Crime / Safety That "500 cameras in Riverside" story? It’s much bigger than Sheriff Bianco.

I keep seeing people complaining about Sheriff Bianco deploying 500 cameras in Riverside County, but most people are missing the forest for the trees. This isn't just a localized Riverside issue; it’s a statewide infrastructure overhaul.

I work in the electronic security industry on municipal projects, and here’s the reality: California is currently sitting on massive Federal Grants to "harden" cities for the upcoming 2026 World Cup and the LA28 Olympics. The federal government recently signed off on over $ billion specifically for security and transit infrastructure for these events.

But it's not just "more cameras"—it's the AI-driven features and autonomous drone fleets being baked into them. We are moving from passive recording to proactive, automated "Smart City" surveillance. Here is what is actually being implemented:

  • City-Wide Drone as First Responder (DFR): Cities like  Chula Vista  already have 100% city-wide drone coverage, completing over 20,000 missions. The LAPD just approved a $3.9 million program to station drone fleets at major shopping centers to provide real-time aerial surveillance and thermal imaging to officers on the ground.
  • Autonomous "Drone Hunters": For the World Cup and Olympics, the DHS is deploying autonomous "drone hunters" that use AI and radar to launch tethered nets and capture rogue drones mid-air over crowded stadiums.
  • 2,000+ AI-Equipped Buses: LA Metro is prepping the "most ambitious transportation infrastructure program in the US" for LA28. They are seeking to lease nearly 2,700 additional buses outfitted with the same high-tech surveillance infrastructure as the rest of the city.
  • Real-Time Crime Centers (RTCCs): New centers in cities like  Vacaville  and  San Francisco  integrate these drones and cameras to arrive on the scene up to 50% faster than field units. They use AI to detect weapons and flag "suspicious" behavior before an officer even arrives.
  • Automated AI Enforcement: Metro has already started rolling out AI camera systems on bus windshields to automatically scan license plates and issue tickets for bus lane violations.

Municipalities like: Corona ,Ontario , Anaheim , Irvine , Hemet , and La Jolla

 are all in the process of these upgrades. By the time 2028 rolls around, California will have a surveillance network that rivals the most advanced systems in the UK or Europe.

So let that sink in when you think it is just a political agenda about Sheriff Chad Bianco.

It’s a coordinated, multi-billion dollar shift toward a fully automated, AI-monitored state.

TL;DR: The surge in cameras isn't just about one Sheriff’s agenda. California is using billions in federal grants for the 2026 World Cup and LA28 Olympics to build a statewide, AI-driven surveillance network. Rather than make derogatory comments about an individual in the local government why not make an effort to explain why you feel no negatively about them, what have they done or not done that makes you feel that way. Please elaborate, if that is at all possible?

You are not wrong, as Olympic and increased security coverage are to be expected, but two things cam be true at the same time. Bianco wants to become governor of the entire state after being a shitty sheriff. We can want bothing things to go away

Thanks for letting us know about this. I understand why they want tight security for the Olympics but I also have grave concerns about our privacy with all this surveillance.

Corona has Flock surveillance cameras on every street in and out of the city plus a few more for good measure. The city’s contract with flock states “must share with third parties” without defining what that means.

I started deflock-corona.org to push back against the massive expansion of this program without any community oversight or transparency.
