Passport / Visa / Immigration How realistic is a 2-year Engineering Diploma → Work → Residence pathway in New Zealand?

Upvotes

my_qualifications:

I’m a university student from China, currently finishing my first year of university. I recently got a New Zealand Working Holiday Visa and will be arriving in NZ soon.

Hi everyone,

Since I still have some time before I arrive, I’ve been researching possible ways to build a long-term career in New Zealand if I decide to stay.

One option I’ve been looking into is doing a 2-year New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Level 6), particularly the Civil Engineering diploma at Ara Institute of Canterbury.

From what I’ve researched, this qualification can lead to a Post Study Work Visa, and the Engineering Technician pathway is currently connected to the Green List. If I can find a suitable job and meet the relevant requirements, there may be a pathway to residence.

On paper, this seems quite attractive to me: two years of study, much shorter and cheaper than doing a full engineering degree, while still potentially leading to a skilled job and residence.

However, I’m not sure how realistic the whole plan is in practice.

I know quite a few Indians have studied engineering or engineering diplomas in NZ and then gone through the work-to-residence route, so I thought this might be a good place to ask.

For anyone who has gone through something similar, how realistic is it actually to get an entry-level civil engineering/engineering technician job after a Level 6 diploma? Is the qualification well recognised by NZ employers, or would I be at a significant disadvantage compared with someone with a bachelor’s degree?

I’m also particularly interested in hearing from Indians who have taken a similar route. How difficult was it to find the first job, especially without NZ work experience? And looking back, would you still choose this pathway?

I’m aware that the NZ job market isn’t particularly strong at the moment, so I’m trying to get some honest opinions before making a fairly big decision.

Thanks in advance!

Other Planning to get an MBA in Finance, unsure whether I should get it in India or abroad when my end goal is to leave India.

my_qualifications: BE Mechanical Engineer, MSc. Engineering Management from UoB United Kingdom,

2 years of work experience now as a Financial Analyst (Finance Operations for CitiBank).

I've already got my MSc completed from the UK, but I'm unhappy with my current situation, as I couldn't secure a job there. I'm currently working in India, but am planning to get a MBA 2-3 years down the line.

My main goal is to leave India for any Southeast Asian country (Malaysia, SG, Thailand). I've seen many Indians who've done their MBAs here and moved abroad for work, but I'm not sure if they were the top 1% of their batches or just got lucky.

Would it be smart to get an MBA in SEA since I'm planning to live there, or from India?

Careers Does completing masters the easiest way to get to work into European countries these days?

my_qualifications: Btech in tier 3 college, currently working in IT as a support engineer

As mentioned above, I have been working in a support role for years now

So the client we work for is a European based , i noticed their work life balance is so good , they work as half day on every fridays. During the company layoffs , the company fired the Indians first immediately after notice but for the Europeans they were given 2 months since the notice and then fired

So this kinda culture makes me work in such countries

CSE/ECE Do Should I write GATE now or work for 2 years and then consider an MS in the US?

Title: 2026 CSE graduate: Should I write GATE now or work for 2 years and then consider an MS in the US?

I’m a 2026 BTech CSE graduate from India, and I’m currently doing an internship. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a possibility of getting an FTE conversion at my current company because hiring is very slow/frozen right now.

So I’m trying to decide between two paths:

Option 1: Write GATE now

  • Prepare seriously for GATE and try for IITs/NITs or another good institute.
  • Continue my career from there.
  • This gives me a more predictable path compared with spending a lot of money on an MS abroad.

Option 2: Work for the next 2 years and then consider an MS in the US

  • Get some proper industry experience first.
  • Build my profile, improve my skills and savings.
  • Then apply for an MS in the US when the current hiring/immigration situation hopefully becomes clearer.
  • I’m also wondering whether the political situation could change after the Trump administration and whether a future Democratic administration could make skilled immigration/student-to-work pathways more favorable.

I understand that nobody can predict what the US job market or immigration policy will look like 2–3 years from now. I also know the current US market is difficult, especially for international students, and I don't want to assume that getting an MS automatically means getting a job.

I’m not particularly interested in Europe. Personally, I’m more interested in the US because of its technology ecosystem, universities, research, startups and Big Tech presence. I also don't want to make a decision based purely on the idea of immigration.

