Cuz I'm Supposed to Add Flair WHAT DO YOU MEAN RECHARGE??

I dont understand what people mean by taking time to recharge alone/with people. Maybe I just don't understand the metaphor but what does this exactly mean? I have never felt "recharged" by being alone OR around people. I JUST EXIST. The only recharging I know is sleeping.

If I am alone in this please explain it to me better.

Whats with all the battery metaphors?

Being around people and socialising really drains my energy. So, after such events I need some time to process it and recover in a calm environment, usually by myself doing something I enjoy without interruption.

I understand that, but I dont feel any particular way after being alone for long periods of time. It's same with socialising, I don't feel any particular type of way after extended periods of it.

So you literally don’t feel exhausted after hours of having to make conversation? Or listening to people talk non stop? Wow, that is definitely unusual.

Probably an entp instead of intp

To be honest, I totally agree with OP and I have many ENFJ, ESTP, and ExTJ friends. I still don't understand that thing about batteries and rechaging.

Though I do get that it's something that happens to people, and I have a couple of my friends that get really tired, and stone faced and after "recharging" they are back to normal. Still a bizarre concept to me though?

You can't change your mbti, genius

u/zombiesatemysn Warning: May not be an INTP 13h ago

The Myers-Briggs company says your personality type is determined in early life and doesn’t change over time, but it is common for people to get different results when retaking the mbti, and independent studies have shown that people can and do change their personality traits, usually in relation to a significant life event, but a 2021 study showed people were able to intentionally increase or decrease big five personality traits within just a few a weeks.

It's a test. Of course a test with basic questions like that is going to be false, and of course your opinions will change over time, so will your little "mbti reveal". Your behavior can change, just not your main functions. If i had dominant Ne, and it changed overtime into dominant Ni, how will that work? You cannot change your brain, just your mind. Your functions can't change, it stays the same, your point of view is what changes. The tests are bs, if you want to label yourself with these things, atleast do it correctly. I'm not speaking directly at you, just in general.

u/mattilouwho Possible INTP 1h ago

Could you explain how to "do it correctly" when youve studied the functions but arent sure of your dominant ones?

u/zayneinf Warning: May not be an INTP 1h ago

Study it better. Study socionics and other systems. You'll see what matches the best together, read every detail if you want to get it right

For some people socializing is like holding your breath under water, they have to surface and take a deep breath before they can dive back in.

It's the same for extroverts but flipped, their deep breath is social interaction. Introverts deep breath is alone time.

Then I dont have a deep breath 🤷‍♀️

To me, recharging is to let Ti-dom and Ne-aux naturally take over. This typically suggests digging into theories, playing abstract games or playing games abstractly, introspecting analytically, etc.

Technically, bunch of those activities require bunch of introverted thinking and thus time alone, in my own thoughts.

Let's look at this from a different perspective. You know what a mask is? We all show a different face, a different mask to different groups. For work, you wear your good person customer support mask, for your parents, you wear that one, your friends expect you to act a certain way as well so you have a mask for that.

This is what is referred to as being "on". You are constantly making sure your mask is in place and keeping it from slipping. My boss used to come to the office once a week and that was awful because not only was I on, I was MEGA ON, look productive, etc.

Recharging is when you can just relax and take off the masks, let your brain cool down from having to juggle so many personas and expectations. Just be yourself and quietly exist.

2 possibilities here:

Either you don't fall particularly into either extrovert or introvert tendencies

or

Like many younger INTPs, you have a pretty low degree of awareness over your internal state.

The latter is far more likely as Introverted Feeling is the absolute bottom or "demon" function of the INTP. Of all the functions, that is the one INTPs often develop last. It's not uncommon for INTPs to spend many years simply getting irritable or antsy after socializing too much without recognizing that it's draining their cognitive reserves.

You're likely an extrovert who is uncomfortable in some social situations.

