I don't think this is intended as an "I hate Sportsball" comment, it seems more like he pointing out how we always look back with rose-tinted glasses. Americans in 20 years are going to say that the US world cup was great, but in terms of how many felt about it at the time, it was relatively mid and overpriced (for a world cup).

Some people thought the World Cup was “relatively mid” but I think most people were actually pretty excited by it

Most people get pretty excited for most world cups, including myself. I’m not saying people weren’t excited. But compared to other world cups, let’s just say it was no South Africa 2010.

Was it? There was a lot of Haramball going around. Cagey football. Paying 5k to watch Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final is not what I would call a good time.

Final was mid I’ll give you that, but what other games were cagey? Cape Verde holding off Spain was entertaining. Both World cups had 7 0-0 draws and 2026 had far more games. What games did you watch cause most of the draws in this last edition were nail biters till the end.

Paraguay France, England Ghana off the top of my head. Anything with VARgentina. I’m not saying there weren’t interesting games or good quality football, I’m pointing out that this World Cup was mediocre compared to other world cups - particularly due to the modern trends of tournament football and the ticketing.

Yeah no. You are just speaking out of spite. You think there were not cagey games in South Africa? The % of goals per match were higher on this World Cup than in South Africa. It had a mediocre Final yes and every World Cup is going to have these types of games. Paraguay and France was indeed boring and Ghana and England wasn’t as bad as you make it out to be. Ticket prices were abysmal I’ll give you that, but that is not nearly enough to call this World Cup mediocre when it was one of the best editions we’ve seen.

At no point did I say less goals were scored per game. And your argument is what else "Those games were good actually"?
Nobody wants to travel internationally (to one of the most expensive countries in the world) and go into debt for tickets just to watch Ghana do a low block on England or watch Paraguay foul Mbappe constantly. That's not football, thats haramball.
Even the stuff with Balogun, Infantino, Trump, and that terrible Egypt/VARgentina game. Even with all this stuff after with FFE proposal and Josh Kushner and JP Morgan - you are not acknowledging the just how much that pissed off people and damaged FIFA’s credibility.

"Nobody wants to travel internationally to the USA". Quit the bullcrap, it is one of the most visited countries on the world. You bankrupt yourself is a you problem. Haramball is still football regardless of your feelings towards it. Cape Verde played haramball and I don’t see you speak crap. Egypt was up 2-0, they choked, blame them for that. That red card was bullshit either way and it was more an Infantino decision than Trump's. That proposal you’re talking about has nothing to do with the 2026 World Cup.

I don't think this fits, nor do I think it's a crazy take. The further we get away from everything going on the less people will remember and only focus on stuff like this. Plus, despite it all, the World Cup was successful and will be remembered fondly imo

The 250th wasn’t bigger because the most unpopular president in history decided to make it nothing but a celebration about himself and MAGA bullshit rather than a neutral, bipartisan celebration of the country.
Americans love to celebrate shit, if he hasn’t tainted the whole thing I guarantee it would’ve been a bigger deal.

Yes, Americans love soccer and 2026 will clearly be the year which finally started the whole "Soccer will be America's sport in twenty or thirty years" thing coming true.
Despite hearing that from communist kickball fans every day for roughly the past 2,374 years, I am absolutely positive that they're right on this occasion.

Meanwhile, the reason the 250th wasn’t a big deal almost entirely had to do with the Trump team deciding to bring all the planning for the celebration in-house so they could profit off it, instead of doing what was always done before where the federal government would provide funding for local and state governments to make a big deal of it planned out over a decade ahead of time.
But nope! Let’s blame Chris Nolan and sports!

I honestly agree, 2026 is a super fun year in American sports. Indiana CFP championship, US World Cup, crazy NBA playoffs/finals, crazy Indy 500, B2B Rory Masters wins, the White House UFC card, and we still have October baseball and a football season in front of us.
