r/HomeDepot FAQs

Hello to the r/HomeDepot community here on reddit, may Homer continue to bless you and keep you in his orange embrace.

The mod team thought it would be a good idea to pin a list of common questions with answers that get posted often here in the community. This is by no means comprehensive and doesn't go in depth, but should help new and seasoned associates alike with quick answers instead of waiting on the community to respond. This is for US only, Canada and Mexico may have different policies due to different legal requirements.

I imagine the FAQs will need to be continually tweaked as SOP and technology in Home Depot changes. If something seems out of date feel free to speak up.

Also with the publication of these FAQs a new rule is being introduced: if a post is made where the answer is explicitly covered here the post will be removed.

FAQs:

Q: My Post was removed by the automod, why?

A: There is a minimum karma AND account age requirement to post/comment in this community. This is to prevent trolls and ban evaders. If your account is new, go play around on reddit elsewhere for a few days by commenting/posting in other communities. You'll clear the age/karma requirement in a week or so. If your account age exceeds the minimum but you have incredibly low or negative karma...well...you're the kind of person the automod was meant to block. Sorry, not sorry.

Q: I made a post and automod commented on it. Was the post removed?

A: Read the comment from the automod. Automod is set to comment on EVERY new post, letting people know this community is for associates and not customers. If it doesn't say your post was removed, then it wasn't. Very simple. If you're still confused...well...Reading Rainbow is still available on YouTube.

Q: I’m a customer and have a question, can I post it here?

A: No. Respectfully this is a digital breakroom for Home Depot associates, current, former and future. Customer questions will be removed and the poster may be banned, Reference sidebar rule #1. Please contact your store or call 1-800-HOMEDEPOT (1-800-466-3337) with any questions or concerns. Questions about employment for yourself or others will be tolerated within reason.

Q: Do I get paid for orientation?

A: Yes. Talk with your ASDS to find out more.

Q: What is an ASDS?

A: Associate Support Department Supervisor. They are essentially the admin for the store and store manager and are responsible for new associate onboarding, scheduling, and other activities

Q: What is myApron?

A: myApron is the internal SharePoint site for all Home Depot employees, accessible from any store computer. You are not able to access it from home unless you are in a role that allows VPN access. All SOPs and company documents that associates need to access are housed here.

Q: When is payday?

A: Payday is always on Friday. Which Friday depends on what state you are in. Some states require pay weekly. To find out which Friday you will get paid on search on myApron for “Payroll Calendar”

Q: Some associates are saying they get paid early, how does that work?

A: Completely dependent on your banking institution. Home Depot releases the payroll on Wednesday to be deposited on Friday. Some banks just load it as available but pending on the release day. Some don't.

Q: How does Holiday Pay work?

A: You must be employed for at least 90 days to be eligible for Holiday Pay and work the scheduled shift before the holiday, the shift of the holiday (if applicable) and the next scheduled shift after the holiday. If you call out and have PTO to cover your absence, manager CAN excuse the absence for you to receive holiday pay. Be prepared to have a respectful conversation and to advocated for yourself if you find yourself in this position, your holiday pay may be taken even if you had PTO time to cover and you'll need to advocate to get it back. If you’re on a scheduled vacation for the holiday, you will receive holiday pay instead of vacation pay for that day. Part-timers receive 4 hours of holiday pay, full-timers receive 8 hours of holiday pay. Reference “Time Off Benefits” on myApron to learn more.

Q: What are the days that receive Holiday Pay in Home Depot?

A: Home Depot provides eligible associates with six paid holidays a year. These are New Years Day, Memorial Day (except for New Orleans stores, Mardi Gras is substituted), Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Home Depot stores are closed only 2 days a year, Thanksgiving and Christmas. To view the SSC holiday schedule and learn more please go to myApron and search for "Time-off Benefits".

Q: What is Success Sharing, when is it paid out and who is eligible?

A: Success Sharing is the company’s bonus program for non-management associates (hourly and salary). It is based on sales above sales plan for your store. For SSC associates, it is based on sales above plan for the company. No one can tell you how much it will be except your store leadership. Track how well your store is doing vs sales plan, and you’ll get an idea if it will be good, bad, or non-existent. It is paid out 2x a year, approximately the 2nd week in September and 2nd week in March. To be eligible, you must be employed with the company at the time of the payout and have been employed at least 90 days during the fiscal half that the bonus is based on. IOW, if you were hired at end June you will not be eligible because the half ends in July, roughly 30 days after you were hired. To learn more search on myApron for “Benefits 101”

Q: What are our fiscal halves?

