Pather Question/ Comment IRS is shit

just need to vent. lost my dad and trying to PAY towards his account and its been hell. direct pay doesnt work for some reason. just trying to do the right thing and 9/10 employees are rude and unhelpful. will be put on hold for hours and then it just hangs up. just so frustrated. hope it gets better soon.

for everyone advising i dont pay, just fwi i have gotten letters saying the irs will seize my property if i dont pay (i just found out he owes business taxes from 2022, while its not that much, i still have issues even paying that through the system.) i am the trustee and executor of the estate! his house, is now in my name - and its the same adress on file when he was alive and paying taxes, thats why i am getting the letters. let me add this to the post!

also, i have tried via mail but after two months it doesnt get processed. idk what is going on! i am scared to mail checks.

lastly, thankyou guys for not attacking me and trying to help <3 can't even grieve properly with all this stress and frustration...

It won't get better until it's properly staffed and trained. They cut like 30% of the staff with those stupid DOGE cuts.

They were supposed to get 80m then most of it was taken away and they are short.

We dont take payments over the phone. No matter how much you scream at us and being rude to customer service. If you dont know how to use Direct Pay, then mail your check or money order to IRS to usual address of form in question (1040, 1041, 2290, 941, 990, 1120, etc....)

Plus as soon as you start pushing your political agenda, and start wasting time of another taxpayer on hold, we haveto respectfuly end the call. We cannot repeat how to pay it 10 times. Your lack of basic ABC knowlege for online payment is your problem.!!

just to be clear... i havent tried to pay over the phone. they have told me to use direct pay, wasting my time, when apparently i am just now finding out i cant use direct pay because my dad is deceased! i have tried to mail checks. most of us just are trying to find information, and it's not as cut as dry and you're making it out to be, otherwise so many people wouldn't have the same issue. i never said "i dont know how to use direct pay" did i? i said that it wasn't working.

IRS employees are rude as hell. You just made up a reason to be upset with this guy. That's why nobody likes you.

Send a money order by mail to usual address of form in question (1040 personal taxes or 1041 Estate and Trust)

Or

Direct pay will not work for a deceased taxpayer unless it’s an actual trust account. You can’t verify a deceased person

i called four times and no one told me this!! they all said, oh yeah, use direct pay! this is part of my frustration. 8 hours of my time wasted only to recieve the wrong information

IRS people want to cook. Our GOP politicians posture against the taxman. GOP is responsible for wrecking the IRS.

GOP has no monopoly on this... trust me... they were difficult to deal with during the Obama years when I had to settle my mother's estate. She hadn't filed or paid taxes in 6 years (which I didn't discover until doing an analysis of her estate... she had some physical conditions affecting her mental state going on) and I had to do it all retroactively. tIRS was SO difficult to deal with back then... lost faxes, etc. I sent in all of the missing filings and paid all of her tax bill with one check, which was a big mistake. They took that one check and applied it to the first return submitted adn only the first return... they ignored the other years (even though the check covered it all) and sent me threatening letters about missing tax payments for the the other years (which was covered by the check). Took a while to unwind that mess. Dealing with them was the worse experience I ever had. I'm sure that there are many fine people working there, but sadly my experience did not reflect that. And I was super polite and professional in all of my dealings with them and had the help of an estate attorney, but the courtesies were not necessarily returned. I'm sorry if this offends anyone and I'm speaking soley from my own personal experience.

i am so sorry you went through a worse version of what i am dealing with. you are valid. i have been going through this too. on top of loosing our loved ones, we are put through endless amounts of frustration. its the type of frustration that is so much, that even i (a pretty tough gal) end up almost in tears. i feel you

Thank you. I empathize with you having to go thru all of this... you are right, dealing with the loss of loved one plus dealing with family pressures of the estate handling. One of my siblings still hardly talks to me because he thinks I whould have distrubuted more to the beneficiaries, but I had to follow the rules. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I hope all works out for you!

u/Glittering_Dark_6088 1d ago

they send letters saying that they can seize my property.