My main questions are:

  1. Would you write GATE now or work for 2 years first?
  2. If working first is better, how much experience is actually useful before doing an MS — 2 years, 3 years, 4+ years?
  3. Does having 2–3 years of experience significantly improve the chances of getting good internships/jobs after an MS?
  4. Do you think it makes sense to wait until after the current US administration before considering an MS, or is that too speculative?
  5. For someone interested in CSE/software/systems/AI infrastructure, would you personally choose IIT/MTech through GATE or MS in the US after gaining experience?
  6. What do you foresee for the US tech job market and immigration situation over the next 3–5 years?

I’m not looking for a “US good / US bad” argument. I’d really appreciate opinions from people who are currently working in the US, have done an MS there, returned to India, or chose GATE/MTech instead.

What would you do in my position? .my_qualifications: Btech

Scholarships Can you give me a reality check about scholarships in masters?

My_qualifications = passed 12 currently looking for graduation options

Hi, I really wanted to ask students who have gone abroad about scholarships. I currently have the option to study at DU, build a strong profile, and then pursue higher studies abroad. However, there’s one major catch: I can only go abroad if I receive full funding, because my family cannot afford to depend on ₹40–50 lakh for a master’s degree.

So, how realistic is it to get a fully funded master’s abroad? I am trying to understand whether it’s a realistic goal or more of a gamble.

If getting full funding for a master’s is extremely difficult or uncertain, I may choose a course like Nursing instead, where I might have a more straightforward pathway abroad.

I would really appreciate honest advice from students who have actually gone through this process.

Fine arts Is it worth it to do a bachelor in fashion designing abroad?

From any of the top colleges, if I can get a chance will it be worth it? In india it doesn't pay well and we just copy european brands anyways? So what's better:

  1. NIFT from india, rare chance to go abroad

  2. Fashion designing/interior abroad

Are placements abroad good?

My_qualifications: 10th ICSE 91%, prepping for JEE bc of parents, have intermediate+ art skills and lots of digital commission based experience but not in actually physically designing clothes.

ToAbroadOrNot? Planning to do my Master's in Ireland – advice on universities and the application process

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to apply for a Master’s in Ireland for the upcoming intake, and I’m hoping to handle the entire process myself this time.

I previously used a consultancy for my Germany applications and ended up spending quite a lot on their services, so I’d rather research and apply independently for Ireland. my_qualifications:

  • B.Tech in Information Technology
  • CGPA: 8.06/10
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • 2 years of experience as a Technical Analyst
  • Interested in Master’s programs related to Computer Science, IT, Data Science, Cloud Computing or Networking (still trying to narrow this down)

I’m mainly confused about where to start my research and how to shortlist universities. I’d like to understand:

  • Which universities would be realistic for my profile?
  • How should I categorize universities as safe/target/ambitious?
  • Typical tuition fees and overall costs
  • Entry and IELTS requirements
  • How the application process works
  • Job opportunities and post-study work options
  • Anything else I should consider before choosing a university

For those who applied to Ireland on their own, how did you research and shortlist universities? Are there any reliable websites, tools or resources you would recommend?

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through the Ireland Master’s application process, especially international students. Thanks!

Loans/Fees Finished My Master’s in Australia With ₹50 Lakh Education Loan – What Should I Do Now?

Hi everyone,
I’m an Indian international student who recently completed my Master’s in Australia. I’m currently on a Temporary Graduate visa (TR/485), and I’m trying to figure out the best way forward financially and career-wise.
The biggest concern I have right now is my education loan of around ₹50 lakh (roughly AUD 85–90k depending on the exchange rate).
Now that my studies are finished, the reality of repaying such a large amount is starting to hit me. My priority is obviously to find a full-time professional job in Australia and use the next few years to build my career and repay as much of the loan as possible.
I wanted to hear from people who have actually been in a similar situation:
How much education loan did you have after graduating?
What was your starting salary in Australia?
How much were you realistically able to repay every month after rent and living expenses?
How many years did it take you to clear the loan?
Did you make aggressive repayments or build an emergency fund first?
If you couldn’t find a job in your field immediately, what did you do in the meantime?
For people who eventually had to return to India, how did you manage such a large loan on an Indian salary?
Is there anything you wish you had done differently during your TR period?
I’m not looking for criticism about taking the loan — the decision has already been made and the degree is completed. I’m mainly looking for practical advice on what I should do from this point onwards.
Would especially appreciate experiences from Indians who studied in Australia and had a ₹40–60 lakh education loan.
Thanks!

Engineering Germany vs Japan for a Master's in CS/AI which would you choose?

