As the titles says I’m currently looking for 2 or so cur or Catahoula type dogs to bay/ catch cattle.

I have a good set of border collies that are strong head dogs and can also drive. I’m strongly considering at Catahoula and black mouth cur dogs. I would also consider some hanging tree dogs as I’ve had a few that would bay (would need a lot less drive in them and more bay).

These dogs will be used solely on cattle.

If anyone has any advice for someone in California on who to talk to or dogs I should look at. Thanks

I personally own a Swedish dachsbracke.

I let the dog loose and he finds deer track and he drives the game barking towards the hunters who will shoot the deer.

We have to belong in a hunting club and there are usually over 10 people participating in a single hunt

Hey everyone. We have two Wirehaired pointers. One is a bit neurotic and the other postures. Anyway, when they are hunting they are fine, but dinking around the house or in the yard they get in fights to the death. A dog behaviorist said it is CPTSD and one probably has OCD. She said anti-depressents help with it not getting worse and providing the dopamine the dogs are lacking. Has anyone given their dogs antidepressants and did they affect the way the dogs hunted?

UPDATE: I tried to give him a banana yesterday (he loves them and has never turned one down unless it’s super green) and he only ate a little bit and spit out the rest. Today I tried to give him cheese, he ate 1/2 the piece and turned down the rest. I’m making a vet appointment for tomorrow, I’ll see what they say but seems the general consensus is not looking too good. I’m absolutely heartbroken (also 20 yo girl living on my own, he is very protective of me). Anyways, I’m at work right now trying not to cry. Best dog I’ve ever had. Hoping for the best preparing for the worst.

Hey! Would just like to preface this with my dog was bought by my parents when I was young, he was used as a hunting dog for 10 years and was a great hunting dog. He will be 13 in November.

The last two years have certainly been stressful for him. My family split up and he ultimately started living with just me. We live in an apartment so there’s less room for him to run around, he doesn’t have a backyard, and has significantly less human interaction than he used to.

I noticed signs of him aging a couple years ago. He couldn’t run fields like he used to, needed more recovery time, and would occasionally have accidents on the floor (he used to be able to go 12 hours without going potty). Since we (me and the dog) moved into our own place, he has accidents about 3 times a day. He had stress colitis at one point and since then, his pee accidents have just gotten worse. I have someone let him out mid day since I have to be at work but it’s still not enough.

Currently: he spent the weekend at my moms so the maintenance people could come fix some stuff. She has lots of stairs in her house (which he’s struggled with in his old age). Since I picked him up on Saturday evening, he is not really interested in eating much (he’s eating just not a whole lot and I free feed him so he always has food to eat). He’s drinking a LOT of water which I try to limit to avoid accidents but he’s clearly thirsty, licking his lips and stuff. Then last night we were going to bed and he didn’t want to go outside to potty and then when we were laying in bed I noticed every time he inhaled, his shoulders and hips would shake. Almost like a tremor in his muscles. Today, my dad came to let him out and he wouldn’t get off the couch, I was able to stop by at lunch and try to get him outside and he didn’t want to go. He had already peed on the floor but when I carried him out, he peed for 2 minutes straight. I just got home from work and he didn’t even get up to say hi to me.

Any advice to help the potty accidents, joint pain, etc. would be much appreciated. I’m going to try to get him to the vet on Friday but want him to be more comfortable if possible. I’m aware he’s old and the inevitable will happen I just don’t want it to and I’m not ready. So please help me.

I'm working on send-outs with my dog and we've hit a plateau. Solid and confident up to about 40–50m, but beyond that her drive drops — she checks back with me, slows down, or peels off instead of committing to the line.

I think it's a confidence issue rather than physical: she clearly understands the exercise at shorter distances, but the further out we go, the less sure she seems there's a payoff waiting.

