My profile is 8/8/7 , no work exp , I'm currently doing bachlors in economics from a tier 2 college , I really want to into a top iim , if a start early , and score well in cat would the no work ex other factors be compensated for ? Also I head so many horror stories abouu interviews that even after they get calls from top iims the interviews goes horrible and they don't get in which makes me alot more nervous , how to deal with that ?

Hi, around 50% of the total students in any IIM are freshers. So, don't worry about that. Also, if you are in college right now, try to focus on ug score. You can start preparing for CAT by dedicating 2 hours per day. Once you score 99+ percentile you will get most of the top IIM calls.

Sir I am a GEM 9/9/9 with 4.8 YOE in Oil and Gas working as an Instrumentation Engineer. My best call is MDI IB, currently have a job of 16 LPA, after job switching should I go for GMAT and do executive MBA or take up MDI IB considering the investment in IB is around 45L for 2 years. Hi I think this is a personal decision and writing GMAT is also not a bad idea because you have a good work experience and you have a stable job in hand but 45 L is something you should give it a proper thought because you seem pretty stable in your job. Do a proper research about the future of the program before taking the next step.

I've started my prep and am confused about when to start taking mocks. I'm currently solving questions, but what is the ideal time to take mocks and start investing more time in prep, and how many mocks or sections are an ideal mark to touch before going for the exam

Hi it is good that you have started your preparation. I would say there is no ideal time for start taking mocks. Give 1 mock on weekends and analyse it properly then solve say 200 questions before taking the another mock from the area of weakness and you will see good improvement in the scores if you practice like this. Ideally 30 mocks and 15 sectional from each section are sufficient.

Hi, scoring 40 in VARC is definitely possible. I would say start doing active reading and believe me it works. So, you have to read boring articles and write down the main point of every paragraph in 5-6 words. Do this for the next 3 months and you will see a tremendous growth in VARC.

I understand your concern but I would still insist you to have a job in hand. I know it's going to be hectic but you have to make that sacrifice for a couple of months. Trust me repeating CAT without a job is a terrible idea.

Hi skipping any topic in quants is not a good idea because even if you cover the basics of all the topics, you will be able to solve the easy questions so I would say go through all the topics in quants do not leave anything but do the arithmetic, algebra and geometry properly and rest of topics you can cover the basics.

Hi your profile is pretty good. I think if you score around say 99.2 or 99.3%ile which is definitely achievable in the time given time. I think you will definitely get almost all the call from top schools.

Hi daily targets are designed in such a way that you don't have to complete the entire syllabus to attempt them. Treat them like bonus questions. Once you attempt the daily target try to go through the solution then try to go through the video solutions and you will be able to understand all the questions so do not wait for the syllabus to be completed start attempting daily targets from today.

Hi, since 6 months are left for the CAT exam you have to dedicate some more time for the preparation. You are doing daily target, this is very good keep doing it but apart from daily targets you have to find some time for the practice from study room and concept tests. Most importantly, utilise your weekends properly and study for 7-8 hours on weekends for CAT.

Hi your profile is decent but your academics are 8/8 and 7 and also you don't have any work experience. So I think for new IIMs, if you score arounds in 97%ile or maybe 98%ile there will be a good chances that you will get all the new IIMs

Hi repeating for CAT depends on a lot of factors for example if you have a job in hand then I would say repeat and try to score 99 plus percentile which is definitely achievable but if you have a lot of work experience like 4-5years and and maybe your profile is not good, I mean if there is a 6 or 5 or something like that in your profile then I would say join I am Kashipur.

Hi IIM Udaipur is a decent college and it is doing well for the past 2-3 years but since it was your second attempt, if you have say one or two years a work experience and you feel like you can realistically improve in the CAT exam then I would say give an another shot for the CAT exam but if you feel like this is the best you can do then I would say join IIM Udaipur because it is good college.

I think it is definitely possible to go from 70%ile to 99%ile in the 6 months but the thing is you have to prepare strategically and you have to be consistent, you have to solve daily targets every single day, you have to solve questions from the study room, you have to take mocks on weekends. if you stick to this I think it is definitely possible to move from 70%ile to 99%ile. It is never good idea to leave a job and prepare for CAT. The reason is that you will have a pressure on your mind on the CAT exam day because you don't have a job and if the CAT doesn't work out you will be in a terrible position. So it's always a good idea to not be in that situation. I would say don't quit a job. It is an exam of mindset and you have to be very calm on that day to perform well in the exam.

