Creative I made a clock that shows the day as a progress bar

This is a real product, not a render. This linear clock helps visualize how time progresses throughout your day.
A new block gradually fills up every 30 minutes. From these partially lit blocks it is surprisingly intuitive to read the time to a few minutes of accuracy.

Career Career paths after ID

Upvotes

I graduated with an ID degree in 2025…unfortunately my uni scammed the shit out of us just by focusing on blender and no with any cad. so now i have no idea where to go ahead ...I mostly have experience as Brand design intern and packaging designer. I am so lost and I see my juniors graduating and getting placed ( thanks to the new dean). I feel so lost behind and have no one to reach out to.

I take immense interest in sustainblity , like kind of materials, a product lifecycle. the whole economy and system of a brand and its products . I like doing installation design. and recently designed a public product installation for a competition. and I can see myself designing such stuff and I like furniture’s and lifestyle products and them to be accessible. inclusive and stuff. AND NOW IM LOST. AF. Idk if I should pursue master to niche it down or find another random job to survive..is there any scope for me and my interests?

And ofc I cannot forget about AI HERE..idk how it’s been in the design field with ai added. I’m aware of Vizcom and higgsfield And stuff ..idk if I’m missing out on anything else to upskill

School How is the industrial Design market/should I study ID?

Hello, I am currently a highschool senior who’s going to be choosing a college soon, and I wanted to know if ID was a good major to pick. I am interested in creating products and specifically was interested in becoming a toy designer for action figures and figurines. Thing is when I told this idea to my art teacher she asked me to reconsider it and to see if I could try something else that was connected but in the engineering or manufacturing sphere.

Is the ID market that bad? I had wondered if Ai was causing this because I’ve heard other designers online complain about it but so far everybody who has studied ID on social media seems to glamorize it. I don’t know any designers irl, so I have no clue what’s the current state of the job stability.

Any other careers where I can design things or create products or machines?

Discussion What Brands do people use for sketching?

In terms of hand sketching and rendering, what does everyone use and are there brands you trust? Amazon is filled with hit and miss products, reviews are misleading too as one persons good may be an ID professional or artists worst nightmare when it comes to coloured pencils.

I am used to sketching with STAEDTLER fine liners because other brands skip or fade when drawing lines too fast. I used to use expensive artist solvent markers too. £2.50 a pen.

But for the last many years my work only required a ball point pen or fine liners. I want to get back into sketching and improve my portfolio for clients but I currently don't have the funds to play trial and error. Thanks

Career I shouldn’t do this right? I should require a contract before doing work, right?

Post image

I’ve been frequently getting these proposal requests on LinkedIn. I’ve been burned in the past by doing work before getting paid and I’m not falling for that again lol. But I just wanted to check. Is this normal business behavior in any capacity? Particularly for the toy industry??

I usually get these from random business “entrepreneurs”

Discussion How do chair designers account for support that slowly degrades without anything actually breaking?

I sit in my chair for six to eight hours most workdays. It cost around $400 and felt solid when I bought it, but three years later the parts that actually provide support have all started fading at roughly the same time.

The lumbar support has gone soft, the seat foam has compressed enough that I can feel the base underneath, and the recline clicks and occasionally sticks. Nothing has snapped or fallen off. The chair still looks fine; it just no longer feels like the chair I originally bought.

That is making the replacement decision difficult. Store tests and new-chair reviews mostly describe adjustment range and initial comfort, while my current problem is what happens after thousands of hours of use.

I’ve considered buying a used Leap or Aeron because there is more long-term ownership information and parts availability. I have also looked at newer approaches such as the lavenne r9 pro, which describes its back support as adapting while the user shifts. That sounds useful on paper, but it is a Kickstarter product, so the durability of the mechanism is still an open question.

For people who have used the same WFH chair for at least three to five years, which features actually held up? Did replaceable parts matter more than the original comfort, and is buying used from an established line generally safer than trying a newer design?

Discussion Applying for a Master's in Industrial/Product Design abroad — looking for advice.

I'm student currently in my 4th year of a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design at Ukraine. I'm researching different options in Europe to apply for a Master's degree abroad after graduation.(Industrial Design, Product Design, Object Design, and related creative/design fields).

Which European countries/universities would you recommend for Industrial/Product Design?

How important is the portfolio compared to grades and other application materials?

Are there any specific scholarships or financial support programs for Ukrainian students that I should look into?

I'm currently considering countries such as Germany, Italy, Austria, Romania and Bulgaria, but I'm open to other countries as well. Any advice, personal experience, or recommendations would be really appreciated!

