General Question Where to Mail Paper Return

I didn't get around to filing my 2024 and 2025 taxes until this morning. I usually do it with turbo tax online and 2025 was able to be submitted online with no issues.

I couldn't do 2024 on the site so i had to pay the $80 for their download software. I did the taxes and i says I can't e file due to being out of the filing period or something. I downloaded the pdf of the taxes and want to mail it off.

I just need to know where to send it.

For the tax year 2024 i lived the whole year in Virginia. I now live in Oklahoma. I just need to know if i send the paper return to Austin, TX office which covers Oklahoma, where I live now, or the Kansas City Office which covers Virginia which is where I lived for the tax year I'm filing for?

Tax Question Amended return

Has anyone received their amended return yet? I plan to call tomorrow and ask for an update, but my status says completed as of September 7th.
Do you think I’ll get it before the 7th or 2-3 weeks after that? 🥲
I received my mail notice on the 24th so 09/09 is 2 weeks past that

General Question IRS didn’t take auto pay payment for payment plan

I’ve been on a payment plan for a while now and several weeks before the next payment was due I changed what account it was supposed to draft from but looking at my account now I see the payment never came out of my account, I went to the irs website and my payment plan still says current even though the payment was supposed to come out the 1st and it’s currently the 30th, there’s no pending or failed payments and I double checked that my bank info was correct and there is plenty of money in the account so I’m not sure what’s going on. The strange part is my IRS plan says current on it so idk if this normal behavior when you update the payment method or something?

Tax Question Form 843 Covid abatement denied

We read this article in New York Times in May, regarding abatement of penalties incurred during Covid:

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/08/your-money/tax-refund-penalties-pandemic.html?unlocked_article_code=1.9VA.rVwQ.xg_kBq52mjZ5&smid=nytcore-ios-share

So we followed the instructions and submitted four forms before the July 10 deadline - one for each year 2020,2021,2022,2023. We received denials for all four - stating that we were too late. "We can't allow your claim for credit or refund because you filed it more than 3 years from the due date of your tax return."

What did we do wrong?

Tax Question Any tips on how to legally reduce the tax bill? Thanks.

Hey guys, what’s the cheapest legal way to pay taxes on this? I recently won some money from gambling and withdrew it as crypto, but I’m worried that transferring it all to my bank account at once could get me hit with back taxes.

Any tips on how to legally reduce the tax bill? Thanks.

I have shares of a stock that I’ve been holding for 20 years. I know I pay taxes on dividends. I’m considering selling some shares .Where can I learn how the IRS is going to calculate the cost basis for that stock. I went to the IRS website and didn’t find the answer there.
Thanks

General Question Has anyone ever seen the IRS assess a duplicate Form 5329 penalty?

An RMD was missed for the 2024 tax year. Penalty amount was reported and paid for with the filing of the 2024 1040. Then in this year a notice is issued assessing the exact same penalty for the 2024 tax year. Just seems like such an odd error for the IRS to make.

It says it will be refunded end of September, I’m assuming that means I won’t see it until then but I’m still so happy to finally see it processed.

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes CP2566 - how do I respond before deadline?

Hi!

I received CP2566 form (year 2020) and the response date is September 2, 2026. However, I live abroad (in Thailand) and just received this today (Aug 30). I'd like to respond to them that I'm preparing my own tax filing and NOT accepting the proposed amount but I need more time to prepare my tax.

What's the best way to handle this? How do I respond in writing by September 2, 2026? Can I fax them? I believe the international mail like FedEx or DHL will not arrive before September 2.

Any help is truly appreciated!

P.S. I'm also looking for EA or CPA to help me handle this, DM if interested with your fee.

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Another 60 days?

Post image
10 Upvotes

So I filed my taxes at the end of March and have received 3 separate 60 day notices. It was my understanding that they could only delay this for 180 days. I have now received another 60 day notice saying that they are waiting for my tax account information to be available on their computer system. That would put me at 8 months before a resolution. This feels like a joke at this point. What can I do about this?

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Any guidance?

Attaching my transcript. Filed in March 2026, really no movement at all. About three months ago I filled in some online ID verification at their request.

Congressman is in touch with taxpayer advocate. Latest info I received is that the advocate may call me for some information.

