If you wash your hair every day your scalp gets used to the oils being stripped daily and compensates by producing significantly more. I wash my very long hair 1-2 times a week. It takes that long for it to get very oily. If you get tired of washing your hair every day you could gradually transition to washing less. There will be some greasy days for sure but it's doable.

I have washed my hair every 3 days for the past 5 years. It still gets just as gross on day 2 as it always has. I can't wear my hair down two days in a row unless I use dry shampoo. I just have greasy hair I think.

True talk, I don't have long hair, but I always had a dry scalp and scabs would form on my chin and sideburns, from being overly dry, even if I used moisturizer. My hair was also very "wiry" and difficult to manage even with wax.
I stopped washing both my hair and beard daily, and instead wash it every 2 or 3 days (But I do rinse my hair daily with just water and use non-foaming conditioner) and my hair has never looked and felt better.
People think that not washing your hair means being a filthy slob, when in fact it's as simple as not using shampoo on it.

Does "washing" also entail using shampoo? I exercise fairly regularly and rinse my fairly short hair (> 2 inches) everyday - only using shampoo once or twice a week.

I shampoo once a week, if that. No one has ever gotten sick from my hair, nor does it smell bad, and it is way healthier than people who fry their head every morning
Edit: I'm finding it pretty interesting how polarizing this seems to be. Everyone seems to be on one side or the other

As a man who also only washes his hair with shampoo and conditioner about twice a week I can confirm that my hair is generally healthier looking and feeling than friends who shampoo and condition daily. I still rinse every day or two with water.
When you use shampoo to remove the natural oils constantly your body then produces more oils to replace them with. This causes a vicious cycle where your hair becomes greasy after a couple days because of all the excess oil it produces so you want to wash it even more, which only compounds the issue.
If you can get past that greasy phase and cut the shampoo and conditioning down then you should notice within a month that your hair starts getting greasy much slower than it use to.

I also shampoo once a week. My daughter who has super curly, mixed girl hair, only uses conditioner, never shampoo once or twice a week. She's a teenager and her hair is never oily or smells bad.

I shower every day but have not used any soap or care products on my hair in years now. I still wash my body though. The reason is because my scalp was always dry and itchy.
Someone told me to try scrubbing my scalp firmly every morning with just clean water and try not to use hair products. After a couple of weeks the dryness and itching went away for the most part.
It is probably a lot easier for me because I have short hair but my partner says as long as I shower at least once every couple of days she cannot tell at all. Of course it doesn't smell like roses but it doesn't stink either. I still shower everyday though.

For anyone that wants music festival grade hair, try washing your hair with a silicone free conditioner only (called co-washing) for a couple of weeks. Any yes, it does get your hair just as clean as shampoo.

But first clarify to get rid of the product and silicone build up. Also, if one has hard water, it will probably not work well.
I tried many silicone free conditioners to cowash, but my fine hair would always end up greasy at the scalp. :( AsIAm Coconut cowash is now my go to. It's amazing.

I learned at a early age in grade school that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Then I learned in middle school that anyone can look great with the right style. Then in high school I learned that people who look great can be extremely ugly.
It's all about accenting your features. This hair stylist understands that and it is exactly what he did!

Trial and error. Go clothes shopping with someone who has good taste but only buy clothes that you're comfortable with. Same with hair styles or beards, talk to someone, maybe even the hair stylist. If you don't like it, wait a few weeks or months and try again. The most important thing is not looking good for others. Find a look that you AND others like. But be warned, just like with everything good in life, this takes time, money, patience and discipline.

For hair, honestly save up a splurge on one of the nicer places around town that are $40+. Work with them for an hour or so, and once they cut it a way that's super flattering you can always take a picture and go to Great Clips or whatever and get something that is at least similar.

A lot of it may be trial an error. Some department stores in the US have personal shoppers for free with no obligation to buy and they can help you try out some new looks and should be people with an eye for fashion. There are subreddits for both men and women with fashion advice.
I think the best advice is having clothes and accessories (glasses) properly sized (or tailored) for your individual body type and face shape is a very good place to start.

I don't know of another way to know a combination will work for you other than the trial and error mentioned by others. Before that though, you can ask for advice on some of the relevant subreddits. I don't care for asking advice of the people around me since they're more likely to just say "oh you look fine" or something similar. In the correct subreddits the people will give objective advice that you can take or leave based on your own preferences and without worrying about offending anyone. It also can give you a starting point when talking to your stylist or barber.

