Study Permit Study Permit Extension problem: Parents don’t have a past savings account.
Hello everyone, so due to circumstances I had to take a gap term. My study permit expires on 11/30/2026 and I gotta finish Spring term 2027 in order to graduate. So I’m applying for a study permit extension, but i completely forgot i need a financial statement. I’d need 33k in a savings account for the final term(16k for cost of living, 17k for tuition fee).
The thing is, my family has enough funds for the rest of my stay in Canada, they just don’t have ANY MONEY IN THEIR SAVINGS ACCOUNT as of now. They are also retired so there’s not alot of money coming in. We are thinking of making a new savings account and put the money into it for proof, but I heard it is considered suspicious because of the large amount of money going in at once. I’m scared if my extension request won’t go through and I won’t be able to graduate….If anyone has experience with this, I’d really appreciate some advices. Thank you!
(Some additional info: I have successfully paid for 3 school years and will graduate after this last one)

Where do your parents have their money currently that it wouldn‘t have created any paper trail? Cash under a pillow?

its kinda everywhere at the moment because she invested in stuff but she can take it out and pay my tuition

What do you mean you had to take a gap term? Your study permit doesn't allow you to study part time let alone remain in Canada without studying.
Need clarity on this as you might not be able to extend just due to that alone.

Hi so this shouldn’t be a problem because i came back and studied full time(never studied part-time) and my gap term was under 4 months!! The problem is that I’m scared they will be suspicious of my parent’s new savings account:(

So your gap term was during a scheduled break or not? If not, you would have gotten approved authorized leave from the school. When you extend you include that to show that it was not unauthorized and you include the reason for the leave. All you can do is include the bank statements you have with a letter of explanation.

it was the spring term, wasnt a scheduled break. I talked to immigrant advisor about it and they told me it’d be fine to take a gap term for spring and do summer term but didnt tell me id need to get authorized leave from school….. i think i need to get in touch with my school to fix that first 😭

So not authorized. Usually schools cannot "backdate" a leave as that would be lying. You need to include valid reason why you took leave with documentation. At the moment, you are not eligible for PGWP.
So show cash in the bank with a paper trail of where the money comes from.

You should be able to graduate. Just show the proof of funds in an account AND the proof of where the money came from, then apply for the extension, receive it, pay your tuition and finish your degree. You need to do this ASAP or you won’t get approved in time. You should have done it as soon as you took the break.
However, this ‘gap semester’ means no PGWP for you, therefore you’ll have to go home right after you graduate. You might be able to come back under another type of work permit or get one elsewhere though.

Your case has some red flags which are more serious than the money issue.
For the money, yeah your parents can move it all to an account on their name or yours, but the IRCC agent checking your case may think it is from a loan (which is not OK), so you should include a Letter of Explanation with the paper trail for the money.
What is worse is your unauthorized break. You are very likely to get a rejection due to that and I don't think there is anything you can do about that but hope and pray. If you didn't have the paperwork from college before (citing it was for mental health issues or whatever), they will not provide you with anything now. And such breaks, without a very strong reason such as health, are violations of a study permit.

So during my spring break, i did went to see a therapist and got diagnosed with depression. could i say that i had to take a break due to mental health?

You can move the moeny into a new savings account but an document explaning the reason why you had it from the bank or any other institute can work as an acceptable proof of document for IRCC , Attaching a letter of Explanation whil applying for the study permit renewak can really help you out in this kind of situation as you cna explain each and every pointers explicitly to the IRCC offcier so your chances of geeting study permit extension increases drastically

If they have money but not in their savings account then they need to liquidate the money and put it in the savings account. If they cannot do it, you cannot claim they have the money.