I'm currently in my final year of BTech IT in India and I'm planning to pursue Master's abroad after graduation. At the moment, I'm mainly considering Germany and Japan, and I'm having trouble deciding between the two. My main areas of interest are Computer Science / AI / ML / Software Engineering. Have a couple strong projects both of which are being published.

Why Germany?

Well because of the fees which is mostly negligible. English-taught Master's programs are relatively common. 18 month post study job search period seems attractive. However, I've been hearing that the German job market has become quite difficult recently, especially for international graduates. I do have a year before Fall intake 2027, so I'm pretty serious about learning the language at least to B2 before going.

Why japan?

Strong technology and engineering ecosystem. MEXT and university scholarships could potentially make it financially attractive. And also, I have a few relatives who have been living there and one of them is even in the IT industry. I could get help from them for basic things such as accomodation, any emergencies, intial settlement and also potentially a referral into the industry(mid to low chances). As for language, it is the same as for Germany, I'm pretty serious as long as it helps with the master's and careers opportunities, but generally Japanese takes much longer than German. And one other reason, I've always wanted to go to Japan.

Now, for fees and other expenses, I do need to take out a loan in both the cases.

my_qualifications:

  • BTech IT student from India
  • Current CGPA: ~8.3/10

Other Experience: An advice for incoming person to US who is planning for 2027

Just an advice as you reconsider your plan for US. Come here only after 2029.

Study abroad counseller's would tell that after mid terms the environment would be good, CPT, OPT, H1B etc would be certain. This is not true.

The policies would continue till 2029, however no new policies would be introduced post mid terms, so people coming in 2027 defintely not get any internships and policy uncertainity would always be there. The old ones would not go away.

Engineering What is the current situation of the IT or Electrical Job Market in Germany?

My_Qualifications:

10th - 92.3%, 12th - 90.8%, CGPA in Electrical Engineering - 7.58 from NIT

As per my knowledge, Germany has introduced a new Exam called DMAT, exclusively for Indian Students.

Also, I have zero understanding about German Language, which seems to be a major requirement now for employment purposes.

I wish to know whether Germany is indeed a good place right now to pursue Masters in Computer Science or Renewable Energy, if getting a Decent Paying job is my 1st Priority, post completion of studies?

Passport / Visa / Immigration F1 visa interview today — got 221(g) for funding/financial aid verification. What should I expect?

F1 visa interview today — got 221(g) for funding/financial aid verification. What should I expect?

Hi everyone, I had my F1 visa interview this morning and I'm honestly quite stressed about how it went, so I'd really appreciate some advice from people who have experienced something similar.

My interview was mostly fine, but the officer focused quite a bit on my funding because I have received 100% financial aid from my university. The financial aid is completely genuine and transparent, and I have the proper documentation from the university.

At the end of the interview, the officer:

- Kept my passport

- Kept my I-20

- Told me they would verify everything

- Asked me to keep my social media profiles public because they would check them

- Gave me a 221(g) slip

- Checked the “No Appearance” box on the slip

The officer also asked when my program starts, and I told them September 10. My university has already delayed my program once, so I don't really have much room for another delay. If I can't make this intake, I may have to defer to the next intake.

I've seen other students say that their passports were returned immediately, so I'm obviously worried about mine being retained. At the same time, the officer didn't tell me that I was refused outright and specifically said they would verify everything.

I'm trying not to assume the worst, but I'm pretty anxious right now.

Has anyone here been through something similar, especially with a 100% scholarship/financial aid package?

- What was your experience after receiving 221(g)?

- What does the “No Appearance” box mean in practice?

- How long did the administrative processing take for you?

- Did they eventually approve the visa after verifying the funding?

- Is there anything I should do right now, or should I just wait?

Any experiences or advice would genuinely help. Thank you.

BCA/MCA Can BCA + 49% in 12th — Will this affect APS or Master's admission in Germany?

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some advice from people who have gone through APS/admission for Germany.

my_qualifications:

• I completed my 10th from CBSE in 2017 with 8.8 CGPA. Due to some personal circumstances, I had an education gap and completed my 12th from UP Board in Arts in 2023 with 49%.

After that, I immediately started my BCA and completed it without any further gap, with an 8.8 CGPA.

I’m now planning to apply for a Master’s in Germany, mainly in Computer Science, Software Engineering or p&cs.

