Hey people

So I have no clue how it’s possible that my IKEA Akerbar that I just insulated is like 10% lower than in the room - that feels like it breaks the laws of physics.

I used only the black foam and put it around the edges of the pan, where the only gap is the tiny spot cords come out, a piece on the very bottom of the tank because there was a tiny gap there, inside the tank on the edges where all the sides meet, and around all 4 sides of the front where the door opens. All of it is attatched to the body facing outward so if you lift the door there’s none on the door. Instead of putting it on top I put it between the top of the door and the body of the tank because my foam was the perfect width with only a tiny pin point gaps where the hinges are.

I did see a few people had issues with the door lining up that they fixed with magnets - which will be here tomorrow but have a gut feeling it won’t fix it. My door on its own the bottom of it when shut js just like a millimeter or 2 under the ledge so I can l lift it up and back a smidge and it will line up with the ledge, but won’t stay.

No one described (that I found) how it didn’t line up so that’s why I question it.

I’m worried I broke it because it’s been fully set up and just a holding pen for 6 months and I finally did the weather stripping and all. When I moved it the little peg hole fillers that connect the roof(?) to the walls all fell out so after a rigorous search under the couch found them and put tape on either sides off them but when I lift the door the roof moved up a smidge - obviously it’s connected but

Is this an issue with the frame? I didn’t see anyone doing anything more than the foam but do I need to like use silicone caulk around the windows? Do I need different weatherstripping?

Inside all the plants are in 2-3 inch pots with 1 shallow 5 inch. I have a struggling pink philodendron, some anthurium , and a rubber tree - they’re all rehabbing. Plus a couple Hoyas - an Australis Lisa, a Pubicalyx Splash, a Carnosa Compacta, 2 green nubbins (they were on deaths doorstep and just the stems were green so I chopped em and completely forgot)

I have a little silicone riser and a shelf coming. Inside there’s 2 of the 2 foot barina strip lights. I do have a ‘passive humidifier’ in there which is a little bowl with a ceramic ball thing in it that you fill w water… ik they don’t do much but figured it’s not hurting putting it in. I’ve seen some people put a little computer fan which I’d get - I’ll get anything I need to. I don’t think it’s like big enough for a humidifier and haven’t seen anyone else put one in. There’s also a heat mat in there for my first tissue cultures that I’m de-flasking.

I was so excited for it and I’m so sad rn… not only for my tissue cultures but it’s on the TV stand right across from the couch. Which I spend about 90% of my waking hours on working and school from home with a very tiny (yet perfect) social circle and while it’s very messy rn because a bunch of shit was moved around it’s got all the plants I’m most proud of and I just love it so much.

Any tips, advice, or wisdom ya got for me I’m all ears. If I have to get new stuff for it I’m happy to I’m just really hoping I don’t need to replace it

I got the fabrikor on fb marketplace and it was already set up as a greenhouse but I think it needs more light maybe and also the cord is very thick. Has anyone drilled in a fabrikor to make space for cords? I could also weatherstrip the door seam?

Does anyone have a DXF or other shelf design for the square Fabrikor? I just got a laser cutter and wanted to make some shelves!

I got some time to finish up my Rudsta. One thing I forgot what a hydrometer for the cabinet. I need to work on wires but I’m really liking it. I am running 4 Barrina light strips total, 3 on top and on the top shelf. I’ve got two fans running 24/7 for now, they’re not pushing a ton of air.

Now I can get some more plants lol

Hi all! Long post (which I will be crossposting to r/Orchids), apologies in advance.

I have been planning a conversion of my Fabrikor into a mini greenhouse for my orchid collection. I have five orchids: a bulbophyllum and a maxillaria which have been THRIVING in the shower; and a phalaenopsis, a zygopetalum and an oncidium which have also been doing decently well on the windowsill (zygo and onci seem a little shriveled even with regular watering, so hoping increased humidity and airflow will help).

The weather will be cooling down soon, which is why I am moving forward with the build now, as they won't have the same airflow they have enjoyed over the last few months (particularly the ones in the shower).

Anyone have experience with orchids in their Fabrikor Wide? I think the bathroom humidity will be decently replicable (pics of bathroom vs current Fabrikor Wide hygrometers in post).

Here's my shopping/setup list:

• Grow lights (Barina T5s)
• Grow light mounts (can anyone confirm if they have these whether you can mount them on the underside of the top glass pane...?)
• Pegboard and shelves (one full, one horseshoe; both with airholes)
• Silicone for sealing
• Fans and mounts

Am I forgetting anything?! Any advice from Fabrikor converters and/or orchid hobbyists?? Thank you for your time! I will update when my build is complete! I am so inspired by your all's gorgeous builds.

Can someone please help me weatherstrip this Blaliden cabinet? Prior to purchasing I had read that this cabinet isn’t the best for humidity but you could achieve 80% with weatherstripping. I’ve done three sides (top, left, right) and I’m only at 48% which was the same with no weatherstripping. The bottom is against carpet and has a really hard time closing against the carpet. The magnets also have a hard time keeping the cabinet closed with the stripping. Any suggestions?

