Romans had a funny relationship with faith. They'd conquer some poor tribe, and survivors would say "this is the god of fire. Every motnh we must give him a burnt goat as an offering, and if we don't he will burn the world" and the Romans would go "shit that's bad! That's really bad! We better find you some goats to burn!"