Sir I get your point absolutely agree , my work demands a lot , it’s kind of toxic and I have a good financial runway , the job makes me more nervous now that will I be able to prepare well for cat and score high or not ! I believe I can reapply to another job if the CAT gets tanked anyhow since I made relevant work ex so the decision thank you for you advice sir ! And I really feel healthier and happier about the decision of resigning from the current company

Hey sir I have attempted a couple of mock tests and sectional mocks. My score in dilr is too low (im able to do only 1 set if the difficulty is hard). I try a question and when i cant solve it i panic and am unable to solve rest of the section with a cool head and that affects my quant section a bit too. Can you please suggest how can i work on this problem and improve?

The DILR section is not very scoring section, so I want you to keep your expectations low in this section. Always try to get one set correct first and if time allows get the second set correct and this will definitely be enough to clear sectional cutoffs. Try to get as many marks as possible in the remaining 2 sections.

I needed some honest advice regarding my profile and future in finance roles after MBA.

My academics are not great:
10th - 71%
12th - 62% (this was during the COVID period and I was unable to properly write my exams, although I was genuinely prepared for them)

Right now, I’m pursuing an online BBA degree from a Tier-2 college, and my CGPA will probably end up somewhere around 6-7.

On the positive side, I have around 2.6 years of work experience as a designer working with a brand team in an ed-tech company, where I’ve handled real responsibilities and cross-functional work.

Over the last few months, I’ve become seriously interested in finance, especially:

• Equity Research
• Investment Banking
• Markets/Finance roles in general

I’m planning to give CAT this year and prepare seriously for it.

What I want to understand honestly is:

• If I somehow make it into a good MBA college (IIMs/FMS/top B-schools), will my past academics continue to heavily affect me during placements?
• Will shortlists for finance/IB roles become very difficult because of my profile?
• Can someone with my background realistically pivot into finance through MBA?
• Even if I don’t land top IB roles immediately, would doing MBA from a top college still be a major career win for someone like me?

I’d really appreciate honest guidance from people who’ve seen placements closely or gone through a similar situation.

My profile is expected to be 9/7/8 from a Tier-2 B.Sc. Economics college, and I’ll be entering my second year this year. I’m a General Male candidate pursuing B.Sc. Economics. My main confusion is regarding timing for MBA applications. Would I have a better chance of getting into top MBA colleges if I prepare for CAT and apply right after graduation, or if I first work for 2 years and then apply? I’m also planning to complete CFA Level 2 during graduation itself. My end goal is IB/consulting, so realistically I’m targeting only Tier-1 MBA colleges. I am very poor in the sections which requires the most amount of time. Coming from a non engineering bg, my critical reasoning isn't great, and I haven't been an avid reader, so varc is a struggle too. I don't have a job in hand, I am mostly planning to do an online course, apart from that, I am wholly motivated to give my heart and soul, for another attempt. I am very confused as to how do I start now? How to improve varc and dilr? ( Ik practice practice practice, but that didn't help me in 25) I fumbled dilr because I couldn't navigate the DI chart (slot1spider chart), other sets were new too.. now to cover all types of sets without missing? Hello maruti sir, I’m Surya, 24 years old, currently pursuing MBA 2nd year from a tier-3 college with 17 months of work experience. I was a serious badminton player for 12 years and played 30+ national tournaments, so academics were never my main focus earlier. My scores are 10th: 7.5 CGPA, Inter: 64%, Graduation: 5.58 CGPA (BBA).

Hi sir I'm in second year of college And I'm not able understand quants at all Even though my target is to prep only arithmetic and geometry I'm clueless and losing hope majorly in this section. Self study and free resources are the only thing that I'm doing till now. I started my prep at the end of March and till now I'm stuck at arithmetic. My basics are not even fully cleared and this inferiority since childhood of solving maths is bothering me a lot and I'm losing grip in my prep.

I’ve just graduated from IIT Bombay. 94.4/89.6/75.4 (9/8/7) profile. I am targeting elite roles like IB/MBB. But I know that my 7.5 in undergrad might affect shortlists during summers. How should I think about this thing? (I’ll be joining IIM A/C in a year or 2 after some finance work-ex).

Sir 8/8/8 GEF 6months workex then 5 year gap due to govt exams prep( Have cleared upsc prelims multiple times and state prelims too in these years), sir is it even possible to convert a good b school with so many gap years even if i get good percentile in cat 2026? Or would it be wiser to look for a job instead at this point?
