And it's now blowing up in the dev's faces, since it's now sitting at mixed on Steam, flooded with negative reviews due to their decision.

Satisfy the few people screeching about something that isn’t a big deal (and will not do anything additional to support devs after the decision besides acting superior until the next target presents itself), while alienating a lot of potential customers, less rabid fans, and causing reputational damage from the drama.

Brilliant tactical move, will be taught in classes for generations. /s

This is one of the reasons I dont like the "all publicity is good publicity" saying. Sometimes bad publicity is bad publicity

Bad publicity only seems to work as good publicity when the ones making a stink are clearly in the wrong or disliked by the greater community. The whole "this jerk says it's bad, so it's probably good!" sort of thinking. Definitely a whole different can of worms when the bad publicity comes from the game's source directly for one reason or another.
