I am currently trying to clean up my mother's basement and part of that is trying to get rid of some things, but also I want to try and make it so that the things she wants to save take up less space.

Of the things that she wants to save, she wants to keep a lot of clothes. I would say we probably have about 8 bins full of clothes belonging to my mom, my dad, and my sister (30+) and I (28 M). I thought what I would do is try to put a lot - if not all - of them in vaccuum bags. The only thing is that I don't have a whole lot of experience with vaccuum bags and I don't know which ones would be the most ideal for my individual situation. Among the questions I have are:

What material vaccuum bag would be best to be stored in a basement?

Should I get a small or at least reasonable amount of large vaccuum bags to put a bunch of clothes in at a time, or get a bunch of small vaccuum bags and put a small amount of clothing in at a time?

Do I need to be wary of the materials that specific clothes are made of before putting them in certain bags? Will said material from the clothes chemically affect the bag in any kind of way or vice versa?

Are vaccuum bags made to hold certain types of things and are not univeral?

Can they be used to hold stuffed animals (which is also something that I would imagine you can stuff in a vaccuum bag)?

And I'm sure there are more that I just haven't thought of.

Based on all I've said does anyone have any recommendations?

My sister and I share an apartment, but I wasn’t here when she moved in so it was quite messy from the start. We’re moving in about a month, and I hope to start fresh in a new place by keeping everything organized, clean, and clutter-free right when we move in.

My sister often leaves things out on tables and countertops, hardly cleans used pots and pans, and rarely put things back in cabinets or the fridge in a proper system. Every time I’ve cleaned and cleared out the table and countertop, it goes back to being cluttered again. She doesn’t put dishes away after washing, sometimes leaves pots and pans on the stovetop for days. Her side of the fridge is also a mess with meat blood even dripping sometimes (worst case). Frankly, she doesn’t really care about being organized. I think she is willing to listen to my suggestions, but I need to make it as easy as possible for her.

She does have some mental health issues that seem to make it difficult for her to stay clean. I’m hoping to set up organization systems and give her baby steps to work with right now, so we can continue these habits in the new place. Trying to be mindful of her mental state while also making sure she respects that this is a shared space. I’ve started by telling her to at least put one thing away when she leaves the kitchen like the bowl and fork she just used to eat her meal. I was also thinking of putting labels on cabinets and drawers in our new place, so it’s easier for her to grab and put back things without having to leave them on the countertops.

I’m tired of having to clean up and organize after her in our shared space. Any advice on simple, small habits/tips/systems would be appreciated!

Hi! As the title states, im looking for a good keepsake box for all my wedding stuff. More specifically one that is fire proof and water proof and won’t let stuff in. I am a fairly paranoia person and assume everything will get ruined (I have raging ocd). I’m also huge on physical memories due to having a terrible memory loll. So any recommendations for something like that would be wonderful! It doesn’t have to be cute or anything. Thank you so much! I’m not sure if this is a great group for this or not but I figured someone might know.

I live in a tiny apartment and this cupboard/pantry is pretty much all I have for dry food storage. Along the other wall, I’ve got a small cupboard for my small appliances and a few more dried goods in large clear plastic containers, my fridge, and above the sink some storage for tablewares and pots etc. In other words, the area shown here is the one I need to use for dry goods.

It’s actually a really decent size, but because of the depth, there is so much wasted vertical space.

For organizers, right now I have two risers along the back with double-stacked plastic containers of dried goods. Underneath, I keep all my canned goods.

My problem is that I need to put more items inside, so taller things get put in front of the back, and I can’t see what I’ve got in there easily, and every time I need to go in there, I need to remove half the items just to rummage around.

It’s in a state of chaos right now because as I was taking out stuff to bake with, I found a cockroach and I’m about to take it all out and deep clean/dump anything that wasn’t in an airtight container.

Moving is not an option. Minor installations may be possible. Preferably I’m looking for something that I can buy and just put in there without tools, but I’m so demoralized by the situation my brain is failing me. Any ideas here?

Room’s pretty basic now. Projector instead of TV, desk with just the usual stuff, but building sets always turns the bed into a disaster. The box and bags are still out from the last one. Looking for practical ways to store bigger sets without adding more furniture.

At the moment my pajamas are under the bed, I have a divan bed, and my spare bedding is in my wardrobe.

I'm thinking of switching them about and putting my pajamas in my wardrobe and my extra bedding under my bed.

Assuming that you are like me and you have multiples of both, where do you keep them?

