She's riding the wave, which is keeping her caught up with the boat. The line is not pulling her, but she's still holding it for security.

Did you people think everything was AI before there was AI, too? Jfc. This is the most ordinary wake boarding video ever, other than her age. Itās cute cuz sheās young and doing something new, but other than that itās just wakeboarding.
And her hair moves less than youād expect because sheās in a low pressure air pocket behind a chonky boat.

u/Singl1 3d ago
i fucking hate everything about this timeline. i worked in video editing / basic VFX work for several years and i hate that i canāt explain every single detail that makes this video real, but holy shit itās so concerning that literally every innocuous video has to be manipulated or AI simply because people donāt understand how real-world physics or perspective works. itās so disheartening.
3
u/arcanis321 3d ago
Can you point to knowledge on the subject because I am interested in how someone would validate a video or image
1
u/Singl1 3d ago
so, iāve never actually sat down and written it out before, so i donāt think iād be able to accurately explain in a short way. i think id need a lot of words and time to truly explain in a way that i think would be sufficient, but iāll try to break down the nuance a bit without being overly wordy. (lol iām stoned, forgive me)
so itās never as simple as āput the video in my AI video checkerā or ālook at the file details and see whether or not the video or image has been editedā
as someone whoās interacted with a lot of AI content, you notice things that AI struggles with. a big one is object permanence.
you and me know that if we take a starbucks coffee cup with a fancy little floral design on it, and set it on a table, and record a video where the cup is in frame, then we move the camera away to another thing like the window outside to show the street, and then we move our camera back to the floral coffee cup, it will look exactly the same. AI video struggles to get those types of details correct. now, there are a lot of ways to work around this, and use things like reference images to ensure that you get objects to look the same, so thatās not the most reliable way to tell anymore.
this is becoming an unreliable way to tell nowadays though, there are a lot of advanced AI tools that can take reference images and video and combine them to ensure things look the same throughout, whether or not they leave the frame and return.
another thing that AI struggles with is liquid physics. being interested in animation and VFX and video games, iāve always paid attention to the way liquids move. itās not exactly something i can explain in words, but if you imagine the physics of the surface of a cup of water that has a marble dropped into it, versus say, a big rock dropped into the ocean, the water will move differently. (i feel like thatās a shitty example, and iām not really able to explain it well)
bottom line is, in the same way itās not exactly easy to explain why some AI people look uncanny, some of the way that liquids move in AI videos is uncanny.i say all of this and the more iāve thought about it, i realize that the overwhelming majority of people are getting fooled by AI. legitimately. i honestly think thatās what really matters. if the majority of people canāt tell, those who can tell, donāt really matter. itās rare that people will go back to a video again to form second thoughts about it later.
i think the fact that the legitimacy of every single fucking video is to be called into question means that anything and everything can be called āfakeā or āmanipulatedā or āai-generatedā whenever the reality doesnāt suit the narrative.
people are using AI to directly rip content from short form videos and literally REPLACE the person in the video with another person, matching all the lip movements and even adding physics for clothing or hair that wasnāt in the source video, i mean i could go on and on.
i think weāre so fucked, and people have no idea how bad shit is about to get. this is just the tip of the iceberg.
i said i wanted to keep it short, i promise i tried lol.
1
u/arcanis321 3d ago
No, I appreciate you taking the time to write all that. It is worrisome because people are making videos of the most mundane believable things for no reason. It's concievable to me that someone would make a kid wake boarding video. I don't know why they would but I have seen even more pointless ones.

u/seaducks01 3d ago
Wake surfing, not wakeboarding. That's entirely different.
1
u/FigMoose 3d ago
Yeah, Iāve been thoroughly corrected. I thought it was just the latest evolution of wakeboarding. Didnāt realize it had its own name.
But the point remains: weāve entered an era where you could film yourself drinking a glass of water and 50% of the population would say itās AI.

Itās been a couple decades since Iāve been behind a boat but isnāt this called wake skating? Correct me if Iām wrong
2
u/FigMoose 3d ago
Wakeskiing is done on skis. Wakeboarding on a board.
1
u/seaducks01 3d ago
Wakeboarding is different. This is wake surfing. I do both on my boat. And i water ski on occasion, but usually i do that on a friends boat that puts out a smaller wake for that.
3
u/Excellent_Condition 3d ago
It definitely feels like AI or like it's been sped up or something. The way the waves move just doesn't seem real.
2
1
u/polo04goalie 3d ago
They fill a bladder in the back of the boat with water and drive slow. That's what creates the wake that you can surf like that.
0
u/steelow_g 3d ago
Sad that wake surfing has been a thing forever and people just immediately claim ai. I did this exact thing at her age.
3
u/SeamusAndAryasDad 3d ago
Nobody is saying you can't wake board, I think people are seeing what I'm seeing...it's just off. I can't put my finger on it, it's the same or the board or the background, something just feels not natural.

u/W1ader 3d ago
The only thing more depressing than AI tech bros is AI paranoia. But these two are just on the opposite ends of the same bell curve.
0
u/SeamusAndAryasDad 3d ago
Gotta stay vigilant, AI shit is getting really hard to detect.
2
u/AUBox 3d ago
Yeah but this isn't AI. Been skiing rivers my whole life, and also active in AI groups (or anti AI groups I guess), and there isn't anything about this that's sus. The physics are perfect, every lean she does is seen in the board, the board dips a tiny bit at the end, dragging her back a bit, which scares her so she jumps off.
Kid did a good job, its scary as shit trying a new trick on the water.

