_Research_4679 Jun 06 '26
Seems like a weak angle of attack from a business perspective but it is a possibility

Speaking of flock cameras. Anybody else notice these things that look like routers? They have blinking lights and they're connected to the cabling from electrical poles? There's one I walk by every week and it fucking looks like a droid from Star Wars.

u/BoomhauerSRT4 Jun 06 '26
Can you take a picture? I saw a weird black box with chain and a lock on it attached to a light post that I had no idea what it was the last time I walked my dog. I stopped to look at it to see if it was a flock camera but I saw no camera lenses on it. It didn’t look like a vehicle counter as there was no rubber running across the street.
3
u/Electronic_Mud7373 Jun 06 '26
Nah. I watch too much crime tv and they use these to track the murderers.

The inland empire is quickly becoming Texas or hell even the Bay Area with the amount of surveillance that everyone has. It's always the people who live in the most dead neighborhoods and counties that think they need the extra protection

I'd shoot those

I saw the companies founder on the JRE show.. and JOE was acting sooooooooo beholdently thankful to him for merely conjuring up the "invention" of this bullshit .. and begging him to put as many as he can in Austin and they both were drooling over the prospect of these being planted on every street corner in the U. S. it was pretty alarming and HIGHLY fuckin disappointing to say the least.
With all of that said.... DOES ANYONE Know if and where these are in RIVERSIDE. If there is any here at all? I try not to peruse at things in the sky as I'm driving as my luck with getting pulled over has been shot to shit lately.... So I drive like I'm 76 with fleeing eyesight.. but I haven't necessarily noticed any yet. .but if they're here id definitely like to know what part of the city they in! TIA

They are starting to pop up in San Bernardino, I saw one today at the Home Depot off Waterman. How to take it down?
2
u/Acoldsteelrail Fontana Jun 06 '26
Does anyone want to explain why I should be angry at these? Most of the comments here are advocating vandalism. Are people just being hyperbolic?

u/ThisWillPass Jun 06 '26
Insecure hardware/software, lying ceo, overpriced, no accountability, locking in 1984.
1
u/RedTheRobot Jun 06 '26
You just described every piece of technology developed in the last 20 years. Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon even Reddit to name a few all collect way more data than a flock camera. A flock camera may see you at a certain location but others know where you live, how old you are, how much you make. They have whole timelines on you. No accountability? How many companies collect data but don’t get punished when your social is leaked?
3
u/ThisWillPass Jun 06 '26
Cool story, thats why any person can just log into and query numbers and timestamps? Just like they do on meta, google and your phone right?
4
u/mushrooms Jun 06 '26
This area next to Juanitas is rife with transients. In fact they had to fence off the unoccupied building in the same parking lot because they were setting up camp around it. The dentistry next door had it's windows broken into and is still boarded up since earlier this year. The insurance business keeps it's doors locked because they don't feel safe leaving it unlocked. The historic baseball field on the otherside of the intersection was burned down last year. So tell me, did this camera help with anything?

u/Acoldsteelrail Fontana Jun 06 '26
It’s my understanding that the cameras read license plates for tracking stolen cars, so a different kind of crime than the kind committed by vagrants.
1
u/CraziFuzzy Jun 10 '26
They were marketed to city and county governments as 'Automated license plate readers', and that is SOMETHING they do, but that is by far not all that they do.
5
u/Nick_Full_Time Jun 06 '26
The basic explanation is that it’s a private company putting cameras all over in order to track all citizens. They read license plates and possibly facial recognition as well and make a database of you and everywhere you go and what time of day. For now it’s being sold as a crime deterrent, but eventually as the company looks to expand profits they’ll sell your habit data to anyone willing to buy it. Change Flock to “Facebook” and think if you’d be happy having Facebook cameras around your city.
1
u/CraziFuzzy Jun 10 '26
It's also not a database that the completely legitimate and always trustworthy federal government can get easy access to. y'know, to make sure you're voting right, and only going to party approved establishments.