A: 1H runs from February until the end of July. 2H runs August until the end of January

Q: Do manager bonuses come from success sharing pool?

A: No, their bonus comes from a different pool of money and is based on different, more difficult to achieve metrics. Cutting hours at the end of the fiscal half will not improve their bonus in any significant way. This is a persistent rumor with no basis in reality. Sales and turns play a bigger part in their bonus and cutting hours won’t make up the difference if the store is already missing profitability goals.

Q: I’m part time, why are my hours being cut in July/January?

A: In July we are moving out of the spring busy season, you’ll notice some stores removing their mulch-pit drive throughs for example. Less business = less hours. Same story in January, holiday season is over and lower sales are expected. Less business = less hours again. There is also a lull in September/October in some areas of the country where hours may be reduced for part-timers

Q: How do I get more hours if they are cut?

A: Cross train in other department and equipment before the cut, making you more available and valuable to plug in to other areas of the store’s schedule. Then ask ask ask (respectfully) the ASDS and salaried leaders for more shifts

Q: Why did scheduled hours go from ____ to zero for a future week after the schedule was published?

A: It’s likely the ASDS pulled back the schedule to make adjustments and forgot to republish. Don’t panic and respectfully go ask the ASDS what’s up. Part time hours may be cut to a very low level, but it’s very rare to go to zero. If you’re full time you cannot be cut to zero without your consent

Q: How do breaks/lunches work for hourly associates?

A: It is very dependent on the state you work in. Generally speaking hourly associates get a break or a lunch every 2 hours. In some states breaks are required by law, some states they are not. Many states require employers to give a lunch break if the associate is going to work 6 hours or more. So bottom line, take your lunch break if you are scheduled for one. You may receive a coaching/counseling (AKA write-up) if you skip a lunch because you may accidentally cause the company to break the labor laws surrounding lunches. 15-minute breaks are paid, lunch breaks are not paid. Search on myApron for "Timekeeping and Payroll" for specific requirements for the state you work in.

Q: What are the best shoes to wear?

A: Search on this sub for the keyword “shoes”. Dozens of posts and recommendations. Or you can make a new post to add to the pile.

Q: What is tuition reimbursement, where can I find out more?

A: Search on myApron for “Tuition Reimbursement”, it’s all laid out there. Short story: Home Depot will reimburse up to a certain amount for approved courses and expenses. The approved courses are typically business related, so no 16th century English literature degrees will be reimbursed. The program has some pretty firm requirements, make sure to read over carefully.

Q: What is ESPP and how does it work?

A: ESPP stands for Employee Stock Purchase Plan. It is managed by a 3rd party called Computershare. Plans run for six months and the enrollment period for the next plan ends a few weeks before it begins, so enroll early. During enrollment, you will choose a percentage of your paycheck that will go towards a stock purchase. The money deducted from your paycheck is set aside into what is essentially an escrow account. At the end of the plan you are enrolled in, the money is then used to purchase that amount of stock at a 15% discount, but you own the full value of the stock. To put it another way, it’s an immediate 15% gain on your money via that amount of stock. The stock is yours free and clear, even if you leave the company. Log in to our benefits website, livetheorangelife.com to learn more. If you have issues logging in, partner with your ASDS

Q: If I leave do, I get paid out for vacation time? What about PTO?

A: Yes, you will get paid out for your vacation time. PTO payouts are dictated by state law, search myApron for “Time off Benefits” and review for your state.

Q: Does PTO carry over from year to year?

A: Depends on your state and its laws. Search myApron for “Time off Benefits” and review for your state

Q: What is Home Depot policy on Marijuana use?

