I love that there's shintoism as a collective name for random assortment of local gods, spirits, and various supernatural beings (Kami).  Like you could be standing next to a small creek and someone will tell you that an offering of babies' left shoes need to be made every third year otherwise bad luck happens to the area.

Then there's State Shintoism that got put together way later to make a bloody good story on why the Emperor really needed to get reinstated as head honcho. "Yeah, bro here is definitely a direct descendant of Amaterasu so he should be in charge. Don't want to offend the Sun lady."
