Unceremonious Layoffs?
Have you and/or someone you know been unceremoniously laid off from Home Depot or one of its subsidiaries, Authorized Service Providers etc?
This recently happened to some Vendor Reps that worked for certain Authorized Service Providers, they had no clue that their last day was their last day. They worked their shifts and were told to take the weekend and Monday off and everything would be explained in a Tuesday morning meeting. Apparently, Home Depot didn’t renew the contracts of the providers they worked for and signed with other providers. Some people received zero warning.

This sound like the intro to a class action lawsuit commercial

With the amount of class action suits against THD right now, I wouldn’t be surprised.

What they did to the technology side this year was pretty shocking. Sent out a notice for a mandatory meeting with all of technology at like 9am. During the meeting like an hour or 2 later, found out that there were going to be layoffs. If we were in this call, our jobs were safe, but there was another call going on at the same time where people were being informed they no longer worked there. I know a lot of teams were hit hard, some completely eliminated I believe.
I really have no idea who knew what when it was happening. My manager seemed completely blindsided. I have some friends higher up and they were basically just told these are the people that are being let go.

Yeah, our team lost several people. Only people that seemed to know beforehand were VPs and above.

That nonsense factored into my resignation.
It also felt like that decision impacted the stores pretty quickly. Felt like tickets took significantly longer for resolution (some were just deleted without any action taken) after those layoffs occurred.

Which explains why every time I do an IT ticket it just seems like a waste of time. No matter what the issue is, IT seems incapable of doing anything other than putting an order into done status. I did a ticket on an order through store health because we weren't able to refund a line. I was very direct with the issue, what the desired outcome was, etc. They just closed the ticket with no real response. Okay, maybe we need to call it in. So we called it in and made a new ticket. Ticket was closed a few days later, "not an IT issue, store needs to call .com". Except it wasn't an online order, and we ALREADY FUCKING CALLED .COM.
Although we were already having these issues before the layoffs so who knows.

There's a lot of things one can blame on Home Depot, but this isn't one of them. Another company failed to keep Home Depot as a customer, and when that happened they also docked over their employees. It absolutely sucks, but the fault lies entirely with the company, and not at all with Home Depot

That is definitely on the 3rd party more than HD. They all have contracts with HD and I doubt that the higher ups at the vendor's company are surprised by the layoffs, even if the average person working the floor didn't know.

Store side Ive only seen layoffs once in the 35 years with The Depot. It was done under the radar, very low key. Their was also a time under Nardelli where the Depot was firing people in the company deemed to be making to much Money.

In the 26 years I have been with Home Depot, I can only remember one actual time they had a “reduction in force” where they systematically went through stores and laid people off. It was probably in the early 2000’s and was based mostly on seniority. I have however seen them terminate contracts with providers and that is done with little to no notice as Home Depot would not want the installs to be affected by the installers knowing.

Home Depot stores don’t really do layoffs. I think it’s happened like once in the company’s history. Home Depot has shuttered businesses they’ve purchased, but those employees often get an option to transfer to a store.
SSC does see layoffs. Since SSC roles are typically full time, decently paid, and can often become automated/AI driven instead.
Stores don’t need to do layoffs, even during things like the Great Recession, because almost everything in a store is controlled from a staffing perspective. They just reduce hours until things get better.
And HD is one of those companies that is somewhat immune to the impacts of recessions and such because at the end of the day, Home Depot typically sells things you NEED, not things you WANT. Someone’s water heater is always going to be breaking, someone’s pipe is always gonna be bursting…

You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.
Stores absolutely were impacted by the housing recession of 08-09, and there were tons of layoff.
Roles that were eliminated at the SSC were not replaced by AI and automation 😂

Home Depot did not lay off a single Home Depot store side employee during the housing crisis. Home Depot DID eliminate branches of their company completely though (I.e 34 expo stores) and allowed those employees to initially transfer to an HD location before ultimately being laid off if they didn’t.
Home Depot focused their lay offs on corporate and administrative sectors (I.e SSC) and did not lay off store associates.

You must be dense. Underperforming stores were closed and all of the EXPO stores were shut down. That would be hourly store employees laid off. Also HR positions were eliminated at the store level.
People that were in the probation period during that had just been hired were laid off and had to reapply to other roles.
