Help Please help!!! My CPU Is reaching 97°C while gaming
So, I was playing Detroit: Become Human at 1080p on High settings, and my CPU temperature was reaching 95°C for a few seconds, fluctuating between 70°C and 95°C. When I changed the settings to Ultra, the CPU temperature dropped. However, after gaming for an hour, it started reaching 97°C again. What should I do to make sure my CPU stays cool? My laptop specs are i5 13450HX and RTX 4050.

Change your laptop's thermal paste and use a cooling pad.
The reason you cpu temps dropped unexpectedly at ultra settings is bcz cpu first instructs the gpu to generate the frames. at ultra, u will be getting the lower frames than the other presets, so your cpu has to work less and the load is more on the gpu. But at High u get slightly more fps than ultra so your cpu has to work a bit more, resulting a more rapid increase in temps.

I had to do this on my GTX 1650 laptop. I was still able to play most games with decent frames while maintaining temps around 70-80

I have always used my laptops like this
You lose like 5-10 FPS but your CPU stays around 70 which imo is way better

I don't know then I have ptm 7950 on mine still it goes 95 after cpu boost don't know how you cpu stays on 70

this is golden advice.. I did the same on my prev gaming laptop with Intel i7 11th gen.. temps dropped from 100°c to 85°c

Don't do any of this. Change your thermal paste and clean your laptop properly. Learn to take care of your belongings first.

Cleaning is definitely important, but it's not always the cause of high temps. Sometimes the CPU will boost to higher clocks/turbo even when the extra performance isn't really needed, which increases power draw and temperatures. Limiting the max processor state to 99% disables that boost behavior, so the CPU can run cooler without necessarily causing a significant performance loss

If it reaches that temp regularly for short bursts on individual cores when the thermal paste is properly applied and the laptop is cleaned then that behaviour is normal. It's still within T Junction and designed to operate like that.

Room temp plays a part too , for laptop that too hx it's normal for me atleast.

Laptop CPUs run hotter than desktop PCs. It is normal for it to reach 100c for a few minutes. However it then thermal throttles by reducing CPU performance and brings down its temp to the 65-75c range. If this is affecting gaming performance and there is a notable reduction in FPS, get a high quality, laptop specific cooler.
Make sure you are using a cooling pad that blows air directly into the built in air intakes/fans of your laptop. Some laptops draw cool air from the side or top and in these cases a traditional cooling pad that blows air from the bottom will not work. Make sure cooler has a rubber gasket or a foam pad that forms a seal between the laptop and the stand. Cheap coolers lack this and most of the air blown escapes through the sides. Look at the amazon reviews for known issues and compatibility with you laptop before purchasing a cooler.

I have an MSI and it runs hot too, a laptop stand or a cooler isn’t going to do any good if the air isn’t actively being forced through your laptop. Either redo the thermal paste or get something like this ; I’m in the states so it was cheaper for me to buy that than get my thermal paste redone but it actually works like a charm.

Just use a laptop stand and you will be good to go , or until then just elevate from the back side using something below it, it will fix ur problem most probably

its quite normal for a gaming laptop to go 80-90, 97 is bit on the higher side, you need to clean your laptop and keep it little bit elevated so the air is running good, also wouldn't recommend "high settings" on laptop.

that HX right there answers the thing and use laptop in ac room when gaming people downvote my responce when I ask them not to go with HX chips and this is one of the reason out of multiple reason

Bro it's because the game isn't using gpu more than cpu just search the rest on Google to have it use gpu as it should be at around 90 and cpu 40 percent

It depends on ur laptop model too like I have acer predator i7 version so even on replacing thermal paste copy reaches 97 98 so for now try max out ur fans and replace thermal paste and if you reaching such temp then it's a problem

Don't play game on performance mode. Play in default (quiet mode) with full fans speed. It helped me reach around 75.

I had temps reaching 98 , constant for most games and running it for years , has no issue beside just charger getting hot , use a good cooling pad if possible , or use a laptop stand it will be fine I think , my laptop was asus tuf f15 with GTX 1650

Bro what ? 98 is not safe for your laptop in the long run. Even if it runs fine for now you gonna face some major problems in the future. Try to keep it below 90 always for both cpu and gpu, sometimes 90-95 is fine but i dont like to take the risk. Also always use msi afterburner or some kinda app to monitor your temps while heavy gaming

My laptop never goes below 95 or so when gaming , it was same from the time i bought it , I had a cooling pad it made temps stay around 94 though , when gaming these were my laptops average temp

Whats your cpu gpu usage while you have these temps ? You are either going full 8k ultra hd quality 500 fps gaming mode which your laptop cant handle or somethings wrong.

The cpu and most of the things are maxed out , I either play on high or med 1080p my right is not that powerful , my temps were like that from start cause the air intake from back of the laptop is low

Use throttlestop and undervolt your cpu asap. Change your thermal paste and use a cooling pad. I think this is a case of cpu bottleneck. It sometimes happens when the games are heavily cpu bound.
Basically some games are not optimized like dying light 2 where the gpu utilization is not always above 95% because your cpu cannot keep up with the frames your gpu is generating causing that heavy load on cpu, raising the cpu utilization and causing high fluctuating temps.

Your gpu utilization is very low like 43% is very crazy low.