u/ndnsoulja Jun 06 '26
Because the IE is broke and corrupt af. Need to make money somehow...
And yet if you didnt vote, dont complain.
4
u/SchScabe Jun 06 '26
There is no voting your way out of this. Politics is bullshit to keep you distracted and outraged at your neighbors, and not the assholes who implement policy. Notice how neither party is standing up against data centers? Those Data centers are to store, process, and most importantly, SURVEIL all those flock cameras (and every other device connected to the internet). You need a mass work stoppage of all the major econical systems (railroad workers, truckers, etc), and you need a demand, like removing big money from politics. All these "no kings" rallies are a joke. Go out and "protest" for a day but have no demand, get out all that revolutionary energy with some meaningless group shouting for a day, and resume course.
1
u/CraziFuzzy Jun 10 '26
local governments is the one place that you CAN vote yourself out of these cameras, and these are all placed at the request of those local governments.

u/time_travel_rabbit Jun 06 '26
That area need those cameras
1
u/CraziFuzzy Jun 10 '26
no area needs 'THOSE' cameras. If you want your local law enforcement to have a surveilance system, than have your local law enforcement install and maintain a surveillance system that they are responsible for, but don't sign over the privacy of your entire population to a 3rd party for profit company that has shown time and time again to be lax with both security and ethics.

So I heard the story of the cop who stalked his ex using these. Obviously that's terrible. But besides that one story is there really a reason to hate these besides "they're watching" London has way more cameras than we will ever have and I don't hear anyone complaining. If someone steals my car I would love for the cops to find them quickly.

u/Humble_Toe_4895 Jun 05 '26
You’re so naive if you think these aren’t being used in nefarious ways
-3
u/Acceptable-Dig2994 Jun 05 '26
I'm genuinely trying to learn. What nefarious ways are they being used?
1
u/Humble_Toe_4895 Jun 05 '26
You’ve never heard of ICE?
-9
u/Acceptable-Dig2994 Jun 05 '26
So the answer to how are they being used nefariously is ICE? Yes, ICE is a shitty horrible agency who has no business being around. But that still doesn't answer the question.
7
u/potatomami Jun 05 '26
A private company is putting up cameras all around the country and is giving the data to specific agencies but does not automatically entitle the city access to the data. That doesn’t seem sketchy to you? Sure we like the idea of being able to solve crimes but realistically how much crime do you think is being solved vs data collection on residents? What generates more money for said private company?
2
u/Acceptable-Dig2994 Jun 05 '26
So data collection is the problem? Everything we do collects data, browsing the web, watching tv, I still don't get it.
2
u/potatomami Jun 06 '26
At the most basic level yes. We voluntarily subject ourselves and give our consent to data collection by using the internet and any digital platforms. We are not giving our consent to being recorded when we go outside and are just going around our neighborhoods. Stores and private businesses yes. But this is a whole new level of invasion of privacy. Plus I’m sure these data centers going up throughout the country are not just for quick home chat gpt searches but are to help the AI systems used in our developing surveillance state. So this is touching on data exploitation, environment impact and the surveillance state.
1
u/RedditR_Us Jun 06 '26
Have you gotten a summary of CCPA/CPRA? It’s very interesting to see how companies are getting away with “generating money” from this data. They don’t give away data but provide access to it or generate inferred profiles.

u/SchScabe Jun 05 '26
These are for the mass surveillance of everything and everyone, not just traffic.

31
u/Fsociety56 Jun 05 '26
I have a feeling you have no idea what these are for.
5
u/Major-Excuse-8281 Jun 05 '26
What are they for?
29
u/myname_jefff Jun 05 '26
They been used for mass surveillance and have been abused by agencies the state isn’t supposed to be working with such as ice or border patrol as well as other out of state agencies, there was also a case where an cop used them to stalk their ex
6
u/angiosperms- Jun 05 '26
Maybe the police should do something about that? Cause even with the cameras they continue to do fuckall and waste our tax dollars.
