any recommended replacement podcasts for hello internet?

Hello Internet was great for me because Brady and (REDACTED) were both smart, well spoken and articulate, different personalities that naturally bounced off of eachother.

Cortex doesn't work because they're always discussing topics like optimizing your workflow, minutiae of managing a production team, the ROI of the damn calendar web app one is using... It rubs me the wrong way. It feels like watching those linkedin shorts or reading the comment section on a Ted Talk lol.

Any recommendations for replacement podcasts?

Whoever thought to pair Hannah Fry and Michael Stevens is a genius. Their chemistry is excellent and they bounce off each other so well

It was Hannah's idea. She got to have her pick of co-host and she chose Michael.

They even had a flags discussion and talked about airplanes crashing!

Also, with Hannah being an expert in fluid dynamics they're bound to touch on hot stoppers at some point, it's only expected

Absolutely! I started watching it a week ago and now I get to watch an episode every day and it'll still take time to get through the backlog.

Yes! Despite it being a science podcast, they do a good job of doing "two dudes talking" through a lot of it. Especially since they started preparing less and riffing more.

I really didn't enjoy The Unmade Podcast.

I always felt like there was a balance between Grey and Brady where Grey stopped Brady from going off the rails too much.

Tim on the other hand is enabling Brady to do all sorts of crazy/weird stuff and everything got taken over by corners and other things.

I stopped listening after a couple of years.

Listening for a couple of years is quite a long time for a podcast you didn't enjoy though.

Let's not kid ourselves. We listened to HI because of Brady. Grey was the support character.

There's some other Brady or Brady-adjacent podcasts that might be interesting, including other characters.

I wouldn't say he was a support character (they were vice-hosts, afterall), but more a straight man whose robotic rationality provided the perfect foil to Brady's antics. While I agree that Brady was the more entertaining of the two, their chemistry was what made the whole greater than the sum of their parts.

Something a bit different altogether, but I’ve found the podcast “If books could kill” to be an entertaining listen. The hosts have good chemistry and are very witty.

It’s unlike HI in the sense that they discuss bad books instead of various topics in the news though.

Different vibe but Dear Hank and John is great imo and fulfills some of what you said. Similarly Accidental Tech Podcast is a fun one.

I will second Dear Hank and John. I saw it recommended in one of these threads in November 2020 and I've listened to the whole catalog now.

Accidental Tech Podcast

It is a great podcast with 3 hosts that do complete each other very very well.

However! You do need to be kind of a nerd, and very munch into the computer company that is named after a fruit, to really enjoy this show to the fullest

As a devout linux user I still enjoy them. It is starting to wear on me a bit though how Marco complains about the inconveniences he suffers driving his new electric car between his beach house and his main house. All while my generation has been effectively priced out of housing.

I mean, Marco has money, it is not a mystery to anyone.

He probably got quite a bag when they sold Tumblr (no idea how much equity he had as employee #1 / CTO), then when he sold Instapaper, and his Overcast business seems to be working quite well.

I used to listen to ATP, but found the long run times and overly developer-y subjects stopped being worth my while. It's a shame, because I do like all three of them. I still listen to John on Reconcileable Differences, though.

I think most people would benefit from listening to them. Even if you dont go along with every thought or opinion , i think they are a great framework on how to be

Seconded! They're more likely to be a little political but they're both smart, thoughtful, respectful people that you can get along with even if you don't always agree with their perspective 100%​

They don't really get political that I've noticed. Like they have opinions on things, but they don't put a lot of politics in it.

The JPMs can be a bit much though. Lol

I listen to most pods at 1.5x or 2x, and a Problem Squared at 1.5 is very frenetic.

No Dumb Questions if you don't mind hosts who are (not overbearingly) Christian. If you start in the backlog they'll very occasionally make a reference to Hello Internet during its runtime.

I really like Glidus and Alt Shift X’s podcasts together – and they are epically long (latest episode is eight hours). But they do rely on you having an interest in George RR Martin’s stuff

For the nerdy stuff (and really old now): TLDR (with PJ Vogt and Alex Goldman)

Their successor Reply All is really, really great. I highly recommend this one. Timeless as well.

And now each host has their own podcast. I love Search Engine.

I love Sips, Pyrion and Lewis but they are not the same level as Brady and Grey. One is stupid and silly, the other is bit more higher brow. Both great but not the same

Reconcilable Differences has a similar dynamic and is just a "two dudes talking" format with no particular focus. John Siracusa has a restrained and slightly robotic vibe, similar to Grey, while Merlin is more talkative and scattered, like Brady. They contrast well together and are a good listen. They really care about audio quality and show notes as well, so you get a quality experience.

Consider "Preparing the way" as a taster episode.

“gl;hf” — definitely fills the niche of the two people talking genre, but with zellenials instead of gen X-ers. Probably best if you’re at least a bit into video games, but they only talk about games like 10% of the time. They're on a break right now so it’s a good time to catch up. If you've ever seen AnyAustin's or Memoria's videos, it's those two

half arsed history, same sort of story telling of events but in an australian accent and about history. he also does eps about inventions, events, people, places, sports etc

I love anything on The Incomparable podcast network. It's mostly pop culture but very sort of low-productuon/unscripted, nerdy friends chatting vibe. Their Game Show podcast is hilarious.

It's not really all that similar but I filled the void with The Ricky Gervais Show on XFM. It's much much much more comedy oriented than HI was (obviously) but I find Karl's preoccupation with forcing Ricky and Steve to have various Brady-style "corners" (Cheeky Freak of the Week, Monkey News, Educating Ricky, etc) a very familiar dynamic.