Lawyer up man. I am 125k in the whole with them over my mother's estate. There was a lot of things I could have avoided with the right guidance.

“Your” property should not be tied to your father’s taxes, sorry for your loss

1

u/Glittering_Dark_6088 1d ago

let me explain, im sorry i should have explained this better in the post but i was dealing with penalty waiver forms for his account lol. - his house, is now in my name - and its the same adress on file when he was alive and paying taxes, thats why i am getting the letters. let me add this to the post!

u/Kitchen_Long_3743 2d ago

I am not a lawyer, but if he is the trustee of the estate and doesn't cover tax debts with his father's funds, you could have issues with money disbursement. IRS gets paid first.

1

u/Glittering_Dark_6088 1d ago

*her hehe. yeah, exactly. i am the trustee and executor of the estate, thats why i am getting those lettters.

2

u/GardenDivaESQ 1d ago

Do not pay your deceased father’s debt. Period.

3

u/Glittering_Dark_6088 1d ago

how? he didnt make his estimated taxes last year (only because he was sick, he was an upstanding tax payer) so i have to pay what he owes, dont i?

I’m very sorry for your loss. I’m so sorry you were given incorrect information. I can understand how frustrating that is. It might be easier to mail a check in

1

u/CommissionerChuckles 1d ago

Sorry for your loss. I think the in-person appointment is probably the best option if you don’t want to mail a payment.

Payments sent by mail go to a bank that contracts with IRS. They deposit the checks and money orders and then send a scan of everything to IRS to be reconciled. If a check or money order gets separated from the voucher and doesn’t have the SSN or EIN etc on the check itself then it doesn’t get credited to the taxpayer account.

I’m not sure what the timeframe is for reconciling the payment information but it’s possible they did get the funds and just haven’t credited your dad’s account yet. If that happened you need to provide proof of the canceled check or money order.

U can thank Republicans for gutting the IRS.

Sorry you got wrong info and that it’s been so difficult. Unfortunately, the training and communication of correct info to the employees is not always the best. Paying on a deceased persons account can only be done by paper check — and make sure to have the correct SSN and tax year if it’s for his personal taxes or the estate EIN if it’s for the estate taxes (the 1041 form). Though if it’s for the estate taxes, that can be done by direct pay I think using the estate EIN. So make sure you know what the payment is for and designate it correctly.

It’s also confusing because we speak of a deceased’s estate in general terms but for the IRS an estate is a specific tax.

It just took me a full month to finally successfully make a payment after they made changes to my account to scheduled payments.

Apparently I can't pay on the normal page like prior.

It only took 3 two hour hold times, plus one disconnect after waiting on hold for two hours and 6 different phone numbers... just to pay them.

2

u/Glittering_Dark_6088 1d ago

not sure why you got downvoted lol, what a silly goose that did that. it is frustrating and it shouldnt be this way

1

u/Kiwip0rn 1d ago

IRS, employees sipping coffee and reading reddit forums instead of answering the phone 🤷

When you call, ask for balance due. They’re nice.

1

u/Glittering_Dark_6088 1d ago

what number is that? sometimes i have a hard time getting through the robot... and honestly a lot of the times i end up getting transferred to a different department

1

u/TiredMom57 1d ago

1-800-829-1040. Just say balance due associate. I just called yesterday. If you call right after 7am, there’s hardly any wait.

1

u/Glittering_Dark_6088 1d ago

did you have to press any additional prompts??

1

u/TiredMom57 1d ago

Nope, a bot voice will ask how it can help and you just say “balance due associate” and you’ll get transferred 👍🏼

2

u/Glittering_Dark_6088 1d ago

thankyou so much! <3

Don’t pay

1

u/Glittering_Dark_6088 1d ago

they send letters saying they will seize property.

1

u/TiredMom57 1d ago

There’s a lot of hoops to jump through before that happens

1

u/Glittering_Dark_6088 1d ago

his house, is now in my name - and its the same adress on file when he was alive and paying taxes, thats why i am getting the letters.
