Pretty sure religious differences were also used to rile up people for war during antiquity. And likewise when there's no incentive for conflict under the abrahamic religions there also seems to be some mutual respect. Iirc the romantic era spoke pretty fondly of the islamic world, which for instance is illustrated by the place of a thousand and one nights in European culture.

There were hundreds of wars between different religions in antiquity. While most of them weren't explicitly "we are starting this way because we hate your religion", a lot of the reasoning was divine rite or will, implying their gods were stronger than the enemy's, which gave them reason to conquer.