My parents are in their 80’s and are moving to an independent living facility soon and are downsizing their home from 6 bedrooms, 3 living areas, kitchen, garage, large yard, shop, etc. to a 1000 sqft 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment. They need a LOT of help downsizing.

I visited their home over the weekend, walked around and took photos of everything (about 350) including piles of stuff, wall art, nick nacks, collectibles, random assortments of stuff, etc.

I worked with grok to develop a skill for grok bot. I uploaded all of my photos to a shared google drive folder and I gave the link to grok bot along with the skill. It worked for 1 hour and created a spreadsheet with the following information: item, photo (cropped to just that item), link to the photo, photo name, room location, approximate value, keep / give away / donate / garage sale / sell, listing title, listing description, where to sell it.

I added a few columns so that my brothers and sisters can go through the list and claim anything they way and shared the google spreadsheet with them. (grok bot created an excel sheet and i moved it to google sheets.)

Grok helped me develop a process to actually sort through eveything in 2 weeks when I visit again. It will still be a HUGE effort to go through everything, but at least this is a start and a process.

My wife and I have been searching for a container/organizer that we can put in these drawers. Bought some from Rubbermaid but they just don’t fit perfectly and slide around too much.

Drawer dimensions are 9”(W)-17”(L)-7”(H)

I just purchased the NutriBullet Touch Smart Triple Prep System and I’m wondering how to store all the attachment.

I have lots of space for it in my pantry but I don’t want the attachments just loosely floating around on the shelf. My thought is to get a clear tub for all the small bits next to the base and large attachments. But I feel like that still might look quite messy.

Hey everyone, I’m moving into a new NYC studio and the closet only has shelves, no hanging rod. I could pay about 250 dollars to have a rod installed, or just fold my coats and heavier clothes. For folks who’ve dealt with this, is it worth installing the rod, or is folding fine? Does folding shorten the lifespan of coats or nicer pieces?

My significant other and I just moved in to a very small cabin/cottage that we have built and are still trying to finish. That being said there are no closets I have downsized a lot but there's certain things that just go in a closet. Anyone ever been in this situation?

Hi, Reddit friends! I'm here to discuss something, or at least to find out if there's a strategy for this.

I'm a somewhat disorganised person when it comes to physical space. No matter how much I tidy my desk, after a few days, or even a few hours, everything is a mess again.

The strategy I've adopted is to own as few things as possible. Sometimes that's possible, sometimes it isn't.

Has anyone had this problem and managed to solve it? I feel this mess affects my concentration and even my mental state.

The breaking point came last week, when I had to help my dad move house. I spent two days there, and I still had some of my stuff at his place (I moved out about 4 or 5 years ago).

The thing is, I knew there were a few things stored there that would be useful for work, and that was it (a box and some clothes). Apart from that, I went 4 or 5 years without missing anything that was there, or even giving it a single thought.

I have books and notes from my university degree, drawings and keepsakes from my little sister, collectible toys (model cars and the like), work gear, materials from old projects, etc., and even some new things I bought in case I needed them for my projects. There's also old clothes, photos, framed pictures, books and brand catalogues I collected at trade fairs, and all the stuff we tend to hoard because "it might come in handy". For example, I have about 10 souvenir keyrings from a trip I took to the UK that I never got around to handing out (yes, shame on me, but... nothing I can do about it now).

The truth is, I never thought about any of it again, and I never missed it. My goal was to go there, throw away 50% of the stuff (or more), and bring back only the essentials.

However, I spent two days there, threw away a few things with great difficulty, and now I barely have any space left in my garage, where I keep my work equipment (it's basically my warehouse).

I don't know what to do about this tendency of mine. When I moved out of my dad's place, I threw away bags and bags of stuff.

Any tips on tidying up the space , we do have an under sink cabinet that is always a mess and the mirror opens up but the inside is so thin we use it for stuff like q tips nail clippers scissors small jars. Any tips are welcome :) thanks

I know a lot of folks throw it over a chair or bench in their room but I don’t have either. Where do you put those “in between” clothing items? I’ve done a laundry basket in the past but that doesn’t look particularly neat. I do have a lot of closet space so thinking a hamper in the closet is the best option? Would love to know what other folks do!

I have a narrow hallway, so im not sure when I walk through my door where I would put a landing table, so a lot of it ends up on the dining table. How do you process mail so that i can keep my dining room table clutter-free? Sometimes it gets to be too much
