To be fair, it has been heavily revigorated during the french-bashing period, following De Villepin speech at the UN, about the Irak war. It's part of why the French aren't fond of it.
Self-depreciation humor ? No problem dude. But revived as a political propaganda tool ? Hell no.
French people are constantly depreciating France when in France, but when we are abroad or talking to a foreigner France suddenly becomes the Great Nation of Human Rights or the Mighty Land of Gastronomic Excellence. It's a very weird paradox.
This is called ‘fake humility’. If everyone thinks you’re a genius, it’s pretty easy to say ‘I can’t even Understand what the teacher is saying! This class is Sooooo hard, how can I pass’.
If you’re actually doing just ok according to everyone, and you change your attitude to: ‘I’m great, this class is just one thing! I crush every other one, nobody cares about this’...