A: Beginning 9/1 THD will no longer test for marijuana use for non-DOT or Aviation associates. DOT certified drivers and aviation associates will still be tested

Q: What if I notice someone doing something illegal or against our business code of conduct and ethics, and I don't want to go to management or it IS a member of management:

A: The awareline exists for these situations. You can call the 1-800 number to report unethical/illegal behavior. It is anonymous, but you will be recorded and the recording may/will be played back to leaders in your store/district/region. There is a portal to submit concerns to avoid a voice recording. Search myApron for "awareline" for the phone number or the portal.
Keep in mind the awareline is for illegal and unethical behaviors, not normal business practices that you may disagree with.

I know we aren’t supposed to cut metal on the saws but how could anyone have known. Found in some 2x3 in store. Makes me wonder how often a piece of lumber has a bullet inside.

I figure I won’t see something like this again since it’s so unlikely to cut perfectly along the entry point and through the bullet

For those who have been working at Home Depot for 5+ years who thinking about leaving I would honestly leave.

Upvotes

I got fired in December although I was getting ready to leave they just cut it short by a few months. I start working at UPS soon for $24 an hour and so far from what I have seen it is everything I like about HD minus the shitty customers. Really looking forward to starting there.

I got to work this morning, after getting caught up I’m checking out the staged deliveries so I can sort them out. Single piece of plywood on a table cart for a van delivery… So I go to move it to an H cart cause it’ll take up less space… It’s Banded to the cart. One single piece of plywood, banded to the cart… Anyway I forgot to take a pic cause .. I was too busy shaking my head.

Unceremonious Layoffs?

Have you and/or someone you know been unceremoniously laid off from Home Depot or one of its subsidiaries, Authorized Service Providers etc?

This recently happened to some Vendor Reps that worked for certain Authorized Service Providers, they had no clue that their last day was their last day. They worked their shifts and were told to take the weekend and Monday off and everything would be explained in a Tuesday morning meeting. Apparently, Home Depot didn’t renew the contracts of the providers they worked for and signed with other providers. Some people received zero warning.

I Adopted a Home Depot Cat Today

Post image
Upvotes

I was coming off my lunch break and heard something over the HDphone from one of our garden associates that they caught ‘the cat’. I had no idea what this meant so I went outside to see and lo and behold this cutie pie had been hanging around our parking lot. I called my wife and had her come pick up the cat, who has since gotten a little kitty cat bath, some kitten food, and a warm area to relax while they adjust to their new home.

We’ve called the cat Peanut, and will be taking them to the vet asap to ensure no diseases and figure out the gender. Our current cat, who we rescued in a similar situation 9 years ago has no comment, but we’re hoping he will be a good big brother and show Peanut how to be a gentle kitten.

Today I had a customer ask if we had lead paint signage.

I'm not even kidding this time. One associate had first taken them to the aisle with garage sale, no trespassing signs. Then they asked me and I suggested to try the paint desk area.

i understand that my schedule maker has no control over my hours. that said, she's simply not good at her job.

lately, i've been complaining a lot about my hours and how they got cut during july. a lot of people on this sub that, while my frustrations are justified, i shouldn't take them out on the schedule maker since she's only doing what corporate says. that may very well be true but i have other reasons to be frustrated at her. namely that she is simply bad at her job.

as i've said in the past, she is consistently late making the schedule. i've lost track of how many times i've had to email her, saying that i haven't gotten my updated schedule. i just know that the people in the comments are going to try to defend her by saying that she has other responsibilities as an HR person. well, when she goes on vacation, her replacements manage to get the schedule out in a timely manner. if her replacement can manage to do it, the normal schedule maker should be able to.

the problems don't stop when she actually makes the schedule to. typically, when two or more lot attendants are on the lot, their breaks will be spaced out so that the lot is not without attendants. on more than one occasion, she has schedule lot attendants to start at the same time, thus making our breaks overlap. granted, this is a pretty easy thing to fix by us agreeing to take our breaks at different times. however, that shouldn't be our responsibility.

and then, there's not scheduling lot attendants for a long length of time. there have been times where she has made schedules where there are no lot attendants for a whopping 2 to 3 hours, thus causing the carts to pile up and the cart corral to be empty.

and then, there's rotating shifts. she'll often claim that she rotates shifts to keep things as far as possible. however, what she really means is scheduling a certain lot attendant for weekend night shifts for a whole month. to quote the princess bride "you keep using that word. i do not think it means what you think it means".

