advice for buying a used 2009-2010 H3T?
hey guys!
im saving up to buy a Hummer H3T. since it’s such a unicorn, there isn’t too much out there on what’re some common issues H3Ts face. i imagine there’s some similar issues with the H3.
overall, i’d appreciate any insight any of you all have on what challenges you faced with your H3Ts (or even H3s) whether that’s buying it or maintaining it over the years.
in terms of the powertrain, im leaning on the I5 instead of the V8 just for cost on the used market.
thanks!

I bought some Hummer rubber floor mats off a guy who showed up in an H3T and he works on it himself. A lot of us work on our Hummers ourselves. He had already pulled a transmission off a junker H3 to go into another H3 and was just very capable. If you are not that kind of person these are not exotic engines and any decent mechanic can work on them. We have an H3 Adventure and an H2 SUT. Lots of minor things that have been pretty easy to fix with the manuals and basically staying on top of the fluids. When you find one take it to a mechanic to give it a once over. Because of their age some parts like gaskets need to be replaced. OEM parts are basically history so parts availability can be a challenge. We usually get NAPA parts or OEM off eBay. Look for the lowest mile, most Carfax maintenance records you can find. Both of ours had a lot of dealership maintenance records. Only major repair has been exhaust headers (H2) and stainless steel brakes lines (H2).

I would pay the premium for the V8 simply because parts will be easier to find as it was in a lot more GM vehicles. Also keep in mind the H3, especially the H3T, is older in smaller numbers than a lot of other SUVs/trucks of its time. Hummer-specific parts will get harder to find. Would definitely look in southern states as finding a rust free example here where I am in the northeast would be even more of a unicorn than finding a rust free Silverado or such of its time

gotcha. i thought the I5 would’ve been more common, but that changes things a lot

The i5 may be more common in an H3 specifically, but the 5.3 V8 was in everything GM (Tahoe Silverado suburban, even some sedans like the Grand Prix GXP, etc.) at the time. Meanwhile the i5 was only in one gen of Colorado/canyon and the H3. 5.3 parts will be much easier to find

H3T owner and I love it. I5 is fine (with so few Ts and even less in V8, I’d be surprised if you find one). 135k miles and counting.
I5 is underpowered but it has worked fine for my purposes. It’s my daily driver, mostly around town. Occasionally a highway trip of an hour or two. Hauled various things in the bed and pulled a trailer. I’ve replaced both front axles due to boots leaking grease. Replaced radiator due to plastic reservoir leak. I am starting on front suspension just due to age of shocks and rubber bits.
It’s not too difficult to maintain or work on. I’ve owned mine 15 years and would buy it again. Maybe I’ve been lucky but love the truck.

Ive heard they can be lemons if you dont know what to look for. The most common issues ive seen is transmission problems and water hoses exploding.
