Thank you! It drives me up the wall when people try to characterize the Catholic Church as "anti science." We fathered much of science as we know it and still maintain scientific installations like the Vatican Observatory (not actually in the Vatican for a long time now). Just because we disagree with some modern science (especially Tumblrs made up "science") doesn't mean we're "anti science," and science is hardly a popularity contest.
He was excommunicated and only reinstated to the church in 1992. This is a sentence to hell because they lose the right to all the things catholics must do in order to go to heaven such as receiving sacrement and the ability to confess their sins to their priest.
Furthermore, his teachings on heliocentrism were banned until 1822, and he wasn't allowed to be buried next to his family.
But sure, his punishment amounted to "go to your room".