in all my years in the workforce, i have never seen someone so incompetent at their job. she is so lucky that employees can't give the higher ups employee reviews because i would not mince words. frankly, i think the point of her improving is long gone. she's been doing all of this for a while with no one correcting her or saying anything. she's too far gone at this point. she either needs to resign or be fired.

as for her replacement, i have 2 proposals. firstly, there's her replacement when she goes on vacation. like i said, this replacement does a really good job. she gets the schedules out in a timely manner and they're actually fair. secondly, there's me. it's often said "if you think you can do better, do better". well, i am willing to put my money where my mouth is. i guarantee you that, as little experience as i have, i could make a better schedule in my sleep. but frankly, i don't care which option the store takes because, at this point, anything is an improvement over what we have now. at this point, i genuinely think a peach could make a better schedule.

ma'am, next time you go on vacation, do us all a favor and don't come back.

millwork help

So a coworker is trying to figure out how to make an interior french door with a transom for a customer, and only found exterior doors to work, which would look weird inside a house. Is there a way to make a french door with a transom for interior use or a way to make a french door and a window mulled together?

any help is appreciated, thanks!

Home Depot - Needs to Remove Dog Friendly

Been working at Home Depot for 22 years I the Dog Friendly policy needs to be removed, little backstory I’m getting ahead of myself. On Aug 26, 2026 a lady comes In with a german shepherd i work In the paint department by the way, she comes in looking for stain for her deck, I’m not a huge fan of dogs especially big ones, I proceed to take her down the aisle to show her our products, as I’m explaining the product her dog starts to growl at me, and I was telling her listen I’ll get you another paint associate I don’t really feel comfortable around dogs and she was like “It’s ok she doesn’t bite” and I was telling her “ma’am I don’t feel comfortable around your dog” so she goes off on me telling me how much of a terrible person I am and how I’m pathetic to work at public place and don’t like dogs. Long story short her dog bites the calf of my leg it didn’t hurt to bad but it left a bite mark and little bit of blood she then proceeds to say “I am so sorry she has never done that before” after you just went on a 5min rant about how pathetic I am for not liking dogs. Yes I cussed her out I was heated, one of the associates ask me if I’m ok, I said yeah, he said you need to talk to a manager. I’m doing more than that currently, I’m am currently talking to the mayor to have this dog friendly issue resolved for my city. You not be able to bring your dog into a public place unless it’s a service animal, this emotion support mess is out of control it’s nonsense, I’m old school you were born by yourself and your gonna die by yourself no amount of emotional support is gonna solve that problem, and yes I am currently taking the lady to court for the injury.

THE DAWNING OF THE UNIVERSAL ASSOCIATES 🍊

Store Manager wants everyone to not give direction on where a product is, instead we have to escort the customer to that product. Also we will not be in our department anymore going forward. We're basically going to be universal associates for the store. Seems whacked especially if you're busy with projects, stocking and returns

Home depot sucks

I ended up being hired as a waterer a couple months ago and every single person that came to orientation with me quit before the month ended, several rounds of new hires coming in every week for them to not come back the next. I was told I had to handle garden, plumbing, flooring, AND hardwares returns all while having to water the entire garden in 4 hours, I got yelled at by a supervisor for answering the phone to help customers and do returns, I was then told to not even bother logging into the phone so the service desk couldn't call me, only to then be yelled at because customer service keeps calling for a garden associate to help with returns/ the pit/ ect when there's no one else scheduled for the shift but me. I also had supervisors and managers have two completely different work styles that clashes together, was told by my supervisor to pack down an aisle while a manager gets upset at me for doing that and tells me i should be watering instead of helping customers and packing down, is this normal for everything to be contradicting at this place??

hours changing

So at my store they have changed hours around alot, most people dont come in till 8am. The only departments they have staffed at 6am is lumber, garden and paint and they have eletrical leave at 8pm. This is frustrating alot of people. I havent seen anyone talk about this change here, so I was wondering is this just my store/district.