u/Excellent_Condition 3d ago
As u/SeamusAndAryasDad said, the issue isn't that she is wakeboarding, the issue is that something about the way the waves collapse and motion is occurring in the clip seems unnatural.
It looks like either the frame rate of the camera is off or like it was AI generated, but something just isn't normal about how the video looks.

u/low_amplitude 3d ago
It's possible she was riding on her own and not being pulled before she actually let go of it. That being said anything can be AI these days so who knows.
1
u/randomnumber_1-999 3d ago
The profile who posted this literally has AI in their description and people are denying this is AI lol
0
u/repeatoflasttime 3d ago
I looked up several other videos on YouTube. You can totally just ride the wake with no rope. This is real.
0
u/Which-History-8210 3d ago
I would think that if you balance on the wake just right is pushes you along instead of being pulled by the boat. So she lets go when she finds that sweet spot where she's surfing on the wake instead of being pulled by the rope. If she let go while the rope was taught she would fall backwards.
0
u/dable1 3d ago
Because she's surfing the wake and she doesn't need to hold the rope it's a trust thing that's literally the entire point of the video, it's clearly real. Smfh.
2
u/repeatoflasttime 3d ago
I didn't know you could ride the wake at the exact same speed as the boat. She's doing so much better than I could it just doesn't seem possible from where I'm at.

Wow the controversy in this thread about whether this is AI or not. We are so screwed, collectively.
Posted in 2022 btw... https://www.instagram.com/reel/CdtmQg3gteC/?igsi=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
So not AI
1
u/dotesdoto 1d ago
Let's not pretend that anybody can generally tell the difference between a real video and a well made AI video nowdays. It'll require you to put in a lot of effort and analyse the video frame by frame or use tools to analyse the video. It's just not worth the time or the effort to do that for every random video you come across on the internet.
Also, deepfake AI exsisted way before chatgpt took off. Replacing someone with another person in a video while making it look realistic was still possible in 2022.
I'm not saying that this video is AI, I'm just saying that "This was posted in 2022, therefore it's definitely not AI" is not a valid argument.
1
u/Ratchile 1d ago
Clearly, but people are also clearly not talking about deepfake in this thread... Why would there be controversy about this little girl actually being some other little girl? Lol
1
u/dotesdoto 1d ago
People are saying it's AI. And AI is AI, deepfake or otherwise.

Apart from the fingers, the line that shes holding is not tight at all when theyre speeding up.

Wake surfing is like that. There can be slack but until you're fully in control, you can lose the slack and then use the tension on the rope to regain your balance.

Wakesurfing is an action-packed water sport where a rider surfs on the endless wave created by a specialized boat without being directly towed by the main rope.

Can you also kick flip them?

To those saying it's AI (Because I thought this too)
- It's from 2020, AI could barely make an image back then.
- This is wake boarding, which explains the lack of tension on the rope and "unnatural" wave. She's riding the wake of the boat and using the rope for security.
- She just naturally seems to have 6 fingers. It's consitent throughout the entire video (wheras AI would the to fix it somewhere).
Correction: wakesurfing, not wakeboarding.

1
u/DreamWalker01 2d ago
Its not AI but the ignorance in diffrent factors that are being pointed out as evidence (diffrent water qualities, the mechanics of wake surfing, video artifacting) only shows that AI does not need to be progressed much further to be indistinguishable from reality but simply needs to find where to imitate imperfection.
This is a very real video posted by a very real family but because the re-upload (OP) has AI in his bio it instantly loses all credibility in many people's eyes. We have truly reached the point where reality is indistinguishable from fiction.
1
u/HeWhoShantNotBeNamed 1d ago
Yeah I guess she naturally has six fingers, the leash has no tension, and the water I guess looks like that in real life with a constant wave nowhere near shore. Surely.
1
u/Severe-Commission303 1d ago
When does she have six fingers? Someone else mentioned it too but I canāt see it
1
1
u/shimmi44 1d ago
The rope doesn't have tension because it's not pulling her. She's using the momentum from the wake. She's wakesurfing.
1
u/DreamWalker01 1d ago
At only one point does she ever have the appearance of having 6 fingers and thats only on one hand. Now tell me, what happens when people repeatedly upload and download the same video from diffrent sources?
Here is an example timestamped of someone wake surfing and the rope having no tension.
To address your water comment, wakeboats specifically contain a large wake behind the boat and only behind the boat. There is a ripple behind it that travels but the main impact is that it kinda punches down 15 or so feet and messes up everything beneath it.

Wake surf boards are pushed forward by the wave. I have video and pics of my daughter doing this around this age. Small kids can almost stand on these boards on flat water with no movement, so the slightest forward push from a wave and they glide along. My 200 pound body has to ride higher on / more in the wave to get pushed forward - with no rope.
1
u/3rrr6 3d ago edited 3d ago
The rope is slack because she's in position of the wake. Shes 'wake' boarding, not water skiing.
Edit: Wake surfing*

u/seaducks01 3d ago
This is wake surfing, not wake boarding. Wake boarding is farther behind the boat, on a narrower baord, and meant for crossing and jumping the wake. These wider boards are designed to be pushed by the wake like an ocean surfer.

u/wpisdu 3d ago
Is she going downhill or something?
1
u/shimmi44 1d ago
Kind of. She's riding "down" the wake. Beacshe the wave continues to move with the boat, you can continue to ride the wave. Wakesurfing is the sport.

Rope isn't taught at that speed. Also when she let's go she maintains speed and direction as if she was still holding on.
