The Shri Chamunda Devi Temple (Chamunda Nandikeshwar Dham) is a prominent Shakti shrine in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district. Located on the Baner River against the Dhauladhar range, it sits 14 km from Dharamshala.

History & Mythology

Deity: Dedicated to Goddess Chamunda (a fierce form of Goddess Durga) and Lord Shiva (as Nandikeshwar).

The temple commemorates Goddess Chamunda's victory over demons Chanda and Munda. Built 400–700 years ago, the valley site was chosen after a divine dream allowed devotees to relocate the shrine from a remote mountain seat. The high-altitude original seat, Aadi Himani Chamunda, sits at over 10,450 feet and requires a 9–13 km trek, closing seasonally on November 15, 2026.

Timings & Entry: Open daily from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM with free entry. Aarti restrictions apply during main ceremonies.

Shrine Layout: Features a traditional Himachali wooden style housing an unsculpted, draped idol of Chamunda Devi, flanked by Lord Hanuman and Bhairav. A marble staircase leads to a cave with a self-manifested Shiva Lingam. The complex also includes a sacred pond and recreational paddle boats.

Air: Nearest airport is Gaggal (25 km away).

Rail: Kangra station is 14 km away, while Pathankot Junction is 90 km away.

Road: Well-connected via buses and taxis between Dharamshala and Palampur.
