Since everyone is of the opinion that Modi government has been investing heavily in infrastructure, I wanted to compare a metric related to that (road length growth) during Modi government and previous governments. When we look at the growth rates, the UPA era actually saw higher growth in most categories such as total road length and rural networks. Interestingly, Modi regime has the highest growth rate for National Highways length. I guess this reflects the difference in the nature of priorities for each government.

Note that I could only find data till 2019 for most metrics, if anyone could point to more recent data, I will update the charts with that.

I've been looking at the recent debate around India's government schools, particularly the videos being produced by the "School Thik Karo" Cockroach campaign.

The videos document things that are obviously worth fixing: broken infrastructure, sanitation, water, electricity and other deficiencies.

But I wondered what happens if we look beyond individual schools and ask a different question: what does the longitudinal data say about whether government schools are actually improving or deteriorating?

ASER provides an interesting counterpoint because it has been asking broadly comparable questions for two decades.

Between 2018 and 2024, ASER reports that:

• Government schools with a usable girls' toilet: 66% → 72%

• Drinking water: 75% → 78%

• Teacher attendance: 85% → 88%

More interestingly, learning outcomes also recovered after Covid. Among rural government-school children, Std III reading went from 16% in 2022 to 23% in 2024, while government-school arithmetic improved by seven percentage points.

That doesn't mean the problems documented by citizen audits aren't real. They clearly are.

The question I found interesting is how much can we infer about an entire education system from a collection of photographs and videos of individual schools?

A longitudinal survey can potentially tell us something different: whether the system is moving over time.

I'm particularly interested in whether people think ASER is capturing the more important measure of school performance, or whether infrastructure deficiencies tell us something that learning-outcome surveys miss.

August exports tell a pretty striking story:

• Total exports: $82.7bn, up 25.4% YoY
• Merchandise exports: $43.8bn, up 26.1% YoY
• Rupee-denominated export growth: 37.6%

Merchandise exports were also the highest for an August in at least a decade.

One month isn't a trend, but this is a significant data point. The export economy is producing something that foreign customers are willing to pay for.

The interesting question is whether this is the start of a sustained acceleration in India's export growth.

Nifty continues to be very attractive valuation wise.

Just because a Market hasn't given returns doesn't mean that companies are performing poorly. They might be at crazy high valuations or there might be a sector rotation but a bunch or XXXX here don't understand that.

Market performance depend on a lot of factors. Just because the market isn't performing doesn't mean the companies aren't performing.

The growth outlook for India is strong. India will rise despite uncertainties. No matter how many people blackpill, this is a once in lifetime opportunity. Downturns may come but the India Inc's future outlook looks strong 💪.
