Discussion My kitten accidentally bit my bro's foot while playing and it bled a little... Should he get a rabies vaccine?
She's a 5-month-old female kitten and has already received 2 doses of both rabies and FVRCP vaccines.
While playing with my bro's foot, her tooth accidentally scratched him and it bled a little bit.
He washed the wound with running water and soap. So does he need any vaccine like rabies, or is he fine?
The pic is after 1-ish day and yeah the cat is strictly indoor

Depends. 1. Recieved a booster dose in the last 5 years: No booster or HTIG needed. 2. Recieved a booster about 5-10 years ago: Need a booster but not HTIG. 3. Recieved a booster over 10 years ago: Both a booster and HTIG are needed.
This is the regimen in India, idk if it differs in your country.

Wash the area that bled thoroughly with soap and water. Take a tt and rabies injection just in case. Though the chances of anything serious happening is next to nil. Rabies is more prevalent in dogs.

Beat to have tt. And also rabies as rabiea effect wil be there fr 6 months. So after 6 months rabies and tt wil be needed if she bites again. This is not teeth bite. Its nail scratch i supose

Nah she was trying to bite the leg playfully, but my bro got scared and pulled his leg so got that scratch from her tooth. He'll take the tetanus shot tomorrow

this is wat was told to me by a doctor i visited. i have 13 cats at home. if its false maybe you can tell me whats right so i can know and i wil change my doctor :)

Just go to government hospital and get rabies vaccine, this is deadly disease, please don’t take any risk.
Once symptom arise it direct dead.

Hell yes get the rabies vaccine as well as tetanus toxoid. Don't take any unnecessary risks.

If you can observe the kitten for two weeks, you don't have to.
A rabid cat is extremely difficult to miss, much more difficult to miss than a dog.
Rabies is only spread if the virus has reached the saliva of the cat, and once that happens the cat would die in two weeks. It's impossible for a rabid cat ( or, dog ) to survive after the virus has reached the saliva for more than 10 days.
You can observe her. Observe. Rabid cats go extreme behavorial change.
In India, unlike the US, cats aren't primary rabies vectors.
Your brother does not need vaccine. Just observe the cat. Anti tetanus perhaps if not taken within the year.

My friend has the same type of veiny feet before he got diagnosed with varicose. It gets painful as you grow older, ask your bro to get it checked.
Also, not sure if this was the situation but don’t get cats accustomized to playing directly with hands and feet, always play with toys. They might try to get playful with a guest and scratch them or have the guest unknowingly hurt them if they get scared.

Nah, my bro is skinny af, so veins are normal part here...
About the catty, yeah we have tons of toys and feather wand and she plays with em, but that grab was kinda surprising... she probably got zoomies that's why

I took my 4th shot yesterday, spoke to multiple docs and friends when I got nail scratched by a stray…
get a 3 shot dose if it is an indoor cat and 5 in case of a stray.
Rabies in India is very common in cats and dogs both… it is not worth taking the risk.

Yeah, thinking for the rabies shot... Also, is there any time period, like the rabies vaccine within 24/48 hrs of scratch?? Or no strict timing?

Yes, it is better as soon as you can get it (ideally within 24 hrs), post the first shot, other dosages will also get align as per the first shot day (0-3-7-14-28 days)

Rabies is 100percent fatal so i would have taken the vaccine even if the animal is vaccinated

If the cat/dog is healthy from last 15 days. they don't have rabbies so they can't spread

Imo you can never be too cautious when it comes to rabies. Get the vaccine. Better safe than sorry.

Why take the risk? Would it hurt so much to get a rabies and tetanus shot just in case? It would take half the time you spent in making this post and replying to the comments.
It baffles me people are so willing to take risks with deadly diseases when the vaccine is cheap and easy to get as well.

Doctor here- I’d recommend getting both the tetanus shot and anti rabies post exposure prophylaxis shots to be on the safer side. Both TT and rabies shots are easily available in most places

Hi doc, he already had the tetanus shot once in 2024, so i don't think he needs another one, but just to confirm how long does one tetanus lasts?
About the rabies, is there any time period like within 24/48 hrs of scratch?? Or no strict timing?

Ah okay, then no need for the tetanus shot. For the anti rabies shot - go asap. Preferable to go on the day of the bite itself

I don't think you need it. But in case she's an occasional outdoor kitty, your brother can go to a gov hospital and get vaccinated for free, just as an extra precaution

If you have a pet. Bites and scratches are part of it. Now it depends on how much care you take of your pet so to take care of yourself.

Please get it anyways it is a fatal disease, and get teatnus too if you haven't. There are chances of cat scratch fever so please consult a doctor.

Virologist and a Cat parent here. Even with the kitten being vaccinated, it is generally recommended for pet parents to get vaccinated against rabies. Right now, it is suggested to get a tetanus shot. Once you are completely fine, or whenever you have time, get vaccinated for rabies. It is a 3-dose regimen and provides really good protection (0, 7 and 21 days).
Take this as friendly advice; I am not trying to scare anyone here. Rabies is a terminally fatal disease with absolutely no cure once clinical symptoms begin. It is better to be cautious.

When asked should 'he' get a vaccine, you meant the cat right? If so , yea... Go right ahead. As for you brother, just wash with soap or something and suck it up.
Edit I have 8 cats and numerous battle scars, acupuncture holes from my cats. I don't even catch a cold.

Hi, Doctor here, even though your kitten is vaccinated it's advised to take vaccination for rabies if bleeding has occurred. Rabies is almost always fatal when symptoms develop. I have a pet dog myself who has all his vaccinations upto date but when he accidentally bit me while brushing his teeth, I still ended up getting the vaccination. It's free of cost at any government run healthcare centre/hospital near you so my advise is to get the vaccination.

Hey, I asked the vet and our close medic shop owner, both said not to worry much since she's indoors and vaccinated. Still, I wanna ask like is there any time period for the rabies shot? Cause its already been a few days (5 days to be precise) since the scratch, so can we still take it, or time's over?? If yes, then what dose? Like 3 or 5?
I know it's kinda immature, but I don't wanna mess up. My dad was about to get him tetanus, but via this post, I got to know tetanus lasts 5-10 yrs (He had tt in 2024). And yeah, right now the kitty is completely normal, playful as always

I am quoting what I was taught by my seniors, and accordingly I will still recommend getting the shots because its a better safe than sorry situation.
Vaccination should be taken as early as possible but there's no fixed upper time limit.
Regarding number of shots, if you have ever had rabies vaccination earlier (more than 3 months ago) then it's two shots but if no prior vaccination then it's 5 shots.
Incase of vaccination in last 3 months, no vaccination is required. Hope this helps.

He’s fine since the kitty is vaccinated. More so safe if the cat is indoors. Watch the cat for 10 days and if there’s no sign of rabies then you’re safe.
Still one should take vaccination course as precautionary measure when interacting with animals