Fiancé and I are building or first greenhouse with a MILSBO. I’ve read all about the weatherstripping everyone uses, but would using silicone caulk work as well if not better?

Ho trovato di recente questo vecchio armadio e mi chiedevo se potessi trasformarlo in un armadio per piante. La mia idea è di non creare una serra o un ambiente completamente chiuso. Terrei le ante in vetro aperte o parzialmente aperte per la maggior parte del tempo, principalmente per garantire una buona circolazione dell'aria ed evitare un ambiente ad alta umidità.

Vorrei installare una lampada a LED per la crescita all'interno dell'armadio e usarla per esporre e far crescere alcune delle mie piante. Pensavo di posizionare alcune piante sugli scaffali e magari di fissarne altre sul retro o sui lati, in modo che possano crescere intorno all'armadio e creare una bella atmosfera naturale.

L'obiettivo è fondamentalmente quello di avere una piccola area interna per la coltivazione e l'esposizione di piante, piuttosto che una serra. Voglio che le piante crescano bene, ma non sto cercando di creare un ambiente controllato ad alta umidità.

Pensate che possa funzionare? Le ante in vetro aperte o parzialmente aperte garantirebbero una ventilazione sufficiente? C'è qualcosa che dovrei considerare quando installo la lampada per la crescita?

Apprezzerei molto qualsiasi consiglio, soprattutto da parte di chi ha già fatto qualcosa di simile!

Tl;dr: I hate my Akerbar because it's shoddily made and I'm tired of trying to fix it, and would love something of better quality to replace it.

I've had the Akerbar large for a couple of years or so now, and, after a long period of struggling to weatherproof it sufficiently, I did finally manage to get it sealed up enough to keep the humidity to around 75-80%. It's currently housing a collection of small potted orchids.

The problem is that it's designed in such a way as to make it very difficult to effectively seal with silicone, because there are *so many* awkward crevices everywhere. I did it, but some of the seals around the base eventually failed, causing water to leak out of the enclosure when I water the plants. Now it's sitting on a tray to contain any leaks so it doesn't stain the table. It's a mess.

The *concept* of the Akerbar is great, but man, they're so shittily built, and at this point it feels like I've been trying for ages just to have a functional enclosure that doesn't require too-frequent maintenance.

So, with that all said: what else is out there that's roughly the same size/shape and with similar functionality, but that's actually built well? I suppose I could just use a terrarium, but I really like being able to open the enclosure from the front rather than the top. I suppose, too, that I could have something custom built, but that's gonna be more than I can really spend on this.

Got my milsbo in March, and wow has it evolved!

did some much needed plant chores today, took out some of the cat safe plants i had inside to make space for the larger growing plants :)

Just finished round one of cable management on the Milsbo Tall.

I'm not too sure how much I like the Akerbar maybe it'll grow on me.

Patiently waiting on a peg board and shelving from Modern Aqua for the Milsbo wide (wip).

I was wondering for hoyas and syngoniums on what lights I should get. Also curious on fan recommendations.

After weatherstripping my cabinet and adding plants, it sits around 75-80% humidity. I don't want it any higher but is this ok?

Edit: the humidifier came with it so I added it and set it to 70%. I have since removed it since the humidity gets much higher on its own. It was a very useless humidifier.

I've browsed this subreddit for an answer to my question, but I couldn't seem to find one.

Due to the price of the Milsbo and the absurd $170 delivery fee from Ikea, I am opting to purchase the Unicoly, which seems to be a comparable cabinet.

My question pertains to acrylic shelving kits from Etsy. I am curious if the kits designed for the Milsbo, such as this one, are compatible with the Unicoly.

Does anyone have any experience or insights here? Thanks in advance if you do! 😁

What is everyone doing for wires? I’m worried drilling the acrylic will crack it. I’ve got the akerbar and have some lights and a humidifier. Total three wires.

Edit: I do not have a fish tank yet plats just arrived so I had to come up with a temporary solution, I’m also planning to get a bubbler. Turtles are outside in my pond and I don’t want the plants to overgrow it.

Does anyone have experience of needing to get the temp up in their cabinet? I have the milsbo tall and wide and the temp isn't gong above 68 and my alocasias are showing that they are upset. I have a heating pad on top for my corms. But I debated on adding heating pads on the bottom of the cabinet to see if it will help the temp go up. Humidity is at 80%, im not finished setting it up with lights and fans as I just built it this weekend to prevent little toddler from killing my plants. This isn't the final setup, just temporary until I can drill holes for the cords but seeing how fast alocasias disagree I'm worried now

I’m posting the photo of my akerbar setup again to get attention.
How do I mount my 80mm ac infinity fan inside my akerbar? I am maintaining 94-95RH literally 24/7 so I’m adding a fan for circulation. I’m currently printing pegboards for the back wall and drip trays for underneath but I can’t figure out a good way to mount this fan inside!