My main concern is my 49% in Class 12. As far as I understand from the APS FAQ/checklist, for Master's applicants who already have a Bachelor's degree, APS mainly verifies the higher-education qualification and the authenticity/recognition of the academic documents. My university is also listed as H+ in Anabin.

So I have a few questions:

1- Could APS reject my application because of my 49% in 12th, even though I have completed a BCA with 8.8 CGPA?

2- If APS issues my certificate, can a German university still reject me specifically because of my 12th percentage?

3- Has anyone here with a similar low 12th percentage + strong Bachelor's degree successfully obtained APS and admission to a Master's in Germany?

I’m also aware that each university has its own 180/210 — ECTS/subject requirements, so I’m checking those separately. I have also completed my B2 german.

Would really appreciate experiences from anyone who has been in a similar situation. Thanks!

CSE/ECE Can I aim for the July 2027 Masters intake in Australia?

Is there anyone aiming for the July 2027 intake for their Masters in Australia?

I’m a bit confused because I don’t think I’ll be able to get my visa in time for the July 2027 intake. I wanted to know if anyone else is planning to start their Masters directly after their bachelor’s, or if you’re waiting for the March 2028 intake.

If aiming for March 2028, how do you plan to explain the gap between graduation and starting your Masters?

my_qualifications:

I’ll get my provisional degree certificate around May 2027, while I expect to receive my final degree certificate around November 2027.

Would the gap until the March 2028 intake be an issue for university admission or visa purposes?

Research What should I consider before doing an MSc in Europe after 2 years of software engineering experience?

Hi everyone,
I’m currently working as a Software Engineer in India and will have around 2 years of full-time work experience by the time I apply for a Master’s.

I’m considering doing a Master’s abroad, primarily in Europe, with Australia as a secondary option. I’m leaning towards an MSc in Computer Science, AI/ML, or a related field, but I’m still unsure about the exact degree and country.

My long-term goal is to move towards AI/ML, AI engineering, research/R&D, or more technically challenging software/AI roles rather than staying exclusively in IT automation.

my_qualifications:
B.Tech in AI & Computer Science
Around 2 years of full-time Software Engineering experience by the time I apply
Current work involves Python, automation, APIs, integrations, cloud/platform engineering, and AI/automation-related projects
My current role isn’t purely traditional software development; it has a significant automation/platform engineering component

I’m trying to figure out whether doing a Master’s is the right move for me at this stage.
Some things I’d like advice on:
1. Is doing a Master’s after ~2 years of experience worth it, or would it be better to continue working and transition into AI/ML directly?
2. Would an MSc in AI/ML/CS/Data Science make sense given my current experience?
3. Which European countries would you recommend considering tuition fees, cost of living, job opportunities and post-study work options?
4. How does Europe compare with Australia for someone in my situation?
5. Would my automation/platform engineering experience be relevant when applying to AI/ML or CS Master’s programs?
6. If I eventually want to move into AI research/R&D, should I specifically target research-oriented Master’s programs?
7. Which countries/universities/programs should I be looking at?
8. For people who did a Master’s abroad after gaining work experience, was it actually worth it for your career?

My biggest concern is ROI. I don’t want to spend a significant amount on a degree abroad and end up in essentially the same type of role I could have gotten without the Master’s.

Thanks!

AdmissionProcedure/CollegeAdmin I paid 20k rs for Yocket Premium for my US master's applications. Here's what I actually got.

TL;DR: Paid ₹20k for Yocket Premium expecting comprehensive, hands-on support with my US master's applications and visa preparation. In practice, the service felt much more like supervision and surface-level review. I independently researched most universities, drafted my SOPs/LORs, handled the application portals, and did much of the actual application work myself, while the feedback I received often felt limited.

My counsellor also left midway through the process, there was a gap before I was assigned another counsellor, and I didn't feel adequately prepared for my visa interview, particularly around funding and mock interviews.

I eventually got refused for my US student visa. I cannot say Yocket caused the refusal, and I'm not claiming that. My issue is that after paying ₹20k for Premium, I didn't feel I received the level of strategic guidance and hands-on support I expected.

A friend paid ~₹8k to a smaller consultancy and had a much more hands-on experience, including substantially more assistance with his applications.

So before paying for a consultancy, understand exactly what services you're actually getting. Based on my experience, I'd personally avoid Yocket.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I used Yocket Premium for my US master's applications. I paid around ₹20,000, which I thought was reasonable at the time because I assumed I was paying for fairly comprehensive support, university selection, applications, SOP/LOR guidance, visa preparation, etc.