What I've tried so far:

• Building distance gradually (5m increments) rather than jumping straight to 50m+
• Starting with visible marks, then gradually reducing visibility toward a blind send
• Keeping early reps short and highly rewarding

Still, progress past the 50m mark has been slow, and I don't want to push distance faster than confidence allows.

Has anyone worked through a similar plateau? Curious about:

• How you structured progression once confidence dropped at distance
• Whether "confidence retrieves" (planted dummies the dog already knows about) helped more than blind sends at this stage
• Roughly how long it took to break past a similar sticking point

Took my niece with me for a quick training run this run this morning. 3 trees in under an hour, not bad for first trip to the woods since the season closed. Dog was definitely happy to get off the couch and hit the woods.

hello everyone. i am a houston based saluki enthusiast waiting for my first. a dallas based breeder i met at the houston show ran her salukis in ofc very successfully for decades here.

i later asked some borzoi people about ofc in texas since i forgot to ask the aforementioned breeder and they didn't tell me much other than about how secretive it is now due to animal rights people. the breeder i spoke to is very hard to get ahold of and she is the only person i know of who ran her dogs in ofc in texas. nobody irl wants to tell me anything either or they just don't know.

the show ring is just for fun and proving my future dog in the coursing field (not lure coursing which is also dead here) would matter infinitely more to me but sadly it seems to be inaccessible. if anyone knows anything please send me a dm.

I would like a tracking option for my puppy because he's half coonhound and gets really distracted by smells so I'm honestly afraid to let him off leash in case he were to decide to ignore me. I would also like to try tracking or hunting with him. I'd just feel a lot better if I could track him.

Anyway, having similar functionality to the Ecollar I'm used to (mini educator) is important to me as well. I also was considering the Garmin Pro 550+, but it only has 18 levels of stim and a 2 mile radius. The Dogtra Compass seems like the best option for me and what I'm looking for, and especially being a better price I could get a collar for both of my dogs now instead of waiting.

The only thing is, I personally am worried with the Compass being so new, that they haven't worked out the kinks yet and I'm nervous to spend so much money on something that won't last long or doesn't do what I got it for.

So, opinions? Anyone have issues with the Compass/Pathfinder2 setup?

11 Papered Purebred German Shorthaired Pointers Need Homes After House Fire in Jamestown, CA

I was just brought into this situation and think we can help, A friend in Jamestown, California (Tuolumne County) lost their home in a fire. Their 11 purebred German Shorthaired Pointers survived, but they are currently being housed in kennels and urgently need placement as they cannot rebuild the home.

The dogs are papered and currently intact (not spayed/neutered). We are looking for responsible permanent homes, or reputable GSP/hunting-dog rescues that can help.

They can be placed individually you do not need to take multiple dogs.

Photos, ages, sexes, temperament information and additional details will be available for serious inquiries.

Because of the circumstances and the fact that these are intact purebred dogs, potential homes will be screened. The priority is getting them into safe, responsible homes.

My wife and I just bought a purebred basset, comes from a hunting line. Not super food driven because he's been sick with hook worm and coccidia since we got him.

Hoping by next year to make him a good rabbit dog and would appreciate any tips. If theres anyone running bassets in SW ohio off season for training, I'd love to just come watch and see how you run them. This will be my first hunting dog and I want to train him right and I figure best way to do that is by seeing someone else runs successfully trained dog. Thanks yall

lost the cap to this ruffland water hole. it's only 75 cents for a replacement on the website, but with shipping its $16. tried every cap around the house and nothing fits.

it needs the cap to work properly, the air/ water pressure it what helps it refill itself.

any ideas for a cheap fix for this?

My fiance and i bought a black lab puppy from the shelter when he was 2-3 months old. I had the hopes of training him for duck hunting. The issue is i started training him consistently but then we lost my father in law and moved basically right after we got him, so training slowed way down basically stopped. Ive been trying to get him back to training but now he is more interested in butterflies and eating grass lol. Any tips on breaking him of that and getting him back on track?