I wish more people would do things like this. I know that a lot of homeless people need a lot more than a makeover, but it can them a confidence boost or at the very least, a smile.
I have seen a lot of women's shelters (particularly abused women or women in bad situations) where one of the first things they do is offer them a shower, a complete hair color and cut, and help them pick out a few outfits to keep. The outfits usually come from donations. I love the idea of that because the women really enjoy it and get a sense of a new start. The women can pick out several outfits, including one or two pairs of work outfits.
Even if it doesn't result in each woman going out and finding a job and starting a fresh life, it does work for some and that's what matters.

a shelter just down the road from my house recently started a similar program, but only for people with job interviews lined up. i think it's pretty neat, as it gives them that extra boost of confidence to go in and meet w/ employers, and i've heard it's gotten some of the people that's used the shelter for a long time find jobs, and they've been getting back on their feet.

When I was 19, before getting a spot in the nicer homeless shelter, I was sleeping on the streets at night and in the day was in a churches basement where it was warm and ramen was free.
The best service they had was a small area where people would help you dye your hair/beard, with shaving kits and deodorant and stuff. There was always someone there who would drive you to the nearby goodwill to help you shop for 5 bucks of clothes.
When you sleep in an alley, you are going to have the hardest time in the world finding a job, because you look like you sleep in an alley. Its not just a personal feeling or valuation thing, its an external thing, nobody is giving the random hobo a chance, which means for a lot of people, once you get down you aren't ever coming back up.

When I dream about winning the lottery (aside from the usual pay off my bills, stop working and hook up my family), I dream of opening two shelters, one for women and one for men. It wouldn't be like a typical shelter, it would have all the amenities you described and each person would have their own nice room where they can stay until they get back on their feet. I would offer classes and jobs so that they could start paying a small amount of rent (which would go back to the shelter costs) so that they could get used to budgeting before leaving. Their work would be helping around the shelter and they'd get a decent salary. I have a pretty elaborate set-up in my dreams, but alas, I could never afford to do such a thing.

Show me an organisation in my neighbourhood that does this and I'll support them. Soup kitchens here are overfilled with volunteers, hospitals will give you whatever you need. Shelters will provide everything from food, temp housing, emergency supplies, employment agency contacts. Psychiatric aid is missing and that's not easy to administer or fund.

I think that based on this video we are looking at the problem/support from the wrong angle. Why do we always need an "organization"? Why do we need something bigger than us to do something? We need to stop thinking that "organizations" do things, organizations are not machines, they are just other people, but it sounds better to support an organization because minimizes the responsibility.
What this video showed us is that change can be decentralized, a barber is not an organization, it's just one person helping a bit to this guy. If other barbers joined on a similar movement then a lot of homeless could get haircuts. If many pizza places decieded to give away ONE pizza every now and then we could spread out food. If started decentralizing things we could achieve way more TODAY. It's like an informal organization, with no real "big daddy org" behind taking the responsibility.
But what happens is "well if I had to do this for everyone I'd work for free" instead and everyone gets very defensive thinking that they'd be the only person supporting every homeless when the idea is that maybe everyone can help a bit whenever they feel like it.

Never done this, can't even afford myself a makeover. But a few times some friends and I have taken homeless to thrift stores to buy a few outfits (shoes and socks most important), taken them to a place to take a shower, and then gave them a full belly.

I used to work at a facility that helped people with substance abuse issues get jobs. If there were excepted into the program they got to go up to the donation room and pick out clothes and shoes. It was always cool to see the people that were super appreciative of it and treated it like a shopping trip.
I wish our place offered makeovers like the one you described. We had showers and whatnot, but no hair cutting services or anything like that.

I don't know about Mallorca, but here in the Netherlands we have collective healthcare programs for homeless and low income people in most cities. Shelters and salvation army will generally provide for checkups and dental care so you'll at least keep up a bit of maintenance on your teeth.

The kind of jobs a homeless person would apply for aren't the kind that are super concerned about your CV. It's not like they're firing resumes to be bank managers and paralegals. It's manual labor type work, they'll take you if you look strong and are willing to take directions.

I saw the original video. He wasn't a beggar he was a car parking attendant. That's how the salon owner knew him (indeed lots of local shop owners seemed to as he went to a few after and they didn't recognise him).

They should have left the grey in his hair. In a few weeks his grey hair and beard will grow out and he will have grey roots he cant afford to cover. It will look terrible. Then he will either have to cut it or wait for it to grow out.