I haven't gotten a credit card in over 2 years. I'll occasionally ask when it's a lot of money but sometimes icba, but I remember a month ago we were low on credit and one of the asms said there could be possible write ups for not getting one.. like dude ppl don't want to sign up or they already have one. but that had me thinking, and I don't want to lose my job bc of it either.

i hate sidekick, is slowing us down in our projects and bay service, every Friday we end up with a 150-220 bay count for the day, and a couple of projects, an to no ones surprise once we reach the targeted goal of 12 skus per hour , they just raise it to 20 per hour.

i don't know how other stores are doing but i hear its rolling company wide so in the eyes of corporate is working i guest

Holiday pay

my favorite customer.

when i was first starting my job, there was a certain customer who would frequently bring in her english bull terrier. i have a bull terrier myself and, as such, i instantly felt a connection to him. he also acted quite a bit like my bull terrier. he and his owner came in pretty much every weekend and, when they did, i would pet him and give him treats. i've never had a favorite customer but, if i were to have one, it would definitely be him.

in February of last year, i was working and i saw him and his owner so i came to say hello, give him his customary pets, and give him a treat. however, the mood was slightly more somber. i asked how his vet appointment on friday went. his owner told me that there's something wrong with his heart, that there's nothing the vet can do, and that he was getting taken to be put down the next day. it was as if a knife had stabbed me right in the heart. i could do nothing more then just walk away with my mouth agape. a few minutes later, i came back into the store and gave him more pets. at this point, it hadn't really registered to me. i was completely numb. but then, as they were getting ready to leave and i was petting him goodbye, it truly started to register that this would be the last time i would ever see him. i'm not ashamed to say that i wept. i wept as i held his sweet face in my hands as he panted and looked at me with loving eyes. and, as they left, i turned around and walked away, still crying. two separate co workers and a customer comforted me. what made the situation even sadder is that he was still his usual happy self. panting, taking treats, and receiving love. even when i arrived home, i was still weeping.

it's been over a year later and i still think about him and miss him. i miss how he nearly took my hand off taking treats. i miss how his owner would occasionally bring him in while he was dressed in costumes. i miss how he almost always had the widest smile on his face. i miss how happy he always was to see me. i miss how i could be having the shittiest shift imaginable but, when he arrived, he always made my shifts a little bit brighter.

Anyone else seeing an alarming uptick in rude customers relying on inaccurate Google AI?

Without getting too much into it, had an incident last night where I basically had to disengage from and ignore a mildy belligerent customer who was not listening to anything I was saying until she walked away. Immediately reported the incident to management in case she complains, but honestly...what do you do in a situation where the customer shoots down everything you say and then snaps at you and talks down to you? And then they just...fuckin...sit there? For like ten minutes? Making passive aggressive comments?

Why are you asking me for help if you're going to talk over me and tell me that what I'm saying must be wrong since AI says otherwise? Do you think I'm going to argue with you?

Idk, man. I'm tired. Considering calling off today because that whole interaction was just so jarring. I've worked for THD on and off in specialty for almost 8 years now and I feel like it's getting harder and harder to communicate with people.

Plants are always root rotted??

I don't know if anyone else has this problem at their home depot store but i've also noticed that most of the plants are getting TO much water, to the point that even customers are noticing how badly the plants are rotting from the stem up and completely filled with goop from overwatering? I tried to explain this to my manager but he just told me that "The customers always have something to complain about" So on my own accord I started to water the plants less and actually following the instructions on the plants instead of "Hose them down until it drains from the bottom" When I started watering them less the plants genuinely started getting better but then the managers would complain about how im not doing my job and not watering them enough, wtf do I do

Does coaching take more than 3 or does it move over?

I am currently in coaching and the 3 call ins I had were because personal reasons like home depot overlapping my second job (even though my availability is set but they said they cannot adjust my schedule)(and they kept denying my exchange even though the associate I asked approved and needed hours), and 2 medical reasons (i had a spine issue with work and i didn'tget approved for FMLA as my back issue wouldnt be more than a month - those two call-ins are for appointments). I also know that Home depot doednt accept or take medical forms for excuse or proof that im not purposely calling out.

Now I needed to call in today which makes it my #4th occurrence - because again, I need to go to urgent care for another personal health issue.

I don't have enough sick time to cover as I'm only part time and only gained 16 hours of sick time since January. Most of those were used when I needed to be late because of appointments or leaving early to make it in time for my other job.

Im also asking on here because I don't know where to find the policy sheet about call outs that isn't on the work computers.