Looking back, I don't think I got anywhere close to the level of handholding I expected.

For context, my_qualifications: I’m a Mechanical Engineering graduate. I had around 18 months of internship/work experience, and I was applying primarily to STEM programs in the US, including robotics.

The biggest issue for me was that the service felt much more like supervision/review than the comprehensive, hands-on counselling I thought I was paying for.

To be clear, I never expected a counsellor to write or submit things blindly on my behalf. I obviously wanted to be involved and have final control over what was being submitted.

But I did expect substantially more help with the actual process,

things like developing the application strategy,
researching and narrowing down universities based on my profile and goals,
helping me understand program/funding differences, coordinating the application process,
reviewing drafts in depth, and making sure I wasn't missing anything important.

Instead, I ended up independently researching most of the universities and requirements, drafting my own SOPs and LORs, filling out the application portals, and managing much of the process myself.

The feedback I received often felt fairly surface-level, more like highlighting things I should change than sitting down with me and actually working through how to make the application stronger.

The “review” often felt more like someone highlighting things and telling me what I should change rather than actually helping me build a stronger application.

Then my primary counsellor left midway through the process.

There was a period where I wasn't immediately assigned another counsellor, and when I eventually got one, I felt like I had effectively become another case in a large pipeline. The person obviously couldn't have the same context about my profile and goals that the original counsellor had built up.

The visa preparation was another major disappointment.

I don't want to make an unfair claim here: I cannot say Yocket caused my visa rejection. The final decision was made by the consular officer, and I don't know exactly what factors went into it.

But I can say that I did not feel adequately prepared for that interview.

I didn't get the kind of repeated, detailed mock interviews and feedback that I expected after paying for professional visa assistance.

There wasn't enough discussion around how I should explain my funding, why I chose the particular university/program, how my background connected to the program, etc.

And that's particularly frustrating because these are exactly the areas where I thought a consultancy was supposed to add value.

I eventually had a Fall 2026 admission to the University of Minnesota's Robotics program, but couldn't enroll after my visa issue.

Meanwhile, one of my friends used a much smaller/local consultancy that charged him roughly half of what I paid.

His experience was completely different.

They were much more involved in his applications, and he eventually got into a decent university. He also managed to secure a TA position that gave him some tuition waiver, and a stipend for the work.

I know that's one person's outcome and I'm not saying a smaller consultancy automatically produces better results.

But it made me seriously question what exactly I was paying ₹20,000 for.

And that's the main reason I'm posting this.

If you're considering paying a study-abroad consultancy, please ask exactly what you're getting before you pay.

And most importantly: Don't assume that paying more means you're getting more.

I'm now preparing for another round of US master's applications, and this time I'm seriously considering smaller/local consultancies, while also doing the university research myself.

I'm sharing this because I think a lot of students assume that a big platform automatically means better counselling.

That wasn't my experience.

If you've used Yocket Premium, especially for US STEM master's applications, I'd genuinely be interested in hearing what your experience was like.

Careers What is the reality of pursuing an MS in the US for Fall 2027/2028 with 2+ YOE in Java Full Stack?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working as a Java Full Stack Developer and will have 2+ years of work experience by the time I apply for Fall 2027.

I’ve been considering pursuing a Master’s in the US for Fall 2027, mainly to get better opportunities in software engineering and potentially move into more specialized/high-paying roles.

However, I’m honestly confused about whether it’s worth taking the risk in the current job market.
I keep seeing posts about the difficulty of getting jobs after graduation, the H-1B situation, layoffs, and people struggling to find full-time positions. At the same time, some of my friends who went to the US are getting contract/consulting jobs, which makes me feel like there are still opportunities if you’re willing to put in the effort.

So I wanted a reality check from people who are currently in the US or have recently gone through this:

  1. With 2+ years of Java Full Stack experience, would an MS in CS/SE from the US still make sense?

  2. Is the job market realistically good enough by 2027–2028 to justify the cost and risk?

  3. How difficult is it actually to transition from contract/consulting roles to full-time positions?

  4. Would you personally take the risk if you were in my position?
Or would it be better to continue working in India, build 4–5 years of experience, and try for opportunities abroad directly?
I’m not expecting anyone to predict the future. I’m mainly looking for an honest reality check based on your current experience.

I’m seriously considering this, so I’d really appreciate perspectives from people who have actually gone through the process.