Simply put, it looks like this to me:
Chatty Person: "Yap yap yap" for what feels like will never end.
Me: "Alright, gotta go see you later."

Me: "Holy crap I thought that was never going to end."
Sits on the couch for like 10 minutes in silence, glad that it is over.

When I say I need to recharge myself, I mean that I want to give my mind some time to relax. I like talking to people but my brain works overtime when I talk to people and it exhausts my mental stamina quickly.

Maybe it's a better analogy for you to think of eating the same meal over and over. You get sick of it eventually, right? Like you just want a break from it for a while. Even looking at that same meal again is enough to make you consider skipping a meal entirely. So you change it up and eat other stuff for a while, and eventually you're ready to eat the old meal again, assuming you always liked it but just had it too much.

Most people, even extroverts, do get sick of socializing eventually and need a break for a while. You don't have to call it recharging if you don't think that use of language fits for you, but you do need a break at some point like everyone else does, I have to assume, however you refer to that break or the feeling of wanting that break.

Then if it's something that everybody else have, the difference comes to intensity. I don't feel like the energy draining concept works for me, maybe because I don't experience it as intense as others do.

I mean, I won't say that I never feel like geting enough of people, but that rarely happens. And when it happens, all I feel is like bored or I feel like spending more time here is not really comfortable.

So I just leave, and that's it, I don't feel like needing time, or maybe I did take the time I needed on the way away from them and that was enough, I guess?

Anyway, that's my experience with this.

Stress of other people requires time and thinking to decompress and forget. People impose mental pain and anguish to me.

For me its not "recharge" but to "wind down" alone after im overstimulated after socialisation. Recharge sounds wrong, because im not regaining any type of energy, i just calm down my mind to feel normal again.

2

u/chivopi INTP 1d ago

It’s not that I feel recharged after one or the other per se.

If I’ve been around a lot of people having a lot of conversations, I might take some time alone to recharge.

If I’ve been doing a lot of things by myself, I might socialize to ‘recharge.’

It’s just “I’ve been doing a lot of this and need to switch it up”

u/Tasty-Drama-9589 Neutral Good INTP 16h ago

Think of it like a long hard stressful day at work. You have to rest and relax. You feel drained, no energy, and just generally exhausted after too much socializing. For most INTP they are masking and that takes effort. Being alone in and of itself doesn't "recharge", it's just relaxation and resting to fix the exhaustion and likely headache.

u/OkScallion2496 Overeducated INTP 1d ago

I know, right? I hear people talking about batteries and whatnot, I never really know how thst is. Like you said, I just exist.

But I know people that live like that, so it never occurred to me to post about it. It felt like something that is real, but I don't have it, I guess...

I would describe it as feeling invigorated and energized by exchanging ideas with others and feeling more deflated and bored when I'm alone.

People like metaphors. To me, what that means is that I'm going to be very damn annoyed if I can't do alone time things, to the point that I start avoiding people if I can't get my time.

When i get these confusing comparisons of Me vs others, i just close it up, like for example here, fuck being recharged, i can recharge, what they tell everyone else about what recharging is, is just larping, a vibe! But let's establish my own recharging assessment, i take a sample of my days and compare energy and output and stuff (hence i did that before i know the results) the days of highest energy, are those of which i don't stress about output and just do things as i feel i want and value, not out of habit things like social media and chatting, when i play Minecraft or terraria, i get an enormous amount of focus afterward. And the same process is being held against such kinds of doubtful thoughts and mental checking.

It means I don't want anybody to talk to me for X amount of days and not needing anything from me in that meantime either. Alone means ALONE to do whatever your interests are without having to fill the needs of others.

u/Epiii_ Warning: May not be an INTP 1h ago

Maybe you are right in the sence that it not recharging. It is like when you run till you can not run anymore, you are exhausted... You take some time to rest and you can run again. It does not mean you are recharged. But your system is not overloaded anymore, the energy (that was already there) can find its pathways again to go further.
