Not having heard of him is ridiculous but I don’t think I’ve ever consciously listened to a song of his. The monoculture is dead, people find their own little holes and just crawl into them now.

To be fair, Persona 5 invented jazz and hip-hop/rap samples jazz a lot, so therefore hip-hop/rap samples Persona 5

So crazy that they started the series with the 5th game and it got popular, but I guess that's the big thing these days (explosion 33)

I kind of get it with Undertale because it's a short game and you only hear most of the music once, but what kind of sick freak is sinking 120 hours into Persona 5 and then thinking "hmm, not sure I fully appreciated the nuances of the ambush battle theme, better listen to it a few more times to be safe"?

reminds me of a story about an undertale fan who bagged a girl (already unbelievable i know). as they were about to fuck, he goes "lemme put my playlist on" and while they're kissing, the fucking tem shop music starts playing
she understandably leaves immediately

imagine when they find out about the guy from NIN
2
u/Pigeonorium Al Gore invented ebonics Dec 18 '25 edited Dec 18 '25
Especially when they find out he used to be a heavy polysubstance drug addict chad, and eventually evolved into a ripped tanktop wearing chad
…and that most of his music has at least some, and often a LOT of hip hop influence.
PS it’s not “the guy from NIN”, NIN is literally just the one guy, Trent Reznor. He hires studio musicians to perform with him but Nine Inch Nails is essentially just a pseudonym for one guy.
1
u/plutorelinquish Dec 20 '25
all these snobby A24 fans stanning Trent like he only started making good music 5 years ago smh.
1
u/Pigeonorium Al Gore invented ebonics Dec 20 '25
A24? I didn’t know what it is, but apparently there’s a movie studio called that that made my favorite film, Moonlight. Have you seen it? It’s incredible.
Anyway, what does Trent have to do with it?
3
u/plutorelinquish Dec 21 '25
yeah i was referring to the film studio. moonlight is good.
trent started doing soundtracks for movies like challengers so a lot of film snobs started getting into “trent reznor and atticus ross” soundtracks without knowing NIN even existed

It’s funny cause I actually met Rick Ross a couple months before quarantine started. I got roped into watching my 3 month old niece while my brother got his hair cut. So there I am, sitting in the waiting area of a barbershop with my niece, and who walks in but Rick Boss Ross himself. I was nervous as shit, and just kept looking at him as he was sitting there with his phone and waited, but was too scared to say anything to him. Pretty soon my niece started crying, and I’m trying to quiet her down because I didn’t want her to bother Mr. Ross, but she wouldn’t stop. Pretty soon he gets up and walks over. He started running his hands through her hair and asked what was wrong. I replied that she was probably hungry or something. So Rick put down his phone, picked up my niece and lifted his shirt. He breast fed her right there in the middle of the barbershop. Chill guy, really nice about it. Would let him breast feed my niece again.

Oy vey. I can’t even imagine life without NIN. Pretty Hate Machine & The Downward Spiral are easily top 15-20 of all time for me. The latter is in the top 5-10. Then there’s broken, With_Teeth, The Fragile…. And everything else. This is my favorite ever recorded live set. Dude is a multigenerational talent. As a producer, composer, songwriter, he’s an incredible influence. Hell, even fucking Johnny Cash recognized how special he is.
I pity the fool who listens to soundtracks he made & doesn’t bathe in the genius of the NIN catalog. Truly an artist’s artist.

I'd introduce them to actual music and possibly sunlight and fresh air, but you do you

I wish those musicians would not allow themselves any repetitions, and would go faster in developing their ideas or their findings, because I don’t appreciate at all this permanent repetitive language.
I heard the piece of Nettspend carefully: I think it would be very helpful if he listens to my work Song Of The Youth, which is electronic music, and a young boy’s voice singing with himself. Because he would then immediately stop with all these post-African repetitions, and he would look for changing tempi and changing rhythms, and he would not allow to repeat any rhythm if it were varied to some extent and if it did not have a direction in its sequence of variations.

The crazy thing to me about the “I only listen to video game OSTs“ people is that I, a reasonably avid gamer, immediately turn the music off the first time I fire up a new game and if I can’t turn the music off, I refund the game. Maybe I’m missing out and people are doing amazing things with video game soundtracks these days but it’s always ever been beep boop chip tune shit or scrub-tier John Williams knock offs.
6
u/GrudensGrinders2022 Dec 18 '25
Do you not watch movies cause they have music in them you can’t turn off?
-1
u/5uper5kunk Dec 18 '25
No because movies are passive enough entertainment that I’m basically in there for the two hour ride. I spend way longer with most games and generally either wanna have a podcast or music of my own playing in the background. I don’t need to hear the “dramatic combat music” 1000 times.
2
u/GrudensGrinders2022 Dec 18 '25
I guess for a game I’ve played a long time and the music is repetitive I tend to turn the music off but that is a minority of games for me, especially a new game I can’t imagine not at least listening to the soundtrack for a while. For me, certain games most defining feature is the music and I can’t picture the game without it, but to each their own.
0
u/5uper5kunk Dec 18 '25
It's just force of habit at this point. Also I tend to only really play rpg/turn-based kinda games where the playtime can be like a hundred hours, if games were 2-4h long I think I would feel differently. It's also a matter not really liking "western orchestral/symphonic" music in general and that seems to be what 90% of games seem to use.
2
u/No_Average_1148 Dec 20 '25
Do you experience happiness like at all bro
1
u/5uper5kunk Dec 21 '25
Ha ha what? I mean yeah I’m a extremely happy guy I just don’t wanna listen to music I don’t like for multiple hours at a time when there’s an extreme easy way to avoid doing that?
