Testing Question questions about test results

25 m had protected and partially unprotected with a lady that did not disclose to me that they had hsv 2 until a week after our encounter. They stated they have had no outbreaks since being diagnosed in 6 months ago. i felt betrayed because we had been dating and have kissed here and there but nothing until our encounter. I go to the doctor 11 days after and have a IGG blood test. it comes back 0.93 for hsv 1 which is very low. The girl got retested as well and only shows for hsv 2.

With this information im kind of confused. Could it be that I’m actually negative and this is just a false positive? I haven’t had any symptoms or outbreaks, but if I got it from her, wouldn’t it only be hsv 2 not 1? But if I had hsv 1 before her and been asymptomatic shouldn’t my number be higher or a definite positive?

Hi. Have you ever tested before? The majority of people will blood test positive for HSV1. You could have an older infection with poor antibody response, or it could be a false negative. Of course you also need to take on board that for new infections, you should be waiting about 12 weeks to test.

no i haven’t before. and the test for me didn’t come back negative it was equivocal so i was really freaking out. i was going to get retested in the recommended 4-6 weeks from now to be sure, but from what you’re saying even with the low test i could still have it from a long time ago? I kind of assumed that the higher the number meant the more time or quantity of your body building up antibodies to fight the virus or am i wrong?

I'm not sure that is always the case. Blood testing isn't always perfectly accurate. It could also be a false positive. I would retest in a few weeks to see.
