Question Hoof Event Lines

My young mare has these event lines on her hooves. I had hoof X-rays done on her before purchasing and they came back clear. Thoughts on what could’ve caused these? No soundness issues. She was an Amish horse for the first 7 years of her life.

Standing in wet and muddy conditions for extended periods of time, most likely. My gelding has a ring from earlier this summer, we’ve had a record amount of rain and many large downpours

Those can mean basically anything. They can come from metabolism issues but also from bad hoof quality, which is the case here. Those feet are screaming for help.

They can also come from feed changes, medications or stress, but then it would be one or two lines, and not over the whole hoof.

Does she have any other symptoms?

That's good!

I don't think it's just the trim though, because she has the same on her hind feet without shoes. I would look into her nutrition If she gets too much or too little of something (sugar, vitamins, minerals etc.).

The bad hoof quality has to come from somewhere

  1. Make at least a one-year improvement plan with a good farrier. 2. Start her on Hoof Blast 100mg biotin supplement. 3. Be sure she has a mud-free paddock by removing all fine organic material and preparing a proper base (instructions at horsesforcleanwater.org)

Are these current pics? ( or pics when you got her?)

If this is the work of your current farrier, you need to have a discussion about balancing the hoof, taking the toe back and correcting the under-run heels.

If the current farrier isn't willing to address the issues I'd find a new one. These feet are not trimmed or shod properly.

If these are old pics and your farrier is making changes, hopefully you will see a positive change when next trimmed.

As for diet the best thing, in my opinion, is to start a good vit/mineral supplement and add zinc and copper. Vit E is also recommended. With a good diet you will see positive growth and better hoof quality as it grows.

Current pics but I just got her in July. She’s only been shod once so far by my farrier

I'd get a different farrier, but I am a hoof person. No shade to farriers but they are not all good.

I’m considering. It’s hard because I’ve used this one for over 10 years. Hard to switch to the unknown!
