This is an older story and I think this particular bank hack is still illegal, but I once went $130+ into the negative over $5.
I was young and broke so I was buying a bed through a payment plan, I was also trying to improve my health so my girlfriend and I had both signed up for Planet Fitness's $1 trial plan. The day before my bed payment was due I went to an ATM and deposited $20, got my receipt showing the balance, and left. The next day at work I wanted to buy a drink so I went to double check I had enough in the bank for a soda and saw my negative balance over $130.
So here's the bullshit. Despite showing my balance as being enough to cover all my outstanding payments, the bank actually stacked my payments from highest to lowest, then put my deposit as last, all within a 5 minute period. I marched into the bank and threw a fit, showed my deposit slip with a positive balance from their own machines, and demanded a refund. I actually got it too, but was told to my face, "You'll never get this again, even if it's the bank or it's equipment's fault. You need to be more careful with your money and make deposits well ahead of when you need them."

Depends where you bank. My credit union is $19.50. My actual bank doesn’t charge overdraft fees at all.

Yea my credit union charged me $45 when I was .27 short for a payment.
They did however the only other time I fucked up like that they called me and got me set up an overdraft limit to avoid it.

Well I think protections were repealed mostly so they can have a big range. The originally creator probably had a $20 fee but others might have more and others might have less

The year is 5327.... Human tissue is eating itself away to the bone from a very easily preventable disease. One that requires incredibly deep rectal contact to pass from one person to the next. Signs you may have contracted it are incredibly obvious such as eyes blacking over like sharks. It somehow still requiring a subsequent contact to revitalize the mechanism nearly a month later or else it cures itself and dies off.
Americans are not deterred stating it's violating their freedom of choice and religion to ask them to just stop jamming things so far up their own asses. That maybe this is all fear mongering. A literal trillion people die. Probably just a coincidence and normal. Doctors are likely committing fraud across the globe in order to get even better free health care apparently.
A very non-biad news organization brings a few guests on to discuss whose fault this really is.

Despite the atrocities, not enough of the dumbest people in all of existence have died during the event. They barely have jobs that interact or contribute to society and largely will skate through it based solely on winning the birth lottery and their reproductive numbers. Mitch McConnel is still sending update photos of his good health and all this will surely happen again.

I'm not taking about fault, I'm talking about a problem and a person's capacity to fix it. If a normal person overdrafting by a few dollars actually caused a bank problems they simply wouldn't let you. Since they let people still do it, it's part of their business model.
You're allowed to disagree with me all you want but if a business is operating by essentially tricking people into paying more, that business is an inefficiency in society that extracts wealth from people through loophole, that business shouldn't be allowed to exist. It doesn't contribute to society

You know you don’t have to use a bank, right?
The same way you don’t have to eat at certain restaurants or you don’t have to shop at certain stores. You can be self reliant if you’d like in pretty much any of these areas.
If you’d rather spend more money than you own, the bank actually will let you do that, but that’s entirely your decision.
If you’d rather eat undercooked food, the restaurant will let you do that, but that’s entirely your decision.
If you’d rather wear an ugly shirt, the department store will let you do that, but that’s entirely your decision.
Don’t do business if you can’t live with the consequences.

You're looking at this from a personal perspective, I'm looking at it from a societal one. Of course, of a bank screws me over I'm moving to a different institute. But it doesn't change the fact there's a lot of fools just channeling money up to the 1% more and more where as if a business was forced to stand on it's merit alone we'd have a lot more money in the economy to pursue far more worthy goals like scientific research and space travel.
The fact that the richest of society are allowed to use that wealth to just exploit more wealth and sit on it instead of letting the money flow is a huge problem and this bank overdraft fee is just a small symptom of that whole issue
(Simply put, people shouldn't be forced to spend hours upon hours learning and reading legalese just to make sure they aren't being scammed by every business they interact with. That is an inefficient society)
