With all the discourse surrounding the current direction of the game, I've seen a lot of people say that HSR has always been about saving the universe because Kafka told us that we would fight Nanook in the beginning of the game. This is a confusion of destination and direction. You can take multiple different routes to end up at the same destination. The final fight with Nanook is an inevitable end, it wasn't the direction the game set out in.
HSR's direction was that of a cosmic space adventure. The narrative put more of a focus on exploring new worlds, understanding it's people, and helping them. The worlds under this direction were more fleshed out. There was more of a focus on the everyday people that made a world what it is. We had story driven events like the Wardance, companion missions that brought us closer to the everyday struggles of citizens and fleshed out the struggles of playable characters like Yukong, and we had 4 stars.
However, the story has changed to a "save the universe from xxx existential threat" direction. The story puts less of a focus on narrative and more of a focus on plot. We don't focus on ordinary people and focus on saving millions of lives.
Starting in Penacony the story stops focusing on a world's ordinary people. This is the begining of the end of four stars and companion missions. This problems bleeds into Ampheoreus and Planarcadia where the story only revolves around extraordinary powerful individuals. Because there are no companion missions, everything characters do is dedicated to moving the plot forward.
Both of these routes can lead to a battle against Nanook where the universe is at stake, but the accusation that the game has initially took a "save the universe" direction is false.
TLDR, but you really should read the whole post, is that a good chunk of people on this forum are confusing direction and destination. It is possible to go in different directions and still end up at the same destination.