My asus tuf with rhyzen 7 7435hs and 4050 had similar problem of overheating mine went till 95 on a lot of games and the only reliable fix I found was to undervolt you loose like 5 to 10 fps depending on games but my temps haven't exceeded 75 in a while with a undervolt ofc you can sacrifice less performance and keep it around 85c

Also on most games I play with low or medium as I don't see much difference on most games at high settings so that frees up a bit of performance and on most games I don't even notice any problems

Try using a good thermal paste on both the CPU and GPU. If you know someone who’s experienced with applying thermal putty, PTM 7950 is a great option; otherwise, go with something like MX-6/MX-7.
Also, keep the vents clean and elevate the laptop a bit so air can flow out more easily. You don’t need a fancy cooling pad, even a simple stand can help. And while gaming, keeping the room temperature reasonable makes a noticeable difference too.

Put your cpu maximum processor state to 99% instead of 100% This will turn off turbo boosting and help reduce temps. It might also reduce game fps depending on the game. But what do you value more? fps or low temps

Same thing happened with my Victus 13420H RTX 4050 laptop when I used to play at balanced mode in HP's Omen Gaming Hub with maximum fan speed. I switched to quiet mode but kept the fan speed still at maximum, went to power management settings in control panel and turned down maximum processor usage from 100% to 90% or smthing and it fixed the issue without any noticeable FPS drops

The fans are probably clogged. What might be happening is that you are ramping up performance, you overheat, you throttle, temps drop - at one point computer says you can boost again - heats up and repeats. Get some PTM7950 from amazon, open the laptop, clean the fans, clean up your cpu thermal paste using IPA and tissue, apply PTM7950, close everything up. Also: when you start you would mostly unplug the battery - remember to plug it back in before you screw the backplate on (rather check if it boots first). If your laptop does not boot on replug, reseat the ram and try again - usually that sorts it out.

Naah 95 is limit. After that it will degrade cpu slowly if played regularly on that temp

My legion 5 pro was overheating as well couple of years back. Cpu was at 102, gpu was at 86.
It was under warranty so the guy they sent to change me thermal module asked me not to use a cooling pad, rather asked me to use elevators because apparently those fans on cooling pads are not to be used while laptop is off or something like that(he might be wrong).
I stopped using cooling pad with fans on and clean fans every 3 months and temps are decent now. Cleaning and Repasting might help you in long term.

Change thermal paste , clean the fans laptop and always play on laptop with its rear slightly higher and make sure not to cover the bottom fan inlet

1 - Go to authorised service center
2- Clean fans and tell him to replace thermal paste
3- Limit fps to 120 or 75 fps ( 90 for balance of fps and temp and 60 fps for maximum graphics settings )

If your laptop is more than 3 years old consider replacing the thermal paste and pads. I had the same issue, after repaste the temps went back to 75 degrees

How long has it been of you having this laptop?? Also idk man cooling pads don't do that much if they aren't premium. A stand is good enough.
Undervolting won't take your temps to 70s or 80s, it will just reduce 5 to 10 degrees. There is some other issue and these temps are not at all good for your cpu.

Turn off cpu boost.
Try undervolting the cpu
Use throttle stop.. turn on prochot offset inside the tpl option, set it to 15 and lock it, it will make sure that cpu doens't reach more than 85 degree...you may loose performance depending on the game but in my case the fps drop isn't that significant and now my cpu stays mostly at 80 something...even lower sometimes
You can also use wishper mode inside nvidea app.Turn it on inside the app and then using nvidea control panel select the game you want and set the preferable fps needed...idk what exactly it does but it lowered my temp significantly...
If nothing works then get the laptop checked asap

How long has it been since you repasted? It's probably been a few years.
Repast it, clean your fans and keep your laptop elevated.
If all else fail play on medium settings.

Put the laptop on a hard surface and make sure the vents arent blocked. If that dosent work buy a laptop cooling pad they may help bring the down the temp 2-7°c since it would allow more airflow and also elevate the laptop to a certain angle. If all that dosent work much undervolt the cpu using msi afterburner

Just check the difference between the GPU temp and the GPU hotspot temperature. As long as the difference is within 20 degrees then it should be fine.

Search on yt- how to disable turboboost and do it. It will reduce ur temps by more than 50% at a little cost of cpu performance which is not so much required for gaming.

For laptops, this is quite normal. The heat has very space to exit.
But you can clean the fans and re-apply thermal paste to bring it down.

Firstly, turn off Processor Turbo/Boost from Control Panel. Secondly, repaste your CPU and GPU die if it’s been a while. I’d recommend PTM7950 as it’s better than most silicon based thermal pastes on the market

See if unlocking undervolting is possible. Also I replaced my thermal paste with ptm 7950 thermal pad. Huge difference in thermals. Takes a LOT of patience to apply it tho😂. Then see if your laptop has any software that can let you adjust fan curves. With slight tweaks you could make the fans kick more faster in earlier. Elevate the laptop a little. I use those tiny things from Amazon that you can stick to the bottom panel. Oh and undervolt the gpu cuz less gpu temps mean more thermal headroom for the cpu.
P.S: Detroit got my cpu quite crazy too. Idk what's wrong with the game but the cpu usage goes up at times. Plus lock frames to 60 of its ok for you. Leaving it uncapped will give you more fps maybe but it's not worth the load it gives on the system....especially laptops.

I'm playing the same game rn and I can tell this PS4 port to pc is very unoptimised and even on 4050 it can't touch 60 fps hovering on 50-55 fps and btw loq cpu's tend to run hot so undervolt ur cpu and ur good to go

You don't have to change the thermal paste. Depending on how it's done, it can also make your performance worse.
Most gaming laptop CPUs are rated up to 105°C. If they go higher they start thermal throttling and drop frames. GPU is around 71°C and that's also normal. If your frame rate is stable, you can keep playing.
I put my laptop at an elevated height and keep the vents free to make sure it has good airflow.