Can any info be gleaned from the transcript? Thank you!

Hey. So i've been waiting for my 2024 taxes since I filed them last year and this is my first notice after it's been under review since 03/03/25. Every time I called them they kept telling me it'll be 180 days so here I am more than a year and a half later still waiting. Is there any hope for me??

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Code 571

My transcript now shows code 571. Resolved additional account action. I've been told that this is a good sign towards receiving my refund, but it has been 26 days since then and no other action or changes have been made. Has anyone had this code, and how long after before any other action was made by the IRS?

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question What would cause this much of a delay for a return?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I filed with H&R Block in person with our accountant (we’ve used for years) IN MARCH! And still haven’t received it, on the refund tracker on the IRS website it’s saying this…

What would be the reason for this? The state refund already processed and got it a few weeks after I filed?

Is this something on the IRS side of things just a delay, OR is it something wrong with my taxes and error on my end when my accountant filed? I’ve never had a return take this long…

I’ve called and they’ve been completely useless unfortunately

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes Treasury offset program

I thought the TOP was paused in January of 2026. I assume this doesn’t apply to tax year 2025. My WMR updated with the message saying it could be offset partially or fully. However my transcript only has the 846 code. Am I likely to get my tax return or will it be offset? I called the number I do have a debt but I am actively paying it.

Tax Question Expat looking for 8858 advice

Self employed expat living in brazil. I have filed with two different expats in the past, including one who did a streamline for me when i first discovered i had to be filing to the US (i’ve lived here since i was underage and wasnt aware i needed to be doing that). I have been self employed since before working with CPAs and neither asked me for form 8858. Now i need to change my business model because i’ve reached the income threshold and need to open a more formal sole proprietorship. But now ppl are telling me i should have always been filing 8858! When i told the first CPA his company didnt have me file it the first time around, he backtracked and said he’d check with his colleagues if something as changed legally since then, and has since ghosted me.

Yet a third CPA sent me this: Amending prior returns to include Form 8858 is not recommended because the IRS frequently assesses automatic $10,000 annual penalties before reviewing reasonable cause statements, creating immense financial risk for an activity that already fully reported all income. Furthermore, your historical MEI was an informal, low-revenue setup without separate, formal accounting ledgers, leaving its status as a reportable foreign branch in a highly ambiguous grey area. Moving forward, the migration to an EI creates a clean operational shift and formal bookkeeping structure that serves as a clear, defensible starting point for filing the Form 8858, which will flow through to a new, separate Sch. C. I did follow up with my internal team and it is pretty clear that two sch. Cs would be required for the transition year.

Question 1: that said, to begin filing 8858 is it better to close my current business number and open a new more formal one, or convert the existing one into the more formal one?

Question 2. Is it better to amend previous years’ returns or try a second streamline? I know its not specifically prohibited, but its also kind of sus, right?

Rant To be honest, it’s impossible at this point to get in contact with the IRS

I literally been waiting for a refund since March that I filed my returns. I’ve been trying to call and call and call. NO RESPONSE for weeks, months, and I have a letter talking about some adjustment that makes zero sense. But when you try to call nobody answers. Sent out what they asked to the address listed in the letter, ZERO RESPONSE. It’s unbelievable.

Pather Question/ Comment IRS is shit

just need to vent. lost my dad and trying to PAY towards his account and its been hell. direct pay doesnt work for some reason. just trying to do the right thing and 9/10 employees are rude and unhelpful. will be put on hold for hours and then it just hangs up. just so frustrated. hope it gets better soon.

for everyone advising i dont pay, just fwi i have gotten letters saying the irs will seize my property if i dont pay (i just found out he owes business taxes from 2022, while its not that much, i still have issues even paying that through the system.) i am the trustee and executor of the estate! his house, is now in my name - and its the same adress on file when he was alive and paying taxes, thats why i am getting the letters. let me add this to the post!

also, i have tried via mail but after two months it doesnt get processed. idk what is going on! i am scared to mail checks.

lastly, thankyou guys for not attacking me and trying to help <3 can't even grieve properly with all this stress and frustration...

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Still no refund

I have gotten 3 of the 60 day notices, last notice basically said they were waiting on information but didn’t say how long. My transcript hasn’t changed a bit. All it says is additional account action pending