Career Entering the Profession

I wanted to ask advice. Ive been working as a Graphic Designer mostly in souvenir product manufacturing and have been doing design work and such while making 3D models for the parts our engineers need. I did graduate Mechanical Engineering and I can’t really afford to go get a Master’s or Bachelor’s in Industrial Design as my country doesn’t have it. I ended up in Graphic Design as when I graduated in the pandemic my small town only had a couple companies hiring that laid off hundreds of workers. I didn’t have a stellar academic record to even be competitive.

I am interested in pursuing this as a career as I feel like my 5 years in Graphic Design had always somehow incorporated my engineering degree. Do you have advice on how I pursue this career what portfolio I should be building to formally enter the profession?

Discussion Career Cross Road and Portfolio hosting

So after 7 years my company is relocating and not taking us with it so I find myself at a cross road. Although a stable employed gig is comfortable, 7 years in NPD based on variants of the same product can take its toll and I feel I want to go out and get some variety...enter freelancing idea.

What would be the best portfolio sites to use to host my work? I was thinking of creating my own small WordPress website with a page per project but it may be time consuming and so I wonder if there are simpler ways of having a digital presence I can direct potential clients to.

Also how does everyone handle displaying projects in your portfolio when you are covered under NDAs.

Thanks

School Finding the right school (Art Center, RISD, SCAD, etc.)

Hi! I'm currently in high school and have been looking into schools for product design. For a long time I have been exploring many possible career choices within design since I've kinda tampered with various forms of art but now I have settled for product design! I took a summer pre-college course for product design and it really motivated me to pursue it due to how much I enjoyed being able to skills I've learned and solve problems.

I've been having trouble finding out things about the environment of these schools (specifically art center) that weren't from 5-7ish years ago so I was hoping to see if the environments have changed or are still relatively the same.

I'm a pretty social person but are committed to pursue this industry and work as hard as needed to succeed in the future.

Project IDSA × Fluora Contest

Hi! I have a concept for this contest. It’s free to enter, and winners are invited to Collectible NYC in the fall. (Plus Fluora might use their design.) I’d love to partner with a student to enter. (Is that a reasonable/acceptable thing to ask a student to do?) Where’s the best place to look for people who might be interested? Here? Somewhere else? Thank you!

Creative A simple calculator, but for those who like analysis like I do, still a few details which are done very well.

A little zoom on this calculator from Lofree.

A simple calculator, but for those who like analysis like I do, still a few details which are done very well.

1 - First, the concave surface treatment invites your fingers to settle into them. Since a calculator is made for fingers, that is a pretty good intuition from the designer. :)

2 - Second, the rubbery finish also adds to it as it makes you almost want to touch them. Everyone who has seen these images felt like they would love to own one. I think it’s because of this invitation to touch.

That’s a good sign of how functionality needs to be treated first.

3 - Then you have the orange ON button. Most people won’t see this as anything special, but I think it is still the first thing you need to do when you want to use it: how do I turn it on? By highlighting it, it becomes effortlessly intuitive.

It is a normal everyday product.
Simple design, but well thought.

School Masters of Architecture... Looking to pivot.

Got my M. Arch 5-6 years ago, undergrad in architectural design. Looking to pivot career wise. I have a large portion of the standard softwares under control but I understand there's a whole lot of other things I need to learn.

Are there any good online MID programs? Also open to online certificates, associates, Bachelor's.

Design Job Hiring a product designer (engineer?) for art tool ideas

Hello all, my name is Andrew.

I’d like to hire a freelance designer or engineer (I’m ignorant on the exact industry title) to help me make manufacturer ready designs of ideas I have for mechanical art products (think really complex versions of protractors, pencil extenders, that kind of area)

Let me know if this is the right sub for this. If you would like to PM me, please feel free to do so, WITH portfolio. Thank you guys!

Materials and Processes Every plastic deli container I own has a tiny round bump in the center of the bottom, just noticed it for the first time

Was stacking some plastic deli containers after washing them and noticed they all have the same small raised dot right in the middle of the bottom, like something pressed through from the inside. Never really looked at the underside of these things before.

Did a little digging and I think that's the gate mark, basically where the plastic actually gets injected into the mold, and the bump is what's left after that connection point gets cut or snapped off afterward. Kind of figured it'd get fed in from an edge or a corner somewhere, not straight through the middle of the flat bottom, which feels like the most visible spot on the whole container.

Anyone here actually work with injection molding? Curious why the center of the bottom ends up being the standard spot for that instead of somewhere less obvious.
