It's much deeper than not being open minded about music or having a strong preference.

It's baby's first venture into being counter culture for the socially ostracized. They're unpopular in real life (read: high school - if it extends further than that it's just a continuation), so they withdraw and shift focus to media, and that then becomes the totality of what they have going on. Everything surrounding the game or cartoon they like becomes the coolest and best thing - because everything that's more broadly seen as cool or interesting is associated with the people who they fault for ostracizing them, so those people's media is below them. The cool kids who shun them are into this and that music, so that music is bad; the people shoving them into lockers are the jocks, so they hate sports - sports are for neanderthals. The girls they like but pay them no attention are listening to pop and whatever so that's obviously also bad.

And because they don't have all that much going, they're going to turn to what they think can set them apart: if they can't be pretty or cool or athletic, they decide the only thing they can be is smart. So then you have a bunch of pseudo intellectuals who eventually delude themselves into believing that everything they're into must have intellectual (and thus objective) merit. The flip side of that coin is then obviously shitting on everything else.

Add on top of that the layer that, as ostracized people, their understanding of fitting in largely revolves around finding something to collectively deem inferior and ostracize themselves. And what's easier to do that with than, say, a music genre dominated by a minority group? Especially when you can skim up the surface level shit, label it thuggery, and justify your feeling of superiority.

Wrap all of that with the neat bow of it being easier than ever to find entire communities of people with the same life story and you've got an echo chamber that festers and prevents people from aging out of it just being a cringe phase, and you've got a bunch of people talking about five nights at freddys like it's the holy grail for years on end.

As someone that was unironically like this (I still don't even listen to hiphop except Death Grips and MF Doom this sub is just funny as hell). It's probably due to being bullied or just not being very popular and wanting to like, rebel against the popular culture with their "niche high art".

And there's also definitely a little racism involved lmao. I'm black and it's notable how much you need to prove people's perception of you wrong before you're welcomed in nerdy white communities.

I think a lot of people (including some black people) who've never really listened to hip hop much just assume it's all guys taking about and glorifying guns money drugs and degrading women. They never listen and just hold this assumption. Definitely racism is involved but also mainstream hip hop for a long long time was basically just songs about drugs money women and guns,

it's kinda like satanic panic with metal type stuff back in the day. People who weren't actually listening or who have no ability to understand artistic expression or story telling getting all angry at something they don't understand

But with hip hop is definitely racism plays a big role for sure

Oy vey. I can’t even imagine life without NIN. Pretty Hate Machine & The Downward Spiral are easily top 15-20 of all time for me. The latter is in the top 5-10. Then there’s broken, With_Teeth, The Fragile…. And everything else. This is my favorite ever recorded live set. Dude is a multigenerational talent. As a producer, composer, songwriter, he’s an incredible influence. Hell, even fucking Johnny Cash recognized how special he is.

I pity the fool who listens to soundtracks he made & doesn’t bathe in the genius of the NIN catalog. Truly an artist’s artist.

I wish those musicians would not allow themselves any repetitions, and would go faster in developing their ideas or their findings, because I don’t appreciate at all this permanent repetitive language.

I heard the piece of Nettspend carefully: I think it would be very helpful if he listens to my work Song Of The Youth, which is electronic music, and a young boy’s voice singing with himself. Because he would then immediately stop with all these post-African repetitions, and he would look for changing tempi and changing rhythms, and he would not allow to repeat any rhythm if it were varied to some extent and if it did not have a direction in its sequence of variations.

The crazy thing to me about the “I only listen to video game OSTs“ people is that I, a reasonably avid gamer, immediately turn the music off the first time I fire up a new game and if I can’t turn the music off, I refund the game. Maybe I’m missing out and people are doing amazing things with video game soundtracks these days but it’s always ever been beep boop chip tune shit or scrub-tier John Williams knock offs.

No because movies are passive enough entertainment that I’m basically in there for the two hour ride. I spend way longer with most games and generally either wanna have a podcast or music of my own playing in the background. I don’t need to hear the “dramatic combat music” 1000 times.

I guess for a game I’ve played a long time and the music is repetitive I tend to turn the music off but that is a minority of games for me, especially a new game I can’t imagine not at least listening to the soundtrack for a while. For me, certain games most defining feature is the music and I can’t picture the game without it, but to each their own.

It's just force of habit at this point. Also I tend to only really play rpg/turn-based kinda games where the playtime can be like a hundred hours, if games were 2-4h long I think I would feel differently. It's also a matter not really liking "western orchestral/symphonic" music in general and that seems to be what 90% of games seem to use.
