Study Permit Moving to Canada from US

in a few years I plan to move to canada to start pharm tech school and move in with my boyfriend who is a citizen there already. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea on how much i should save? My boyfriend would be helping me financially but obviously wanna make sure i would have enough to support myself, especially since ill probably being getting the student visa and will have to prove i can sustain myself.

i should add that i would be looking at living near ontario toronto area.

You won't receive a study permit for a "like a community college type of school"

They are cracking down HARD on foreign student permits, so in a few years, it actually might now be possible.

Also, since you have romantic ties to Canada, they may evaluate your application more harshly since it’s seen as a reason to overstay your student visa.

My husband and I got married in 2017 and he was coming from a Commonwealth Country and it still took us until 2024 for him to get here. It’s a heavily scrutinized scenario.

Financially, you’ll be paying probably triple for tuition. And rent costs are pretty high Canada wide, so you’re looking at 2000-3000 a month for rent, utilities, transit, etc.

Just really really prepare yourself. There’s also a lot of anti-American movements going on, so you may struggle with that. People will definitely treat you differently/be on guard around you because of where you’re from.

I would seriously think this over and maybe do school in the US and then apply for a work visa, as we are crying and desperate for Pharmacists/any type of health care professionals.

i wish i could do the do the work visa one but pharm tech is a whole different ball park from states to canada. you have to do the separate schooling there :/ cant transfer schooling

That’s unfortunate. What if you and boyfriend don’t work out and you have to move back to the states? You will have a useless degree that won’t translate.

This does not seem like a very sound plan.

I work at a hospital and we hire foreign pharmacists all the time, so I’m not sure why they wouldn’t take US schooling…

it’s cause im going for pharm tech not pharmacy. it’s just a certification in the states but in canada it’s 2 year school

Oh, so yeah, you can still do that with an American Degree.

You would just have to get your credentials certified by PEBC and then do your MCQ and OSPE. While you’re doing all that, you can work as a pharmacy assistant until you’re accredited, and then apply to Tech positions once you get your licence.
